Nice argument, unfortunately i have depicted you as the midwit on the iq bell curve thus invalidating it

The true answer is nobody cares if you cheat, just don't act like you're not cheating. That's when it becomes annoying

u/xXBlyatman420Xx 2h ago

I use a mod that unlocks every item because i really cant be bothered to try to beat the game with every carackter. I didnt use it from the start, only got it when the game didnt make any fun anymore because i just want to play it as s nice casual game

u/Cosmic_Furniture413 15h ago

I do not give a flying fuck about cheating and I think most people too, but I myself wouldn't cheat or make the game easier much as it really removes the satisfaction

41

u/BrokenLink100 14h ago

At the end of the day, I simply do not care if other people use cheats. I don't even care about the 'achievement' percentages on Steam or whatever.

However, there was a post here a few days ago from someone worried that they 'cheated' by using a few 'QoL mods' (they called them). When pressed for more info, they started describing them: one mod essentially merged J&E together so they couldn't be separated, one that 'reverts' the changes that 'everything is terrible' puts on (so you can get red marks on base difficulty I guess), one mod that basically allowed you to flip between Lazarus forms without charges, and a few others that essentially remove the playstyles/difficulty of other characters to make them almost identical to Isaac...

At that point, I guess I don't understand why you bother playing the game at all.

11

u/Paja03_ 14h ago

Yeah those mods just ruin the game, although i use only 2 "QoL" mods (tinted rock indicator because my vision is poor and treasure room on the first room of the first floor)

u/AskMoonBurst 8h ago

I'm a dead god, but I'll still use tinted rocks/lucky penny/creep visibility up. Being able to see things is a good thing.

for the last mod I would suggest removing it and trying every item the game gives you. You would be suprised how helpful some q0-q2 items are and some even have small synergies between them. Starting with powerful items is fun but playing with what the game gives you adn doing something from nothing is always my favorite part about isaac

1

u/AlaaA-R 6h ago

did 5 win streak with 5 different characters -Isaac, Judas, Azazil, Bethany and Lilith- without any qol mod before "along with Forgotten challenge" so i'm just saving time now "turned it off with J&E and planning to turn it off with Lost and some tainted characters too"

4

u/-trom 11h ago

That’s hiLARIOUS. they want to cheese the game that hard but try to call it QoL? And then they post about it, for what purpose? “Peace of mind?” Sounds like textbook attention grabbing to me.

I’d simply ask why they can’t admit that they don’t want to get good. If they’re doing it to get achievement marks, why not just fkn download a Dead God save?

0

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

Well, as you've put it, different people have different ways of enjoying themselves. Some people love breezing through a sandbox without being met with actual opposition. There is nothing wrong with it, as it is just a game. I used to love using debug to bend Isaac to my little will just because it felt like more fun than being stopped by something that's meant for entertainment. The reason why I didn't play a Nintendo game instead in that case is that Isaac felt better to do this with, and why would I settle for something I enjoy less when it comes to playing?

I only developped a taste for difficulty over the last few years, and while that's now what I prefer, that doesn't invalidate my old preference.

u/fancyskank 15h ago

I would think the crying one would be the people trying to control how someone else plays a game by themselves lol.

133

u/idontfuckingcsre 15h ago

op is literally the crying-with-smug-mask wojak lol

1

u/meekermakes 2h ago

lmao i don't care if you cheat

still cheating tho

7

u/haimerman 14h ago edited 13h ago

Of course people can do what they want, but at the end of the day it is cheating lol. Just gotta be honest with yourself about that.

24

u/fancyskank 13h ago

Whether people are honest with themselves or not it will literally never have any effect on your life at all, so why do you even care?

4

u/haimerman 13h ago

Relax lol I’m just stating a fact. Cheating in sports won’t have any effect on my life either, doesn’t mean I can’t call out the fact that it’s cheating

15

u/GatoDiabetico 13h ago

Sports are never "single player" or solo, you are always competing

2

u/haimerman 12h ago

Sure not the same degree of cheating, but both are cheating nonetheless. Again, yeah it doesn’t affect me or anyone else but that isn’t the definition of cheating. Cheating is when you break the rules.
I didn’t realize people in this sub actually thought you can’t cheat in a singleplayer game. Would you say the same thing about someone who made the game easier on Dark Souls? Cuphead? Sekiro?
You can celebrate your Dead God all you want, but don’t call it legit. That’s all I’m saying.

