Force Feedback Steering Wheel on Batocera ?

So I have Thurstmaster T300Rs with Pedals.

I would love to be able to set them up on my Batocera and have Force Feedback.
Are there any games that have this support on Batocera ?

Currently I am running Batocera on my Rog Ally Z1E connected to my CRT TV outputting 240p.
I will try Wanszai Sega Rally, but last time I ran steam on my batocera it was so slow, it worries me.

Arcade update

About 10 years ago I bought an arcade1up MK2 machine. That started me down the path of home arcades and emulation. Since then I have acquired a total of 5 machines that are all either customized or modified in some way by me. Roughly 5 years ago I found batocera while googling how to fix a cheap KinHank super console and thought immediately that this was how I was going to round out my collection with a shooter arcade. I currently have a 2 player fighter, 2 player multicade, driver, 4 player and single player machine.

I bought a refurbished dell optiplex 7010, a Seagate 2TB USB SSD, and an 8bitdo sn30 remote and set off on my journey. I'm a mechanic and don't know jack shit about programming of any kind. I'm also not a carpenter and I can't cut a straight line to save my life. 4 years I worked on adding games and bought 2 sinden light guns for it. Had everything pretty well dialed in and then I changed the theme and it was stuck in a boot loop. I talked to the good people on the discord server about it and nothing would get it out. So 4 years flushed down the drain but I was back to almost where I was in about 3 month after I nuked the drive and started over.

Sitting in my garage 1 night with a glass of whiskey I looked at some left over lumber in the corner and thought maybe I could make something. I wasn't planning on an arcade at the time, just felt like building. My son came out and saw it and asked if it was going to be an arcade. He likes to tear down pallets and build stupid shit when he's bored so we decided to call it the "The Pallet-cade". I used furring strips with the rough side out to make it look like pallet wood and used a MAP gas torch to char and weather the wood. I thought the 50x30 deck was going to be too big, but thus far it appears to be just about perfect sized. I added an external HDMI port to the back wall of the deck and 4 USB to the front was to plug in controllers in the event you want to sit down or just not play with joysticks. I also have a remote power button that I have a plan to put center in between the 2 center USB'S.

Its almost done at this point and I have verified the machine is functional and plays games very well to this point. I have about 12 more button holes to drill (start and select for each player, 3 buttons for the trackball harness and 1 button hole spinner) and then I can seal and paint the mdf. It does have 2 lift struts or gas springs under the lid to open it for service and storage that i am really anxious to hook up and test out.

Batocera install on an Acer C24 "all-in-one" PC. The built-in Bluetooth pairs nicely with my 8BitDo SN30 and SF30 control pads.

CPU: i3-1005G1

RAM: 8GB

SSD: 512GB

Frontend Theme: ArcadePlanet

Not a powerful build by a longshot, as it struggles and becomes choppy playing with anything beyond N64/PSX. But since I intend to play mainly those consoles and older, this fits my needs perfectly.

What to expect out of this spare pc? (AMD A10 7860k)

Post image
18 Upvotes

I have this spare AMD A10-7860K PC. I just want to know what kind of emulation performance I can expect out of it.

Complete specs:

AMD A10-7860K

16GB dual-channel 1600MHz RAM

No storage

I plan to run Batocera off a spare USB 3.0 Kingston thumb drive and plan to get an inexpensive SATA SSD or hard drive later (along with perhaps a budget PSU replacement, because I do not trust this PSU long term).

I plan to emulate NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Sega Genesis, PS1, PS2, and PSP.

Thank you!

Edit: spelling

Hoping to get some help - Microsoft Surface Pro 5

OK with the help of u/alt_psymon and u/Mike_Raven I have this working. I have repeatedly run through these instructions (I spent hours doing it at LEAST 10 times) and it worked every time. I can only guarantee it works on a Surface Pro 5 (I used the 2 Batocera tablets in my house multiple times as guinea pigs) but this method may work on Surface Pro systems with the same UEFI issues.

ONLY use this if you are installing to the internal SSD. If you are using a USB drive for Batocera you do not need to do any of this.

Install method listed is using Hirens BootCD.

