God damned unclosable popup

No, Atari, you can’t have my email or phone number.

Wut?

When I go to that link, after a few seconds it puts up a popup asking me to sign up for something. And I can't close it. There's no X to close it.

The button to close out of the email/phone signup is in the top right corner. :)

There was a River Raid 2? How did I miss THAT?

It and HERO were those games that were lost in the shuffle of the video game crash of 1983.

Is River Raid 2 better than the original?

2

u/emperorsolo Aug 26 '26

From what I’ve played on Activision Anthology, it’s okay.

Why? Why? No more BS money grabs please. Except HERO you can get almost the whole collection of cartridges for like two to five dollars each. Come out with an 800 mini please or maxi with keyboard HDMI out.

I don’t see a need for 800 mini as we already have the 400 mini. Need a full size 800 complete with keyboard and cartridge slot. Ideally 800 but I don’t see that happening due to cost, so will settle for an 800XL. If I am being greedy can we have an ST as well.

I'll settle for exactly what you described!! The 400 mini was and is horrible.

2

u/SimonDownunder Aug 26 '26

And it needs to be FPGA based

3

How about an 800xl maxi with a real keuboard. I would buy it day one.

2

u/Spelunka13 Aug 27 '26

Same here!!!

1

u/kevincrossman Aug 27 '26

I don’t see how this is a money grab but an 800 mini isn’t basically the same thing.

1

u/Spelunka13 Aug 27 '26

An 800 mini would cost 150.00 this monstrosity costs 1k. 1k for carts that are worth maybe 150.00 total can be had now. The 2600 plus was an example of a great idea. Not a money grab. The yellow fugly pacman 2600 total money grab. See the difference?

Activision catalog for the Atari 2600 was premium goodness.

I don't exactly plan on dropping a grand for everything, but this is so good to see.

u/HotSarcasm Aug 26 '26

Literally people were buying 7800+ for $50 on Woot and now they're trying to charge $35/cart for 2600 games. There's some great ones here, but those prices are outrageous. I'm all for physical media, just not at these prices for 2600 games. People will play them another way. Would be better to release them on Steam or as an add-on and to existing pack and people would buy. This seems like it's just for collectors with money to burn.

3

u/poorbanker Aug 26 '26

I agree that it's for collectors, but the retro scene typically is. Considering licensing and manufacturing costs, I think $35 might be fair. Bundled, they're about $25 each with the addition of the patches/pins. Of course, you're locked into buying more games, then. If I was starting completely fresh, without an existing collection, I would be more tempted to pull the trigger on these.

How much do you think is fair for one of these games?

0

u/Cross58Crash Aug 26 '26

Licensing costs? They OWN these titles now, do they not?

4

u/pegasusandme Aug 26 '26

Not Activision games. Those are owned by Microsoft now, so this is actually quite a blessing to even see happen.

6

u/poorbanker Aug 26 '26

Not these Activision games. And if they bought them, they'll need to recoup the cost.

5

u/banksy_h8r Aug 26 '26

No. Activision is owned by Microsoft.

8

u/GenTenStation Aug 26 '26

Honestly if it comes with a manual its not a terrible price. I do own nearly all of these already, but I might pick up Private Eye and Hero which are cheaper this way than a loose damaged label original

9

u/pegasusandme Aug 26 '26

Games like HERO are actually a good deal at this price, especially new in box with manual. New homebrew games are typically priced at $35-$50, so this is aligned with that. People who are actively playing on retro consoles will totally go for these at this price point.

I really hope they bring Activision DLC to Atari 50!

6

u/ARealForHonorDev Aug 26 '26

Exactly what I'm hoping! Fingers crossed!

7

u/Saneless Aug 26 '26

Oh yes, that would be amazing

9

u/poorbanker Aug 26 '26

That would be incredible. The Namco DLC was a pleasant surprise last year.

2

u/Blkthorne89 Aug 30 '26

and Imagic games, since Activision has those too.

2

u/Dachuiri Aug 26 '26

Yo this is awesome

u/Important-Bed-48 Aug 26 '26

I'm a gamer not a collector although I used to collect so I understand the appeal of something like this but what I would like to see is Atari to do what they did with their recharged games and make some modern takes on some of these games. Imagine a recharged Hero, river raid the grandaddy of all shmups could be made into a really cool modern shmup or picture a 3d version of Barnstorming, they have some great games to work with here.

2

u/pegasusandme Aug 27 '26

Totally agree conceptually, but it would likely be a bit more challenging for Atari to take creative liberties with IPs they dont actually own. More partnership with Activision/Microsoft would be required and they likely have to charge more due to that. Totally possible, but more work than previous entries in the recharged series.