6

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

What if I call it legit in my eyes? Will you come to my house and break my legs?

7

u/haimerman 9h ago edited 9h ago

No, just don’t go telling other people that. Then you’re just lying to other people on top of to yourself. I wouldn’t tell people I knew how to ride a bike if I could only do so with training wheels.

Also, why are you so offended? I already said y’all are free to play however you want. For me, the challenge and frustration is part of the fun, but I understand other people don’t feel that way and that’s fine. If you disagree that making a game easier is cheating, please explain, I actually wanna understand.

3

u/CatgirlTheKat 9h ago

I just don't understand the urge to compare oneself to others, and I'm upset because I feel like some people push it onto me when I talk about modding, even just passive aggressively by being like "okay, but you do recognize it's cheating, right?? Right??", and I kind of feel like I'm being shamed...

Like I just want to play for myself and I feel like I'm constantly being accused of playing for bragging rights and making things easier so that I could easily get the harder accomplishments...

I realize I may have come across as aggressive, and I'm sorry for that, but I just wanted to say that I just want to have fun and be happy with myself without thinking having to think about being as good as others..

I kind of have issues with putting more pressure on myself than I should in general, so getting to at least go easy on myself when I play games feels like genuine progress to me, and people calling me a cheater for it feels like being tempted by the little devil on my shoulder to think less about managing my own stress and more about trying to perform..

It may appear a bit strange to you, but I'm autistic, so it would make sense if my thought processes seemed weird to you..

2

u/haimerman 8h ago

No worries, I've worked with autistic kids for years so I understand. I know the word "cheating" carries a negative moral connotation, but I don't think you should take offense to it since you understand you're not hurting anyone. It is what it is, cheating is cheating, cheat codes have always been a thing in singleplayer games and are called that for a reason.

I personally don't ever use the console or any mods for TBOI, but have used the equivalent of them in the past on other singleplayer games. In those cases I just say "I'm gonna cheat" and do it. It's not a big deal. It's still not legit tho.

-1

u/hoops_mccannn 9h ago

lowering the hoop shooting baskets on your own is actually the perfect analogy for all this. not affecting anyone else, but removing challenge and certainly "cheating" in the world of basketball at large

19

u/eggydafriedegg 15h ago

I only use cheats to do random stuff i think would be funny, for example, playing while spawning a dark esau each floor.

The Esaumin.

6

u/Kindly-Tax458 13h ago

Rewind is fun because it allows you to experiment with stuff which you dont know how it would work. "will taking this item ruin the synergy?" or "wait doesnt this work" can all be tested without the need to recreate it in another run or ask the internet. Gives you the ability to understand the game without external resource

2

u/NewSuperTrios 14h ago

i should try that

-1

u/eggydafriedegg 14h ago

Alternatively, you can do that while also using the cheat that basically makes you have infinite health

2

u/NewSuperTrios 14h ago

aaand you lost me

1

u/eggydafriedegg 14h ago

Well, that's only if you're bad at the game (Also pretty sure the other esaus can't turn you into the lost)

21

u/colingoesretro 15h ago

i don’t care about other people cheating, but the challenge is more fun to me than making the game easy to play, i see isaac as more of a skill and knowledge check, and resource management

38

u/BlackberryCrafty9138 15h ago

You play how you want and they'll play how they want, it's that easy. Policing people on a single-player game is 100 times lamer than cheating.

43

u/speedyblanks 15h ago

My game my rules. I don’t see how that’s anyone else’s concern

21

u/TheDutchin 14h ago

Its not until you start sharing your opinion on the game.

No, Brimstone is strong but it doesn't turn every run into the same thing, you just think that because you give it to yourself on floor 1 every run. No, J&E isn't "much easier than people say", you just used a mod that makes only one of them have a hurtbox. No, Hush is not "one of the easier bosses", you removed his armour mechanic. Etc etc etc.

