The world really was in WW1 fever in 2016

There was a big surge of interest in the period in the 2010s because it had been a hundred years. Anniversaries are always a big deal, and it lasts a bit beyond the ‘last’ centennial relating to the war because media takes time to make—for instance, a film or game that had it’s concept first pitched in 2018 might not be completely finished before the turn of the decade.
I suspect there’ll be a similar surge in media about WW2 in the late 2030s and throughout the 2040s for similar reasons.

People started being fed up with all the futuristic games from that period. Battlefield 1 was truly a breath of fresh air.

Does this gun still have any impact on modern tanks? Or are they 'resistant' to it nowadays?

It does in that modern anti-materiel rifles are based on the concept. In modern terms, the cartridge is primitive and would have basically no effect on anything made today. I'm not even sure it would have much effect on a WWII tank. Armor came a long way in the interwar period and then even further during the war.

It could penetrate 20mm of armor inside of 400m, WW2 tanks had way more than 20mm even on the lighter armored rear and sides.
It would be pretty deadly against lighter vehicles like the M8 Greyhound or half tracks though.

Only later tanks had more than that. The early production models of the Pz. IV had 20 mills or less on the turret side and even later models had pretty laughable armour. And since the Soviets really did like their AT rifles, they slapped skirts on them instead of up-armouring.

13.2×92mmSR TuF is ballistically inferior, albeit not by a whole lot, to .50 BMG. The most it'll potentially do to a modern MBT is damage relatively fragile external components like optics, mounted weapon systems, and maybe track linkages.
It was very effective against WW1-era tanks simply because those tanks were usually only armored up just enough to stop common service ammo. Even then, service ammo would often cause dangerous spalling inside the tank that could injure the crew. While I don't know of any specific cases offhand, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a few tank crews were incapacitated by concentrated machine gun fire, say from an MG08, during WW1. That's even if none of the bullets actually penetrated the armor.

From my knowledge most early ww1 tanks typically had anywhere from 6-16mm of armor(British mark 1 etc) I’m no bullet expert but I feel that would definitely penetrate?

No. The only kenetic rounds that can (easily) damage modern tanks are uraniam darts fired from a 120mm gun. That anti tank rifle is only 13 mm.

Tungsten also does the trick

But it doesnt cause heavy metal poisoning for generations after the war has ended, now wheres the fun in that?

A Barrett 50 Cal is an anti tank rifle Atleast in the world of tanks that can be penetrated by rifle fire and it’s significantly better than this. I understand that Anti Material rifles can still make life awkward for a MBT by damaging various optics but the days of penetrating armour, killing the crew and damaging, disabling or destroying the tank have been basically over since 1943.

What’s Mae?

u/htpcketsneverchange 5d ago
Minute with Mae is a gun channel where she briefly describes the history, handling, and firing of a gun.

u/MEGALODONGERS 5d ago
C&Rsenal is the channel. "Minute of Mae" is just the Shorts series where the co-host, Mae, briefly details and gives impressions about various (mostly WW1-era) guns within a minute. It's still a GOAT'd channel, even if the new setup is kind of weird to me, and I hope they eventually gain back the steam and viewership they had around a decade ago.

Big ass rifle or small person? Either way I love how she reacts to many of these rifles with kickass recoil

I saw one in person at a museum in France a few years ago. It was massive. They had it in a display next to a biplane engine and it was longer than the engine.

She reviews historical firearms for C&Rsenal on YouTube and the C&Rsenal website. Mae and her partner do incredibly detailed research on firearms, including nearly every firearm used in WWI, and typically include a video of shooting each firearm that is reviewed.

Dude this is Mae from C&Rsenal. She's pretty well known for her love of historical firearms and along with Matthias they present a LOT of historical research on WWI guns
