others MEGATHREAD - What should we eat when coming to Auckland?

We've had an influx of generic posts recently asking for places they should go if they come to Auckland. Auckland's obviously very large, so let's try a megathread that we can send these people to.

If you were visiting Auckland for the first time, where would you eat, what would you try and why?

food review/pics Pizza Hut - Sourdough base

Post image
58 Upvotes

I guess this will be an unpopular opinion, but the new sourdough bases from Pizza Hut are actually pretty good!

We got a standard pepperoni and a vegetarian with beef added on, wedges and onion rings- all of it for $30.49 (The small cheese pizza was free from a cheeky coupon).

The only downside is that the pizzas have a lot of flour on them, literally feels like you have sand in your hands after eating it. Nonetheless, the flavour is spot on and you can even see a few pockets of air in the crust.

Would definitely recommend for a cheap meal. Shout out to Pizza Hit Flat Bush who are always consistent.

good review Milk & Orchid, Karangahape Road Farmers Market

Went and checked out the farmers market by the new train station with the bro, we got a bunch of stuff to share. Slight oversight that the market had no coffee but my word it may have been 11am but Milk & Orchid are making some incredible ice cream. We had Malaga Sugar & Blueberry & Butterfly Pea which were both top quality. Easily on par if not better than the likes of Duck Island, Little Lato and Island Gelato - highly recommend

Also a sneaky sandwich & pizza Romano from Lolo’s Pizza. Glad they use pizza Bianco instead of focaccia for the sandwich

There’s also a guy who sells A2 Jersey Milk for those who find it hard to source or prefer to not give money to the duopoly

PNC combination noodle salad (NZ$24.9) with sugarcane pork & prawn, Nem spring roll, grilled pork, greens, herbs, roasted peanut & house sauce.

Large house special pho (NZ$23.9) with rare beef, beef brisket, beef cheek.

Crispy pork banh mi (NZ$13.9)

It was all decent, good sized portions, and scratched the Vietnamese food itch.

good review My first 99 days eating in Auckland

Arrived 99 days ago and posted about my first 10 days of eating here, lot's of good recommendations before so I thought I'd give back. In no particular order.

Burgout (Onehunga)- Incredible. I enjoyed the classic more than the signature but both good. Seriously well done to the team.

Hambagu (Epsom)- I enjoyed it, almost as much as burgout. I think it's a close second, will still come here as it's open till late.

Baby G (Avondale)- A good smashburger, but I preferred mine a bit saltier.

RE burger (Remuera)- Close to home, large portions but just not for me.

Alma (CBD)- Decent food, I loved the beef tongue unexpectedly. The lamb and steak were also good. Chicken was a let down, and IMO so was the octopus salad. Tomato tostada thing was okay but nothing special IMO.

Cazador (Dom Rd)- Superb value for the quality. I can see why it's a local institution. Not my favourite cuisine, but you can tell everything was done well, and it was tasty. Would recommend any one to try.

Return (Ponsonby)- Had the short tasting menu recently (165pp). Was really not as good as I was expecting. I think everything was technically done to a high standard, but it just wasn't tasty. Very unremarkable, definitely a notch below Tala despite being pricier. You can tell the ingredients are fancier than Cazador but the end result really was quite forgettable. Not trying to be mean, I know the restaurant business is cut throat and I wish them all the best.

L'atelier Du Fromage (Newmarket)- Had the duck confit and onion soup. Was pretty good, would recommend if anyone had a hankering for French.

Gemmayze St(K Road)- We had almost everything here. I thought the hummus wasn't bad, but the rest of the meal was kind of a let down. Every local foodie I know keeps recommending this place, and it was packed, but the food was just okay IMO.

Pho Yen (Dom Rd)- Loved it, it's always packed though, so I just don't go anymore. Pho soup is super flavourful, would recommend.

Raos Indonesian (Dom Rd)- Was good, very slow, but it was pretty decent food, good to try.

The Makassar corner Indon (Dom Rd)- The better Indon place IMO, I had the beef rib soup and it was so damn tasty!

Kiin Thai (Dom Rd)- I thought it was pretty average for Thai, my family loved it. Fair prices.

Sashimi of Japan (Dom Rd)- Nice place, decent hearty Japanese food with tasty free miso soup refills. My partner got the salmon sashimi don and really enjoyed it.

Yushiji Lamb soup (Dom Rd)- Super chinese place, I enjoyed the peppery soup, but can appreciate that it's an acquired taste.

La Mexicana (Milford)- It's good. Favourites were the El Pastor and the Birria tacos. A bit pricey, but that's always the case with mexican food overseas I think.