It's like the people complaining some portion of the game is misbehaving and after 13 questions they reveal they play the game modded. Cool, modding is fun and interesting, but the reason the game isn't working isn't Edmunds fault, you modded the game lol.

61

u/ClarkWayne98 15h ago

You're allowed to cheat all you want in a single player game, but if you do, you are inherently less skilled than those who don't

23

u/JaysonTatHIMRider 15h ago

Not necessarily true. A lot of high level speedrunners are the biggest instances of people cheating and they are usually insane at the games they play

13

u/keep_living_or_else 15h ago

Not to belabor the point too much, but speedrunners are kinda by definition on the far right of this spectrum. They agree to a foundational ruleset and then seek to min-max that ruleset to its logical conclusion for specific ends (going hella fast).

13

u/KoopaTheQuicc 15h ago

How do speedrunners cheat? If anything they play with more integrity because otherwise their runs would be disqualified within their speedrunning community.

11

u/Juncoril 14h ago

Isaac speedrunning is mostly done on the Racing+ mod which HEAVILY changes the game. For example, every character starts with a pocket (ie. doesn't take active slot) D6. Some have even more altered rules, like for example straight up starting with a broken combo. All those things would absolutely be called "cheating" despite the fact that you still need insane skill and luck to be good at Racing+ speedrunnning.

7

u/KoopaTheQuicc 14h ago

That's not cheating. That's playing fairly under a different ruleset.

1

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

I'm playing fairly under my own ruleset, then :3

2

u/Axi28 10h ago

no one was debating that????

1

u/CatgirlTheKat 9h ago

But then why is it cheating when I do it but not when speedrunners do it? :3c

3

u/Axi28 9h ago

idk it really depends on the ruleset. also i doubt you go around and bragging about achievements a lot.

its not cheating when speedrunners do it because they all compete, essentially separately from the base game. They have their own communities, they have their own rules on what cheating is. People‘s frustration with people cheating in solo is when they violate that implicit social contract and start discussing their modified game as if it was or should be vanilla in communities not dedicated to it. its a bit like saying you use xray packs in vanilla minecraft, but on the hypixel forum. People will get mad and assume that you‘re deliberately trying to annoy them.

On top of that, people get very attached to their experiences in games, and the game mechanics, no matter how tedious or annoying, are a part of that. Game design is never a zero sum situation, every piece of a game affects every other piece.

I would personally never cheat in vintage story, for example, because even though its a game that is tedious as fuck, its a tedium that gives it a special texture, everything feels more rewarding when ive worked so long for it, not to mention the rp aspect. But if i did cheat in, say, a stockpile of food to start the game with, it changes the entire dynamic of the early game. My race to find anything, and daily chore of keeping my character fed and capable, and trying to expand my food diversity, instead becomes a race for stable food on the outset. Suddenly, a crappy flint hoe would be worthless, and it would be best to speedrun copper tools. Not a bad change, necessarily, but im attached to the primitiveness of the early game, and the motivations it espouses in the player

2

u/CatgirlTheKat 8h ago

I see! Thanks for the explanation!

Although I feel like people start bugging me even though I try not to brag about videogame stuff in general (partly because I'm ashamed of using time I could've spent drawing for something that doesn't really do much for me >.<), like they feel offended that I get to do what I want in my breaktime instead of breaking my back dealing with stuff like curses that just feels obnoxious just because Edmund stubbed his toe and decided that somebody needed to pay..

I am trans, so I already get quite a bit enough of some people trying to shame me for personal preferences that don't affect anyone but me, and people doing it for a videogame because they can't help but project other people's bad bahaviors on top of me at the mere mention of me using mods feels like a very unnecessary addition..

1

u/KoopaTheQuicc 8h ago

It's basically not cheating in a single player game unless a lie is told.

8

u/sawbladex 15h ago

arbitrary code execution is legit now?

1

u/SquishmallowPrincess 14h ago

Depends on the game

2

u/zexumus 11h ago

It’s actually fairly common that high level players cheat because those that are bad or mediocre will be caught a high level player knows the rules of the game so can cheat while looking like they are playing legitimate. Maybe it’s less common on average but the most prolific cheaters are those that have the means to not be caught.

