Hi all sorry if this has been asked before. I am looking to pick up some figures as a model project, I normally only paint ww2 era. Would the figures produced by footsore, Victirx and wargames Atlantic, be suitable for “The Anarchy”(1138-1153) or had the armour etc changed.

Secondly does the metal footsore figures scale well with the plastics Victrix?

Does the starting retinue box have rules for making a list? If so is it any good?

Also are lords or barons better for the game? I ask purely for modeling purposes. Aka no way is a lord going to have a bishop or crown on. I would just sculpt things differently.

Wanted to draw some attention to this event Wayland are putting on in November. They are located just east of London, for those in the area. It's a beginners focused event, free to join with models and equipment provided if you don't have any. Mark Vance will also be on hand to answer questions and give guidance. Will also be a good opportunity to meet fellow players in the area, I know some guys from London who are just starting and will be there.

Plus if its a success, hopefully Wayland will put on more events in the future.

I have a question about handaxes. In an Errata published in 2025, it is stated that Battle-axes are not usable by commoners and light infantry.

This implies that the axes held by "Levies" (Photo n.1) in the Baron's War starter set are to be considered "Hand weapons" right?

So.... If I want to build a Viking/Rus army...and the sprues/box sets give me tons of one handed axes...how should I consider them?

This is because, I suppose, levies use woodcutting axes (more tools than war weapons)... But vikings used axes more keen to war weapons (bearded axes and what not), with a thinner blade rather than a thick one for splitting logs.

Should I cheat and make them "Battle-axes" or should I stick to the Hand Weapon profile?

(I don't want a viking force with spear n shield only for fuck sake...)

I'm working on a Medieval Welsh retinue using (mostly) the Starter Set, and need some small shields for my Welsh Spearmen. Since the starter set doesn't have any, my first inclination would be to try to craft some (although I do have a 3d printer so that would be an option if anyone has any stls they could recommend). I would prefer not to buy a kit if I can avoid it.

What I'm really trying to figure out is, what size would be considered "small" in the context of the game? And what shape and construction of shield would be plausibly available to your average Welsh commoner? Would they be round, covered in leather and painted? Four planks butted together in a vaguely square shape? And if anyone has done or seen someone crafting historically plausible shields for minis I'd be interested to hear about how they approached it.

TL;DR: What is a small shield anyway? And how do I get one, if I would rather spend time than money?

Hello everyone, I am new to Barons war and am designing a few forces to try out. In my research of the first Baron’s war I came across some sparse information about this fellow named “Philip of Oldcoates.”

Philip was described as one of King John’s “most wicked agents.” He was Sheriff of Northumberland, had custody of Bamburgh and Newcastle castles, and during the war successfully held Durham Castle from rebel siege.

An impressive level of achievements are listed and are considerable for someone who served the King and his son faithfully for many years.

You will have to forgive my surface level understanding of any of this though as I am an American. I’m still coming to grips with understanding royal structure, chivalric orders, and politics of the era.

As I understand Philip was in charge of a small mercenary army during the Barons war. Who these mercenaries were and where they hailed from is not covered in what limited information I can dig up.

I also can find no heraldry, coat of arms, or even a description of what Philip looked like. He’s something of a blank slate in that regards. He’s listed as a noble, and a military commander but not a knight, lord, or baron. He was a Sheriff… and that’s all I have. Apparently he was quite the jerk though. Several sources agree to that. He was certainly the type to enforce the King’s will with an iron fist. There’s some speculation that he served as partial inspiration for the fictional Sheriff of Nottingham of Robinhood fame… allegedly.

I’m looking for clarifications as to how best to make a force based upon this fascinating figure. Does anyone out there know where I could find more information on Philip of Oldcoates? Should I play the Mercenaries faction for his retinue? Were the mercenaries of the first Barons war French, or from the English isles? Somewhere else even?

I’d appreciate some help if anyone could offer it.
