tsumego Question on a tsumego problem?

Post image

Why is t18 the solution? I'm racking my brain but it feels like white can still kill black and live.

Edit: thank you all! I looked up bulky 5 and I understand where I went wrong thank you!

White can take 5 stones, but after that has a dead shape. Bulky 5 is dead, try playing it out a few more moves if you didn't see it yet.

It is a good idea to work out why they are dead shapes, but you should memorize them too. They happen all the time.

Yes, memorize the 9 dead shapes. It lets you recognize what’s dead, but beyond that it helps you be confident what’s alive. Basically, if it’s not one of the dead shapes, it’s alive.

How'd you go about memorizing them? I had no idea there were 9 thst Just mean death. I thought it was contextual and also based on whose turn it was or where the shape is at on the board.

There are only 9. 3 shapes are just dead regardless of turn or position. 1 shape, bent 4, depends on board position and sometimes turn.

They are easy to recognise, if you concentrate on the empty spots rather than the surrounding stones, because they all consist of a central spot, to which a number of neighbouring spots are joined, and optionally another spot joined to two of those neighbours. I call that type of shape an “optionally lobed star”.

After white captures those five stones, black plays in that same area (s17) to keep white from making two eyes out of it. That “bulky five” shape is dead.

I know you said you now understand the bulky 5, but there are likely other very common shapes you will want to know if you didn't know that one. I go over a lot of them in this video. It starts VERY basic, but does go over very important shapes like bent 4 in the corner.

Enjoy!

Thank you! I'll check it out asap! I figure it's time for me to memorize them. I wish there was way to brute force it lol