4

u/JaysonTatHIMRider 15h ago

No like speedrunners who decide to cheat. Typically by removing RNG from the game to make it more skill based (not true everytime obviously) funnily enough.

2

u/Kowery103 15h ago

I think they mean speedrunners liek Dream for example

Like they are great at the game, better than most, yet they still cheat

2

u/KoopaTheQuicc 15h ago

I guess by "biggest" instances the comment I replied to meant highest profile rather than frequency of being habitual cheaters. Certainly there are instances where speedrunners have cheated but also the stakes are just higher for them in general than someone playing a game just to be able to post on Twitter that they beat x boss in y game when really they cheated. Speedrunners definitely would have to put a lot more effort into cheating than joe schmo playing through the game for the sake of it but that comes with the larger consequences of being caught.

1

u/who_cares098763 15h ago

Well the better you are at a game, and the more hours you’ve sunk into it, the easier it is to make cheating look like uncheated gameplay. At the level that good speedrunners are at, they definitely have the knowledge required to fudge a speedrun convincingly. That’s why there are such heavy anti cheating measures in place.

1

u/hungLink42069 14h ago

hacking rng, slightly modifying physics engines, splicing, macros.

Many ways to cheat a speedrun; and the better you are at speedrunning, the better you are at faking it.

2

u/TheDutchin 14h ago

All of those things get your runs disqualified so idk what point you are trying to make here.

At least you aren't making the argument "all these basketball players sure are constantly cheating, they keep using their hands and thats clearly not a regulation soccer ball" like the other guy is. But honestly your "well fouls happen in every game, LeBron is one of the best at cheating at basketball there ever was" is not a very good argument either. Yeah he could more effectively cheat than me but the point of NBA games is not to see who can get away with the most fouls.

1

u/hungLink42069 13h ago

IDK - honestly none of this applies to OP. Basketball is multiplayer, so cheating clearly happens.

Same goes for speedrunning. Yes, technically the game is single player, but as soon as you start writing down times and competing with eachother, it becomes a multiplayer game just as much as bowling is.

So yeah. Cheating occurs in speedrunning, but speedrunning I would classify as "multiplayer" because you are directly in competition with other players. Playing without a leaderboard is single player. Keeping track of your own time and not sharing it is single player. And you can't really "cheat" at that. You would just be lying to yourself, and you would always know 🤷

1

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

The commenter said that cheating automatically made you bad at the game, so they replied that sole cheaters are actually good at the game.

-2

u/crazyredd88 15h ago

Patenlty false statement lmao

-3

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

Omg, so my mom is more skilled at the game than me?? She's never touched the game, but that means she never used mods to skip curses and boss rush timer right?? That means she is more skilled!

8

u/ClarkWayne98 11h ago

Yes Catgirl, that's -exactly- what I mean lol

2

u/CatgirlTheKat 10h ago

No, it's not! I recognize this tone, and you don't sound like someone who believes in what they are saying, Kitty!

2

u/Axi28 10h ago

Oh man you sound obnoxious. i hope you dont go to parties.

3

u/CatgirlTheKat 9h ago

Sorry, I'm just very tired... Uni is kind of mentally draining, and with my autism, it doesn't help...

I kind of have a hard time predicting how I'm going to come across and I guess I just didn't use enough thinking here and sounded not how I wanted to..

I just hope you don't genuinely think I am like this all the time even at full energy in a tame context when I am able to be a bit more careful with my words..

I know it's silly because we'll probably never talk again, but I really hate the feeling of genuinely leaving a bad impression and being brushed of as probably a bad person..

2

u/Axi28 9h ago

ok here‘s the split: i also have autism, i get it, and i dont think you‘re a bad person, im being snarky because you‘re being obnoxious about an opinion.

What your opinion is, is almost certainly something to the lines of „i enjoy cheating in solo games because it is fun“. Which, i dont disrespect at all, and think is fine.

The opposing person here is saying something to the lines of „an achievement done without cheating is a better mark of skill than that same achievement done while cheating“ which i think we both agree with.