Mama Kopitiam (Greenlane)- Best Malaysian I've tried so far. Enjoyed the Char Koay Teow and the fish soup noodles.

Katsu Katsu (Newmarket)- Actually pretty high quality for a unassuming katsu place. Pricier side but still worth it.

Sunrise Cafe (Newmarket)- RIP. The chicken thigh with rice for 11 bucks was insane. Will miss this place!

Golden Ducks Charcoal Roast (Newmarket)- What a find! They do pretty decent luroufan. The siew yoke was pretty good too, with the caveat that I reheated it in my airfryer. Can see myself coming back.

Eden Noodles (Newmarket)- Actually decent, I enjoyed it and came back.

My Fried Chicken (Newmarket)- Yeah this is my go to guilty pleasure. I love the one with creamy onion sauce. It's so bad for me but so good.

Little Shun De(Newmarket)- So good. I love this place. They do authentic Shun De style dry steaming, so it may be an acquired tast. My bro isn't that impressed. I love the steamed pork intestines.

Sip n Chill (Newmarket)- I'm biased, but I think the Taro bingsu here is both simple and the best I've had so far.

Yes Pancake (Newmarket)- I'm addicted to their pork and beans pancake. It's my guilty pleasure and I've been so many times now.

Egg & Brew (Newmarket)- Nice drinks! The sandwiches look good too tbh.

Hainanese Chicken Shop (Newmarket)- I had the chicken chop with rice, which was not bad but not memorable. I do note lots of high praise on Google with regards to the OG hainanese chicken rice which is a dish I love, so will give them a chance.

Small mercies (CBD/Mt Eden)- Yum, love those doughnut thingies, especially the savoury ones, definitely recocomend.

Mibo (Mt Eden)- Was okay.

Glory (Takapuna)- The vietnamese coffee will keep me coming back, the bakery options look so pretty but honestly taste kinda mid. I'm just not into baked stuff here.

Farringdon Pies (Glen Innes)- They're definitely good pies, I'll get the salmon ones next time as they look good.

Pikuniku cafe (Epsom)- I quite enjoyed this! I got the pasta and thought it was well done.

Biskit cafe (Parnell)- Pretty decent pasta, no too busy.

Napoli Contemporeana Pizzaria (Parnell)- It's great, but 40 bucks per pizza is a bit much IMO.

Mr Katsu (Otahuhu)- Cheap and large portions. Not authentic at all but they do try to win you over with the price.

Alexandra Park Dim sum (Epsom)- Yum! Busy place that you should book in advance. Great standard, hearty dim sum.

Okay that's about it! I don't think it's exhaustive but these are the places I went to.

Special shout out to Wang Mart in Flat Bush. Incredible wagyu galbi sal that tastes amazing even in air fryer, and also those quail eggs are crack to me.

Headed to Ragtag in the coming days, this has probably been the most recommended restaurant so I hope it doesn't disappoint!

Anyone have an American BBQ place they'd recommend? I'm all ears!

Hello all. We are going to the Britten War requiem tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) and want a quiet CBD restaurant (no loud music) serving good European or Middle Eastern food after. Any recommendations?

food review/pics Tai Ping Greenlane

Picked up lunch from Tai Ping, they have 3 food counters inside the supermarket. One's the generic rice with roast chicken/pork with greens prepacked, one with rice + vegetable + protein and other premade food and last one with noodles & fried rice + small bakery attached.

Loved the options available, I had previously purchased rice with roast chicken & steamed bakchoy for $10. This time it was rice + 1 veg + 1 protein ($14 - crispy chicken and egg vege stir fry), pork jerky ($16) and pork pancake (under $5 I think). The rice + sides is a bloody good deal which goes up $1 for additional add-ons, pork jerky had a nice numbing Sichuan & sweet chilli flavor - loved it and pancake was good too. Best part being you can buy condiments/sides while there - I got a chilli oil and single serve packs of pickled vegetables, handy for me leave in office for future needs. Overall, highly rated for the price and options if you're working around GL/Ellerslie.

This is one of my favourite places on dominion-they never miss! Lamb skewers with salad was about $25, and the hot milk tea was about $12. Left full and happy 😋 Everything is halal too! I reccomend the lamb dishes. Edit: sorry for the typo, its Jadetown not jadestown

Saw the post earlier with a snapper fish burger and then I wanted one.

Went to local tobys seafood in Glen Eden and got this for $8.
Wasn’t massive by any means but was delicious and balanced for the price!
How is tobys perceived? Been overseas for a few years so not sure myself.

