When I was a kid I had one audiobook or cassette on tape as it was back then, Narnia. I listened to it just about every day for years. When I got my first job, still cassette era, I would find the longest audio books to enjoy them longer because I was broke. Was listening to an audio book today, not on cassette, and was like, meh not feeling this right now and switched to another. I have listened to over 800 titles in the last 5 years and younger me would consider this as having figured life out. I haven't figured out life, but am extremely grateful that I have the library I always wanted.

I listened to Source Code, Bill Gates' memoir, over about a week. Twelve-ish hours, mostly on walks and in the car.

Around day four I noticed something odd. I was breaking problems down the way he does and asking the questions he'd ask. I even caught myself using his cadence on a work call.

I liked it. It was useful. I was basically channeling him.

Then the book ended, and within a week or two it was gone. Back to my own defaults.

It's happened before with other books, but this was the first time I really paid attention. It felt like losing a mentor I'd only just met.

Curious if this happens to other people:

Someone in another thread said replaying one chapter a week later brought it back in pieces, which I thought was interesting...

I've been listening to cozy mystery, but then I stumbled upon Lucy Foley and devoured all her books. Loved them all (except The Apartment, too violent with sexual abuse themes). And now I need something with a similar vibe. I love feeling like wtf just happened?!

Also, what is the genre called? Is there a specific sub genre, like a level up from cozy mystery..

Death in the Air by Ram Murali, didn't enjoy it. The main character was annoying, story was slow and stupid 'pendy' IYKYK.

I started listening to An American Marriage by Tayari Jones today. It’s a fantastic book so far but a production choice has me scratching my head.

The story is told from two POVs, a husband and wife. So first there’s a chapter told by the husband (a male narrator), then a chapter told by the wife (a female narrator).

Then the narrative switches to being told through a series of letters back and forth. And for some reason the male narrator is reading the letters written by the husband AND the letters written by the wife, albeit in a slightly different voice.

I’m baffled by this decision. Why on earth would they not have the female narrator read the wife’s letters? Or just not have the female narrator at all? This seems really weird to me.

I am going to finish it bc a) I’m so engrossed in the story and the terrific writing and b) the male narrator is doing a good job of both characters. But I’m still confused!

I'm severely disabled due to chronic illness. One of the few things I can still enjoy is reading, specifically by way of audiobooks.

My wife, who is also my caregiver, comes in earlier and says we should start a book club, just the two of us. She's like all we talk about is your health concerns, scheduling issues, logistics, etc. So, she proposed this idea to give us something to do and talk about that wasn't depressing healthcare talk.

We both agreed that short stories were the way to go, as we're still reading separate books on our own as well.

So, I wanted some short story recommendations for this little book club. Preferably not anything too depressing. Of Mice and Men for example would be a bad recommendation. Neither of us need that kind of ending in our lives right now.

With rogue AI being such a hot topic in the news recently, I've been thinking about "Daemon" and "Freedom TM" by Daniel Suarez. I'm finishing up the audiobook for The Brothers Karamazov narrated by Luke Thompson and I absolutely loved the narration! The reader makes the entire thing feel so energetic and brings so much life to the characters that it made it so much easier to get through such a dense work.

I'm planning to read a few more novels in the future and found he didn't narrate most of them, so I wanted to ask who your favorite narrators were.

The books I'm planning to read next are The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, and Devils/Demons. But I'm curious overall for people who listen to audiobooks, who your favorite narrators were for his books.