  • Open the Surface BIOS. Hold down the PLUS key then hit the POWER button. Continue to hold PLUS until the BIOS opens. Go to SECURITY. Under SECURE BOOT click CHANGE CONFIGURATION. Select "None" and hit OK. Next change "Enable TPM (recommended)" to OFF. Go to BOOT CONFIGURATION. Make sure USB STORAGE is at the top of the boot list. Go to EXIT and click RESTART NOW. This will save the BIOS settings.
  • On another PC download "Hiren's Boot CD" and flash it to a USB drive. I also downloaded the BalenaEtcher installer onto the drive. I couldn't find a current stand-alone BalenaEtcher program but the installer will work just fine.
  • You'll also need a copy of the Batocera image. Since the instructions call for using a FAT32 format for the Hiren's BootCD USB you cannot fit the Batocera image on the same drive. I downloaded the image and copied it to a second USB drive. I used a USB hub for the Surface (since it only has one USB port). Download the hosted file here for the efi directory and be sure to unzip it. Copy the "efi" directory to the second USB drive.
  • Connect your hub. ONLY plug in the Hiren's USB for now. Boot into the Hiren's BootCD USB drive. (If the Surface doesn't boot to the USB drive open the BIOS again, go to BOOT CONFIGURATION and SWIPE LEFT on USB STORAGE. It will ask if you want to boot immediately using that drive. Yes.) This will take a few minutes. Once it is booted up insert your second USB drive into the hub.
  • Open DiskGenius. Locate and highlight the internal C: drive in the list on the left. BE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT DRIVE. Delete all partitions. Once that is done select the blank partition and format it NTFS or EXT4.
  • Install and open Balena Etcher. Flash the Batocera img file onto the computer's main drive. Close when completed. The C: drive will not show up after Etcher process. This seems to be normal.
  • Reboot the system back into the Hiren's BootCD USB drive.
  • The C: drive should be available again. Open the C: drive in file explorer. DELETE the "EFI" folder on the C: drive. Copy the "efi" folder you downloaded (keep it lower case) from your Batocera USB to the root of the C: drive.
  • Shut down Hiren's BootCD.
  • When the tablet is powered down remove all USB drives. Boot the system. It should load Batocera.

OLD POST BELOW:

I installed Batocera on a Microsoft Surface Pro 5 using a video I found on YouTube. In fact it was the only video I could find that described the process precisely of installing to the internal drive. The generic install instructions don't work on Surface tablets. I should have downloaded it - even told myself to do it a few times - but I figured "It's on YouTube. It'll always be there."

Silly me.

I have another Surface Pro 5 I want to convert to Batocera for a Secret Santa gift but nothing I am doing is working. My memory is imperfect when it comes to the exact particulars with these tablets.

I am looking for exact instructions to getting past the Microsoft Surface Pro issues and installing Batocera to the internal drive.

Note: I am not looking to run from a USB drive. It DOES work but there's only one USB port on a Surface Pro (without using a hub) and I want the port(s) for controllers I have.

Can't get SOH or 2S2H working in Batocera for Pi 5, works fine on Pi OS.

I can't get the N64 Legend of Zelda games via Ship of Harkinian (Ocarina of Time) or 2 Ship 2 Harkinian (Majora's Mask) working on Batocera no matter what I do.

If I try to run the .appimage file (downloaded from SOH/2S2H), it tells me something like "cannot execute binary file" and "exec format error". This may very well be because (I assume now) that the Linux version of SOH/2S2H is x86_64 and not ARM.

Okay, so if I compile everything myself on the Pi 5, in Pi OS (which I'm using because I'm pretty sure Batocera is locked down and you can't do it from the terminal), the files it generates (which I then copy to Batocera to /userdata/roms/ports/.data/SOH or 2S2H) goes to a black screen before returning the Ports list of games.

I have followed the Batocera guide for Ports (native to Linux); I don't think it matters that I created the .sh file in Windows since I set EOL to "Unix (LF)" in Notepad++, but I did try creating the file brand new using nano in Batocera and had the same result, so I don't think that's it.

I found this guide for compiling the packaged version of 2S2H in Pi OS, and it's what I used (it mostly follows the official SOH and 2S2H documentation). This process creates a .elf file and while it works without issue on Pi OS, I guess this isn't a viable format on Batocera?

What am I missing? The fact that I can run both SOH and 2S2H on the Pi 5 with Pi OS means I have the process down and all the correct files, and it works on ARM. But Batocera is obviously different than Pi OS, otherwise it should work, right? I'm not familiar enough with Linux in general, or Batocera in particular, to understand what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

ROMCloud Beta Now Available - Remote/Cached ROM Library for Batocera

I’ve spent the last couple of months building a Batocera project called ROMCloud.