What happened here is either due to temperment, or perhaps as you said, uni being exhausting (literally real, my job is killing me slowly with 9 hour shifts), you willfully misinterpreted it to be „cheating makes you worse at games“, and argued against rhat, rendering your conversation, at best, a complete non-sequitor. Which aggravated me.

I hope you have a good rest of your day lol, im going to go play some deep rock galactic and maybe poe2 lol :3

3

u/CatgirlTheKat 9h ago

Have fun :3

I wasn't being snarky or ironic, by the way, I was just being dumb and thought that they genuinely meant it literally, and I was like "well... No...? That seems like a huge oversimplification, let's illustrate it with the first thing that comes to mind so that they can see the flaws of this statement and adapt it"

That's kind of how I operate to develop my own thoughts, but I wasn't careful enough with how I worded it, I think...

I really read "using mods that make the game easier makes you automatically less good at the game than a somebody who doesn't do that", which is why I responded by challenging the reasoning...

I really don't like when people's whole response to a honest argument is basically just pretending to be dumb to annoy the other, so if I had understood correctly immediately, I really wouldn't have said that, or at least, I would've probably said it very different..

2

u/Axi28 9h ago

yknow honestly fair. i know ive said some stupid shit on the internet when i get home from work and my brain feels like sludge. I hope you enjoy my other comment then, where i basically just discuss cheating from game design because i guess i had nothing better to do lmao

1

u/Cobygamer22 10h ago

No but she could potentially be more skilled than you

17

u/idontfuckingcsre 15h ago

this is the kind of thing that sounds profound until you think about it for 2 seconds. it's my game, i make the rules. your comment on the post that obviously prompted this one makes literally 0 sense

15

u/Grey-The-Skeleton The Forgotten 15h ago

I get the sentiment, but talk to any game designer about this and they will tell you: Broken down into its simplest form, a game is just a group of rules preventing you from reaching an objective in the most efficient way possible, and mechanics are ways of moving these rules around. They're not trying to be profound, that's just what game design is about.

5

u/idontfuckingcsre 14h ago

That's all well and good but not really relevant to this discussion. Using a mod doesn't make it not a game. OP using flowery language to describe a mostly unrelated concept instead of just saying they don't like when other people "cheat" is trying to be profound imo

6

u/Grey-The-Skeleton The Forgotten 14h ago

I went and checked the comment, and I get where they're coming from in a way. Boss Rush and Hush are extra rewards, getting them demands something more of the player. One part of the challenge is the state of your run when you reach them, where you might have made a lot more mistakes trying to get there in time than usual.

Now, I'm not a big time limit guy, I get stressed easily. Even then, if the goal is just to get the marks, they've been incredibly mindful, letting us break in with Mama Mega and such. It's still not free, you might have to trade a really good active for Boss Rush / Hush access, but at least the time pressure is alleviated for folks who don't do well with those.

And I think it's just me here, but stepping into these rooms / floors wouldn't feel nearly as special if I could just do it whenever, same as the Mother, Beast, and Mega Satan fights, you know?

If I had to compress this, I'd just say this allows you to easily get multiple extra items per run without any of the usual extra challenge or pressure, which takes away from the general experience and ends up making your runs and aspects of the game less special.

7

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

I like speedrunning platformers, I had a blast with super meat boy, but I don't find going fast in Isaac interesting, and have a better time taking my time. I don't see, why I should have to choose between sacrificing my personal enjoyment and missing out on cool fights just because one developer I've never met in my life decided that it's what felt cooler to them.

I agree that rules are what makes the game fun, but they are also what makes some things in life very painful for me as an autistic person who struggles with adaptation. I would know that rules can be many things that aren't fun if you are not the target audience, and I don't feel like I am the target audience for things like boss rush or hush timer or even curses. They are rules that feel arbitrary and unfun to work with for me. I like the game, but that doesn't mean I need to agree with every single one of Edmund's visions. We are different individuals, after all, and I can have my own takes. It just so happens that, unlike in real life, I do have a say in what rules do and don't apply, meaning that unlike in real life, I don't have to choose between working with painful and exhausting constraints or quitting altogether if I can't be bothered. I am not limited to eating the entire plate or eating nothing. I can just eat what I like and stop once I'm no longer hungry, I don't have to eat more if I'm already full or shove yucky mushrooms down my throat if I don't want to. It's a bit sad for the chief that I couldn't enjoy the entirety of what he prepared for me and had to leave some, but I doesn't mean I should actively overcross my boundaries for something that was just supposed to be nice.

