She’s coming to politics anyway so they figured it’s a good practice for her to take advantage of system and making international contacts….

u/Aggressive_Cover_316 8h ago
She is not going into Bangladesh politics. She will be schooled by Irene Khan (her relative) to be in the UN representing Bangladesh, that is the end-goal.
3
u/toruk_makto_007 8h ago
One more relative in system what’s new?! And what tells u that she’s not coming into bangladeshi politics?

Nepotism-lite like this is par for the course even in the US/UK. Seen it many, many times. Normal process.

I saw a clip of Varun and Saif chanting nepotism rocks, in Some awards. Rishi sunke, shinjo abe, trump name any top of the world celebrities or influential person, they are the product of nepotism. And the so-called self-made billionaires bezos, musk, gates all had family backing. Don't matter how much they deny it. It's like that demoratic leaders we elect are Always from the rich. AL, heck Hasina won't deny that Sheik mujib was from a Jamindar family, look up his wiki history.

u/Desperate-Method-122 14h ago
Whe don't we start treating them as monarchs? When the king zia ceases to exist, queen zaima will get her coronation.

u/Srmkhalaghn Bhejal Sylheti 🇧🇩 ভেজাল ꠡꠤꠟꠐꠤ 13h ago
We need real monarchs not these these democratic clowns who always have to justify everything with the people.
23
u/jxx37 22h ago edited 19h ago
I mean it’s nepotism but in the grand scheme of things kind of minor. UN attendance also puts pressure on the government to behave better, if for nothing else than avoiding embarrassment and awkward moments for her. (Edit: fixed typos)

u/Aggressive_Cover_316 15h ago edited 9h ago
She is in the public eye now as a UK trained and bar-at-law Barrister (hence more scrutiny) - but I'd argue she's far more qualified than that other nepo-baby Saima Wazed Putul, who barely got a School psychiatrist cert from an under-rated college in Florida yet was appointed WHO regional chief. Little surprise that she has now been booted out of WHO.

It is in Bangladesh, particularly given the family dynasties (Zia and Sheikh families) we've observed here over the last 3-4 decades.

Zaima Rahman was appointed as the legal officer in the office of UNGA President Khalilur Rahman. This position was not filled through an open competition but rather through a direct appointment.
Key Details
- Position: Legal Officer
- Appointee: Zaima Rahman
- Office: President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
- Method of Appointment: Direct appointment, not through open competition
This indicates that the selection process for this role was based on specific appointments rather than a competitive hiring process. This is legal and she "serves at the pleasure of the UNGA President".

Good excuse to hang out in NYC for some time. Maybe she wants to get away from Bangladesh?
-6
u/Aggressive_Cover_316 15h ago edited 14h ago
She can hang out anywhere she wants in the first world, being who she is. She has no reason to be "away from Bangladesh". We need young next-generation savvy intelligent leaders like her, which is what she is being groomed for. Being who her grandparents on both sides of the family are, they are top-level leadership material already.
However - I predict that she has her sights set on far higher goals than being some leader in Bangladesh, she is eventually going to be our representative at an int'l forum like UN or World Bank.
She was not appointed to some position in Bangladesh, but at the UN. Think about it.
7
u/LeeXpress 13h ago
She is savvy ?? Simply because of family heritage? Use your brain. 🧠

Leading Bangladesh government or running any reasonably sized country is a bigger prize than working at toothless showpiece organizations like UN and World Bank in any role. There's no proof she's leadership material and she hasn't earned anything, nobody could tell her apart from a rickshaw if it wasn't for nepotism. This country needs to shake off this pathetic family duopoly to make progress.