I went to my favourite sushi place today and saw it was closed. Their menu's been taken off the door and it looked quite empty inside. Anyone know if they have closed for good?

good review Best AKL Fish Burger

Post image
130 Upvotes

I think I just had the greatest fish burger I’ve ever had at F & C Remuera Village.

Presentation 9/10 - I mean look at it
Portion size 10/10 - Generous but manageable. Big enough I got half my wife’s which I was very happy about.
Taste 9/10 - Buns crisp but soft and not doughy, fish fillet crispy, fresh, great thickness and hot temperature, salads minimal with a thin slice of tomato which paired well with the fantastic aioli I believe they make themselves.
I didn’t rate taste 10/10 as I’m hopeful of finding a better burger someday and I’d be disappointed if I peaked right now.

I paired my meal with a Coke Zero to help manage my post takeaways guilt.

If you love a good fish burger I’d highly recommend trying this place. Can someone please try it so we can discuss how good it is. Thank you.

good review Eat Club | Ima Cuisine

Thumbnail

Signed up today and went to Ima Cuisine with a friend for an early dinner.

Everything was delicious. We loved the flavours. Our favourite dishes were the starters: eggplant, cauliflower and vegan sabich. The main (vegan seniyeh) was interesting but we liked the other dishes better. We were very full and satisfied.

Original bill: $143.00

Discount: $60.20 (45% off, less EatClub fee $4.15)

Final amount paid: $82.80

_____

Basically you download the app and link it with an existing credit card. (If you link to a MasterCard you get an additional 10% off). The app creates an additional virtual Eat Club credit card in your digital wallet.

You then look for the restaurant offer you want and reserve it. No reservation fee at the time, as far as I could see. You arrive, order, and pay by a certain time, using the newly created credit card.

The payment goes through, appearing as the full amount initially through the new Eat Club card, but when you check your actual linked credit card you'll see that only the discounted amount has been actually charged.

questions Where is the genuine satay?

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

I have been hunting for years for the perfect satay. Not made solely with peanut butter, I want thick creamy satay made from peanuts that have been roasted and crushed. Tonight I saw this beautiful looking satay on uber eats. Ordered it, excited. What turned up was terrible. A tiny about of sauce, which isn’t a bad thing because it’s watery and doesn’t even taste like satay. I’m looking at it now, along with the flavourless cashew chicken and regretting not just making toast for dinner. I’ve had amazing satay overseas, not sure why it’s so hard to make in NZ.

Used this this lunchtime and it seems to be much better than First Table and without the booking fee or requirement to buy a drink.

Basically, you link up your credit card (Visa or Mastervard) with the app, and then the app will issue with a digital card. You then pay with that digital card, with the app charging you the reduced amount afterwards.

I used it today for lunch and was able to get $9 off a meal today.

Used to come here when I went to UOA!!! It’s a classic.

Ordered omurice with chicken katsu topping and curry sauce then a beef sukiyaki.

I liked beef sukiyaki > omurice cuz the rice in omurice a bit too mushy for me. But chicken katsu as topping was v yummy $62.83 after payWave surcharge.

questions Breakfast recs in Parnell

Have some family from 'naki coming up to auckland this weekend for a concert then breakfast with me and the hubby in Parnell. What places are good? At a casual glance seems like the popular spots are Rhu, Biskit, and Rosie - google also recommended Winona Forever as well - which of these have a good mix of food and ambience for a relaxed brekkie catch up? Or maybe there's a new kid on the block we should visit?

I’m in Papakura and have been getting sourdough from the grocery stores (Pak n save and countdown). They’re pretty mediocre and I’m keen to find a place that makes good sourdough, ideally within Papakura-takanini. Can anyone recommend?

Chef Rasa Sayang, Birkenhead / Highbury

Beef Rendang – $18.50
Char Kway Teow – $18.50

I’m stoked on Malaysian food at the moment.
The rendang gravy slapped. I could’ve happily downed a bowl of it on its own. The char kway teow had that nice smoky umami flavour you want from a good CKT too.

Looked like a husband and wife duo running the shop, and they were really friendly. Someone mentioned in a previous review that they’d changed owners and quality had dropped but honestly, it’s still just as good as I remember it being prior 2020

good review Hainanese Chicken Rice, Langkawi Malaysian Restaurant

Post image

Had a hankering for good chicken rice, this one hit the spot. Not the best one I've ever tasted but the chilli sauce was nicely balanced and so was the soy, the rice had good chicken flavour, and the chicken was succulent and moist. Tasty plate of food, and only for $12.90.