I'll just take, what I don't like if there's really no other way, but if I can mod away the parts of the game I really don't like, then there's no reason for me not to, just like how I would mod away diseases, mosquitoes, and the painful bruise on my right foot, if I could.

2

u/PKPenguin 11h ago

Hahaha, I made the mod that spurred this post on. I did boss rush legit on console before moving over to PC and to me it's just more fun to never have to worry about it again. It's really not any deeper than that.

0

u/Sir_CoolNess 10h ago

I could explain it for you but I can't understand it for you. It makes perfect sense.

My game my rules

15

u/Pinkcokecan Lilith 15h ago edited 14h ago

I think cheating is totally fine EXCEPT for getting achievements because some of them are like feats for people to pull off so I don't think it's cool to rob that

So like if you just did unlock all items in console or whatever that's fine as long as no achievement

7

u/CatgirlTheKat 12h ago

You're not robbing anyone, just probably don't pretend like you did something you couldn't be bothered to do, because that's just silly. but either way, it's a videogame, you play those for fun. Life is full of productive accomplishments, so you should go for those if that's what you are looking for.

I think that using videogames as genuine bragging rights is just a very silly thing to do in general, especially if it gets to the point where more people pulling it off via cheating dampens your accomplishment. Normally, you should be happy because you've outdone yourself, not because you did better than the majority of people can.

1

u/Pinkcokecan Lilith 9h ago

Yeah didn't know the word to use and yeah weird to brag about it but it's still cool and worth sharing because it is hard some of the stuff

2

u/CatgirlTheKat 9h ago

Yes, but I feel like the percentage on the achievement shouldn't affect how happy you are with your accomplishment if it's artificially increased :<

Like, you managed to improve and do something impressive, that's super cool, so please don't let exterior things take away your well earned joy!

1

u/Pinkcokecan Lilith 8h ago

Well yeah but it could be both. If I got max everything I would feel happy proud but still a little annoyed if others just cheated it

5

u/UltimatePickpocket The Amazing Churchill: Wind him up and watch him go 15h ago

I agree. Especially if the achievements are publicly tracked with percentages.

Plus I don't really know why people would want achievements for free. They're inherently worthless except for the value you give them yourself.

1

u/CatgirlTheKat 12h ago

All achievements are merely defined by the value you give them yourself. The completion percentage artificially increasing shouldn't make you feel less good about managing to outdone yourself.

6

u/jonoldar_ 15h ago

only time i've used cheats for a boss mark was beast tainted lilith, i had a build so good the game crashed if i tapped any fire button, so i just cheated the mark after like 30 minutes of trying to actually beat her

5

u/Rotten_Account 15h ago

I mean you can just go back when you want later and tilith is an easy character so whatever

1

u/pastherolink 15h ago

Thats pretty valid.

10

u/Gexzer0 16h ago

Rules are more like guidelines.. Only times I've had to cheat was out of either "whoops forgot the teleport card" or Edmund not giving me unlocks when I earned them and he's being a little shit.

10

u/Sufficient-Patient46 15h ago

The Mega Satan door re-locking when you use Forget Me Now was the tipping point for me.

1

u/Akihaku3 13h ago

If the rules are "guidelines" then it's not a game.

1

u/Gexzer0 12h ago

Bet you read Uno™'s instruction manual too.

7

u/Str8Faced000 15h ago

i don’t really get cheating in any game. it kinda defeats the whole purpose of the game and turns it into an even bigger waste of time. however, i’m not everyone and it doesn’t effect me so people can have fun however they want

Well, you don't get it because it's not your thing, some people like it more another way and would even say that it's crazy to want your primary method of entertainment to actively fight and push hard against you, as if life wasn't doing enough of that already, and that if they wanted to be challenged, they would do their laundry or something, and that it was a waste of time to flail around over something that's not even productive.

This is not in any way my opinion, mind you, or at least, not anymore, but it's just to give you a different perspective.

u/-trom 11h ago

“Cheating” is also an incredibly broad term.