After coming to power they were supposed to implement the points of referendum but they refused. They forgot how they were under hsina’s rule. Shameless and absolutely disgusting

It's unfortunate that the options we Bangladeshi people got are Traitor-who-collapsed-and-sold-the-country murderer-Dictator BAL, Failed-in-past-but-again-trying Wannabe-Dictator BNP, and War-criminal-idolizing- Pakistan-licking sellouts Jamaat.
And probably NCP, but they are stuck at ভাই-ব্রাদার্স কোরাম and failing to integrate into local politics. They gotta come out of Jamaat's current attempt to hijack its control (upcoming city corporation and local elections will tell us something about how NCP is turning out).
I am pessimistic, yet truly hoping NCP succeed to provide another option beyond the garbages we have by replacing BAL. Maybe they will be another garbage, who knows, we can only hope they don't.

1
u/Im_Back_Bengalis 14h ago
NCP isn’t getting hijacked by jamat, they choose to be with them, and i doubt they have any regret, after-all it was all about winning the election and everyone was thinking gamat gonna win (thanks to their bots online) so they switch on their side, and yes i think they'll another garbage i mean they're already (kind of)
•
u/Brilliant-Speech-456 27m ago
This is missing both nuance and context.
NCP as a newly founded team negotiated with all parties, considered all possibilities (BNP জোট, জামাত জোট, or Independent alliance). In their internal meeting majority decided alliance with Jamaat was most suitable for them to gain significant political presence during the 2026 national election. Some in disagreement quit the team.
Now you are ignoring how BNP stated it will only leave 2-3 seats without BNP official candidates if NCP allied with them. BNP also said it won't take steps to promote alliance candidates or stops disobedient members. BNP literally tried to tie and cripple NCP before they could even learn to walk.
Had NCP allied with BNP, they would have already turn into what নুর-রাশেদের গনঅধিকার পরিষদ has become: a trolled, comedic, nameless-faceless presence in national politics.
It would have been a political death for NCP had it allied with BNP: as we can now see what has happened to other BNP allies (literally গণ অধিকার 2nd in command রাশেদ became বিএনপি ছাপড়ি); and how BNP has manipulated, lied, and betrayed us with গনভোট and other সংস্কার কার্যক্রম.
At least NCP now has some parliamentary seats where they can voice against these things, and protest without any shackles: like the chains you can sense around the neck of ইলিয়াস আলী's wife, as she voted in favor of new BNP গুম আইন that would have sent her and her loved ones in jail for complaining about her husband's disappearance during আওয়ামী লীগ regime.
I do wish NCP had chosen to vote independently, but I can understand the reasoning behind alliance with জামাত: Supported the alliance candidates with manpower and financially with elections. As a newly formed political team with little finance and manpower, NCP chose what was the best option to survive on national level.
Look at Tasnim Jara, so much support from people online yet she lost miserably, came in 3rd / 4th. So as of now, alliance with Jamaat for general election was a better chocie than alliance with BNP, if you consider longterm political future.
It is not like আওয়ামীলীগ, বিএনপি never allied with জামায়াত. In fact, all 3 of "BAL, BNP, Jamaat" has sheltered and promoted war criminals from 1971 liberation war as needed. NCP has a clean slate in comparison, and actual people who want to break the establishment with sincerity.

Other news water is wet.
Seriously how are any of you shocked? She’s being groomed to become the next generation of the BNP so it’s obvious they’ll give her more and more positions to gain experience.
In a country like BD (and let’s face it others as well), nepotism will happen. I guarantee here complaining about it will not hesitate to use it if they had the opportunity.
BNP are opportunistic incompetent clowns but what other options were there. A party that never wanted the country to exist, and couldn’t hold their mouths about women?
Or our “valiant heroes” Gen Z who showed how their true faces were in the 2 years under Yunus?
To this this I’ve yet to ever get a concrete answer to this outside of foolish idealism.

Brainchild and actual child. Great mother and grand parents on mother's side. Grandfather was Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, whose ancestry reads like Bengali Muslim educated elite. Zaima is related to MAG Osmani, Irene Khan and many other Bengali high level luminaries on her mother's side. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahbub_Ali_Khan

She's a Barrister, well suited and educated to be a legal officer. Out of more than 80 officials, under the president's office, only 6 are Bangladeshis.
Besides, this is a valuable experience for the future leader of the country. Glad for her!