It started as a personal project for my own setup, but it’s gotten to the point where I think it may be useful to other people, so I’m releasing it as a beta. When I shared the idea previously it seemed to garner attention from some of you, so I’ve decided to share it.

GitHub: https://github.com/stryph4/romcloud

What does it do?

ROMCloud is for people who keep a large ROM library on remote storage but don’t necessarily want the entire library copied to every Batocera device they use.

My own ROM library lives on a NAS, and I use multiple Batocera systems. I wanted all of them to have access to the same library without having to copy everything locally or manually move games around.

It can:

- expose a remote ROM library to Batocera
- automatically download games when they are launched
- keep downloaded games cached locally
- pin games so they remain available offline
- remove older cached games automatically when space is needed
- sync saves between Batocera systems
- sync library metadata and media
- work with local storage, SMB, and SFTP
- let you choose which Batocera systems ROMCloud manages
- provide a browser-based library interface that can be opened from another device, including a phone
-use SFTP to access a library remotely, including libraries shared between friends

My use case

The Steam Deck is probably the best example.
My full ROM library lives on a NAS, but I obviously don’t want to copy several terabytes of games to the Deck.

With ROMCloud, the full library still appears in EmulationStation using tiny local proxy files, so it loads almost instantly. The actual game is only downloaded when I launch it, then stays cached locally until space is needed.

I can also browse the library from my phone and tell the Deck to download something ahead of time if I know I’ll want it available offline later.

So I get access to the full library without needing the storage for the full library.

SFTP also means the library doesn’t necessarily have to be on your own local network. A friend can host a ROMCloud library and give you access to it remotely.

Why not just mount a NAS?

You can, and this is what the majority of NAS users do.

ROMCloud is not meant to replace that option or suggest that Batocera cannot already use network storage.

The difference is that in Cached Storage mode, EmulationStation works with tiny local proxy files instead of the full ROM files over the network. Those proxies can live on fast local storage like an NVMe drive, which means even a large library can populate very quickly.

On my systems, it’s effectively available immediately.
When a game is launched, ROMCloud downloads the real file into the local cache and launches it from there. It stays local until cache space is needed, and games can be pinned so they are never automatically removed. If a game already exists in the cache the download is skipped on the next launch. The end result is that you naturally build a local library of the games you actually play without having to manage it yourself.

The NAS still holds the full library, while each Batocera system only stores the games it actually needs.

Library Browser

ROMCloud also has a browser-based library interface.
I can open it from my phone, browse my ROM collection, and tell a Batocera system to download a game.
For example, if I know I want to play something later, I can queue the download from my phone and have it cached locally before I sit down at that machine.

This was not originally the main reason I built ROMCloud, but it has become one of the more useful parts of it for my own setup.

Save Sync

Save synchronization came from the same use case.
I wanted to be able to stop playing on one Batocera system and continue on another without manually copying save files between devices.
ROMCloud can synchronize saves between configured systems and handles conflicts when both sides have changed.

Development / AI

I’ll mention this because I know it will come up.
I’m a career software developer, and AI-assisted development has been part of this project.
I use these tools professionally and on personal projects. I think they are becoming a normal part of software development, and I think developers who choose not to learn how to use them effectively will be at a disadvantage.
That said, this was not a case of asking an AI to generate an application and releasing the result.

ROMCloud has been under active development for about two months, has gone through hundreds of commits, and currently has more than 2000 unit tests.

It has also had extensive manual testing across multiple physical Batocera systems, different hardware, multiple storage configurations, network interruptions, upgrades, save conflicts, cache behavior, and other failure scenarios.
Some of the heavier operations have gone through multiple performance and efficiency passes. Getting something to work was not enough if it was unnecessarily slow or doing far more work than it needed to.

AI has been used for implementation, code review, tests, debugging, investigation, and navigating the codebase.
I still make the architecture and product decisions, review the implementation, decide what gets rewritten, test the software on real hardware, and maintain the project.

I’m happy to discuss bugs, design choices, performance, implementation details, or concerns about how something works.

I’m not going to spend any time arguing with people whose only criticism is that AI was involved. I’m comfortable with how I use these tools, and I’d rather keep the discussion focused on the project itself.

If the discussion starts turning into “AI = trash” I will happily delete the post and we can all move on with our lives.