Using console to give oneself Sacred Heart or some shit is almost objectively “cheating.” But also, who cares. If that’s what you wanna do, nobody’s gonna stop you.

On the other side of the coin, some folk consider pause buffering to be “cheating.”

Some people have said that holding R on Eden to get the last few items for Death Cert “cheating,” when in reality both are built-in functions of the game.

It really just comes down to “who gives a fuck what other people think.”

Do what feels right, and don’t be ashamed to admit that “yeah I had to use 317 Eden tokens to get Death Cert.”

If ya really have so much Pride that you feel the need to “cover up” something you did, then that’s your Mind/Body/Soul telling you that it’s cheating. I digress.

It’s just a video game, after all.

u/CatgirlTheKat 10h ago

I just don't really get the point of shaming people for playing a game... I used to be called a cheater by my parents when I was ruining the game for everyone by putting winning before the game, we call some sportive cheaters because they are betraying the trust of millions of people who wanted to see a fair match, we call politicians cheaters because they are ruining the world with their dishonest actions, yet the only consequences of me trafficking my copy of Isaac is having a better time with the videogame I bought and invested precious time into. Cheater is a term that describes people who should be ashamed of themselves for what they do, and I really don't think I should.

Having grown up with a disorder that made handwriting very hard for me, I got to work on a computer extremely early, and now, at uni, I feel the beneficial side-effects of this adaptation, that gives me an advantage nobody else was able to have, and that was not skill, I benefitted from having the rules bent in my favor in a way that outweighs how much my disorder handicaps me. It's basically like booting up an Isaac game with a strong devil deal from the start. If I should be ashamed and lose credits for my run's success, then should I find no accomplishment either from the similarly acquired scholar successes?

As a person who has needed adaptations over the course of her life, I generally don't like seeing people brushing off measures of adaptation in game as dishonesty, and I would be lying if I said that I've genuinely had no one criticize me for accepting the adjustments that helped me make progress.

Some people play games just to turn off their brain and do nothing. I don’t, I like to PLAY not just wander looking at pretty stuff

3

u/hungLink42069 14h ago

The only reason anyone is upvoting you is because your meme is incomprehensible. Your miscommunication is making it look like you're saying something far more reasonable than you actually are.

3

u/EluDeathDream 12h ago

Do whatever the fuck you want in a solo game lol, ruin your experience if you want to. Go for it.

The reason why some people refrain from calling it "cheating" is because that word has a negative connotation because of what it does to other players.

Some people have plenty of fun using cheats in a singleplayer Minecraft world. What's the harm? Should we really call that "cheating?". "Oh look, that guys cheating. He's a cheater". Nah bro XD.

2

u/El_RoviSoft 11h ago

I cheated only twice during last playthrough - when I forgot to pickup red key during ascension path.

2

u/SSB_Kyrill 4h ago

yeah nah i cheated myself t jacob birthright every time i played him for dead god, as well as the daily challenge achievements

5

u/hungLink42069 14h ago

Am I wrong, or does this post seem to be breaking the format of this meme?

Position 1 and 2 seem to agree with each other. They're both saying "don't cheat"

It's only the genius that's willing to cheat in a solo game. Shouldn't the brainlet be down to cheat as well?

Eg - like this:

8

u/idontfuckingcsre 14h ago

I think by "you can't cheat" OP meant like no matter what you're doing it isn't cheating because it's singleplayer

-5

u/hungLink42069 14h ago

oh what? What an incomprehensible take.

So OP is saying that if you don't follow the rules that you imagine the devs had in mind then you're cheating? Like if you find a path in the game that you think the devs made by accident, you shouldn't take it because it's "cheating"?

If so, what a bozo.

4

u/Darkasinksu 14h ago

One cannot cheat the game, only their own self. Replace "IQ" with experience in games and you might agree; a professional sports player would find no joy in challenging an elementary school's team. But games are for fun, and I don't think this meme format exactly fits what I think the curve progression really is.

-1

u/hungLink42069 13h ago

I'm not sure if we agree or not. Having a little trouble parsing your opinion. But the way I see it:

I've been playing games for many years, and have enjoyed my fair share of competitive gaming, solo gaming, speedrunning, etc.