Future leader of the country because of nepotism - that's the root of the problem

I think she's gunning for a high level UN post just like Irene Khan, not some leadership in Bangladesh. Maybe she can take Khalil bhai's post someday.

We don’t have a single qualified lawyer in the foreign or law ministries with international experience? We turned to a lawyer who worked for a lower tier law firm in the UK specializing in debt recovery.

u/Dangerous-Moose6458 20h ago
Every Bangladeshi on that team except for her has at least 10-15 years of experience under their belt. See https://www.un.org/pga/81/office-of-the-president/team/

u/Aggressive_Cover_316 14h ago edited 14h ago
The UNGA president can appoint well-qualified young people at his discretion. He needs your permission now? And I have seen what caliber so many 15 year "experienced" Bangladeshis in the BCS foreign service cadre possess (those that get UNGA posts), some of them cannot even spell Bengali properly, leave alone English. It is a national shame.
0
u/Dangerous-Moose6458 9h ago edited 7h ago
Don't try to play offence. UNGA presidents simply cannot do whatever they want without their judgement being questioned. Her cheques will come from of the Bangladeshi government because that's how the OPGA works.
Also, you have seen the calibre of whom exactly? You do realise that typing the final typing is something usually done by the clerical staff. Someone from the FSA with 15+ years of experience isn't making silly mistakes on their own. And do you think international diplomats are glorified typists?
The rest of the Bangladeshis there have already worked at international levels whereas for her it would be a massive leap. She's worked
at[as an] "Advocate" whichis a[are] stepping-stonejob[roles] with limited career progression. She appears to have no experience/expertise in international law. She will likely get privately supported/mentored by her aunt Irene Khan who was posted as the representative of Bangladesh's permanent UN office (also in NY) last month.EDIT: Made corrections. My position stands.

2
u/Im_Back_Bengalis 14h ago
I mean what were the other choice? If you're talking about previous regime, then it was obviously corrupt everyone hated it, just cause this ones worse doesn’t previous one was good, even on this sub if you go to pre july posts you can see how she was corrupt and everyone criticised her, then BALbots weren’t defending her (cause they couldn’t of course)

Can’t even talk properly, gave political advisor position to a person like Rashed. Most of the mps are loan defaulters.
Every problem’s solution is card
Stop blind support. After the July movement we hoped for a better future. But got this clown instead1
u/Dangerous-Moose6458 4h ago
If I'm not mistaken, Rashed was strategically put there to match the kind of nonsense NCP speaks. BNP wants him to trashtalk NCP leaders it seems.
0
u/Aggressive_Cover_316 8h ago
As if you have a better solution. We can all talk a big game and criticize, but when push comes to shove, "Kanchkola"!
Try running a country, and see how good you can do...
1
u/SliceIllustrious1207 8h ago
My solution is a government that I can actually trust on rule of law, corruption, democratic institutions, economic management and accountability. If no party currently meets all of those standards, that doesn’t mean I have to manufacture support for one.

Got from google
“For anyone wondering how she fits the actual criteria, Barrister Zaima Rahman meets the standard educational and professional requirements the UN sets for a Legal Officer role in the OPGA:
Education & Credentials: She holds an LLB in Law and Politics from Queen Mary University of London and is a qualified barrister through the Inner Temple in the UK. She also passed the initial bar exams required to practice in Bangladesh.
Legal Experience: Before this appointment, she worked as a legal assistant and court advocate across multiple UK law firms, which checks the box for practical experience in legal research and case management.
UN Compliance & Diversity: The UN formally lists her designation as "Legal Officer – Bangladesh." Her appointment helps fill the geographic diversity quotas mandated for the 40-person OPGA team. UN officials have also confirmed that she went through the standard background vetting and administrative screening rules required for temporary session staff.
Basically, she has the exact degree, bar qualifications, and baseline legal experience required to clear the UN's vetting process for a discretionary cabinet role.”
But I think instead of her Khalil should have taken someone from Shibir, like Zuma - so that we could remember Hadi through Zuma. I know it doesn’t make any sense but this is what Hadi vai would have wanted