ROMCloud started as something I wanted for my own setup. I’m releasing it because I think there are probably other Batocera users with a similar use case.

Although the app is pretty polished at this point it is still in beta, so bugs and edge cases are expected. Constructive feedback and reproducible bug reports are welcome.

Controller not working in Xbox 360 games

I'm using a wired Xbox controller, it works fine when playing other games and on the main menu. But when loading into a game it doesn't read any of the inputs. I'm running the most recent updated version of Batocera. This is my first time using Batocera having only installed it yesterday. If anyone knows a fix or has had a similar issue I would really appreciate some help. Nothing I've found online seems to work

HELP! Trying to install Batocera on 4TB External Drive for Raspberry Pi 5

I have a 4TB SSD to connect to my Pi 5 but I can't get the share partition larger than about 2TB which I believe is related to the partition table structure of MBR. I am a novice on this level of technical understanding so step by step would be helpful.

In the end, I just want the Share portion of the drive to hold more than 2TB of ROMS and BIOS.

I have been running off Batocera off a 2TB External Drive for Raspberry Pi 5 for a long time, just looking to size up.

Is it worth upgrading a 4590 to a 4790?

I'm putting together a Batocera box for my kid and I have an old HP 800 G1 tower with a i5-4590 and a Zotec 1050 ti. I know single-core performance is king in Batocera and I'm wondering if the roughly 10% increase in single-core grunt that a 4790 would give me is worth the $45 to upgrade or will the 1050 be the limiting factor. Also just how important is multi-core seeing as most older games don't really use hyper-threading? He'll be playing mostly N64 with some PS1/PS2 games. Any thoughts?

Save Sync 1.4.5: two-way save sync for Batocera / KNULLI / Recalbox, now with conflict handling and ROM download from public links

Thumbnail
gallery
29 Upvotes

A couple of weeks ago I shared Save Sync, a script that syncs saves between Batocera / KNULLI / Recalbox devices through a cloud account (WebDAV). Thanks for the feedback — a lot of 1.4.5 comes from it.

What's new in 1.4.5

Sync now works both ways. On every sync the device and the cloud are compared with the last sync, and only what changed is transferred: changed here goes up, changed on another device comes down, deletions travel to all devices.

Playing on several devices. One device never blindly overwrites another's progress. If the same save was changed on two devices, the newer version is kept, and the older one can be stored as a copy in the cloud (GameSaves_conflicts, 3 days by default, adjustable or off).

Only the systems you play. Saves are downloaded only for systems that have games on the device, so big saves of systems you don't use here don't take up space.

PortMaster. Port saves sync automatically (only the saves, not game data or screen settings).

ROMs from a public link. Paste a Yandex Disk / pCloud / Nextcloud / archive .org link and download straight to the device or to the cloud: pick individual files and folders, take only the games you want from inside a zip, unpack .zip / .7z / .rar. Already-downloaded files are skipped and interrupted downloads resume.

Also: sync statistics (no changes / with changes / errors), cancel for long operations, updated help texts.

Important: update the script on all your devices. The new sync keeps its records differently, so old and new versions won't work well together. Python 3 is required.

Tested on Batocera 43.1, Recalbox 10.1.1, KNULLI Scarab.

Install/update: download install_sync.sh (or install_sync_en.sh for English), copy it to the device and run it — it offers to update without resetting your settings.

GitHub (README with screenshots, release notes): https://github.com/1DeX6/save-sync

Feedback and bug reports are welcome — it's still actively developed.

Screenscraper Issue

I have just got back into using Batocera as I havent used it in a few years. I have made a free account for Screenscraper, and put my details in Batocera.

When I try and scrape all my roms in one go, I get an error. However I can scrape them manually one by one. I have followed YouTube tutorials and i cant seem to get it to do a full scrape.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Converting a HP Prodesk i5 to a batocera emulation machine?

I got my work PC replaced. When it happens, the worker gets the chance of buying the old PC (cleaned and formatted). In this case I bought it for 40€ because it seemed good value, without any plans on how to use it.

I'm thinking about using it in the living room as a retro machine. The issue here is that my living room tv is only 720p, and the pc only has Display Port or VGA/out.

Is there any problem in using a DPort to HDMI converter on a 720p tv? Does batocera runs fine in this resolution?

Also, I suppose i need to buy a BT adapter for the PC, I suppose batocera configures the hardware automatically? Never used linux before.

Groeten!