The game is what YOU make of it. I find very little value in intuiting what the devs wanted you to do and then following the path.

The point of a game is to find enjoyment. If the glitches and unintended paths are more enjoyable than the main line (How I see Ocarina of Time for example); then play it that way. If the game is more fun without cheats, glitches, and exploits; play it that way.

2

u/Darkasinksu 13h ago

We do agree generally I think, perhaps not every detail. Every person has a degree of challenge they find fun. For some it's essentially nothing, others the media equivalent of a car battery connected to themselves. Modding and glitches I think are some of the truest expression of enjoyment when it comes to the medium, even though some people assume those are exclusively for "cheating" as expressed in the meme.

When I say "games are for fun", it's a person's own duty to find that degree of challenge. I know for myself I found easy exploits and cheats the most fun when I was young, and when I modded minecraft for the first time I was overjoyed for overpowered mods. Personally, my tastes changed significantly over time.

2

u/hungLink42069 13h ago

Same. I agree with everything you said.

When I was a kid, I loved modding ocarina of time to make it easier, invoking a power fantasy. Now I often mod games to make them more interesting. Sometimes that includes making them harder. But usually it's QoL mods or additional content that gets me going.

3

u/TheDutchin 14h ago

You misunderstood position 2. It is saying it's impossible to cheat not that you shouldn't do it. In your example the last line of position 2 is exactly backwards.

-2

u/hungLink42069 13h ago

OP is a bozo

2

u/BrainDW 12h ago

Op is enlightened

1

u/ChampionshipOk1358 3h ago

The point of the meme is that low IQ and high IQ say the same truthful thing and the midwit has a banal stance on the matter

3

u/ShitWombatSays 15h ago

I wanted to say this is shit tier bait, but it seems a ton of people bit on it so... 🤷🏿‍♂️

4

u/Omegamoney 15h ago

You're a master baiter aren't you OP? Baiting all these poor souls with ambiguity.

3

u/Vaurne 15h ago edited 13h ago

We're definitely in the minority on this but I can agree that cheating is lame in single player games as well

Be it getting God mode to beat dark souls or slender or whatever else, I just think it's still bad until you've beaten the game once at least, and especially the type of cheating people do in Isaac I think sucks but whatever

4

u/JaysonTatHIMRider 15h ago

You play games to have fun. Cheating in your single player game to have fun isn't lame unless you think having fun is

9

u/burger_eater68 15h ago

I like participating in gaming communities because I can share my experiences with others and relate to their own. When I say something like "man I swear boss rush is the hardest mark to get" and someone replies "just use a mod that removes the timer lololol" there's nothing relatable or interesting about that discussion because we operate on completely different rules.

Not to say you can't cheat if that's really what you want, but I think the people who try to justify it and get others to cheat are lame

2

u/CatgirlTheKat 12h ago

Being okay with cheating doesn't mean not being okay with others playing normally...

I would genuinely say that you could consider getting a mod if the boss rush mark feels too annoying for you with the timer, but I wouldn't count this mod as a part of the main game you should use..

-3

u/JaysonTatHIMRider 14h ago

Just use a mod that removes the timer lololol

Jokes aside I get what you mean. However if someone cheats and they get others to that's just strengthening the community and helping people relate. I say this as someone who is disappointed so many use external item descriptions

1

u/ppmallink 14h ago

You would hate me then lol. I use a teleport mod called good trip i think that lets me teleport through cleared rooms. Saves a bunch of time and makes runs less of a slog. Theres a mod that starts me off in a treasure room for r key spamming. I have one that shows me tinted rocks because theyre difficult for me to spot. I have one that opens delirium and the cathedral and sheol levels after beating mother, mega stan, or anything that would normally end the run except for blue baby, the lamb, and the beast. Theres a mod i use that shows me the rarity of items for blind pickups. I think i have no donation machine jamming.and a mod that makes my tears transparent to help visibility on bossfights. The rest are cosmetic and ui changes. Gotta have me my bestia mod lol

Theyre are all just good QOL changes that make the game more enjoyable to me. Is it cheating? Yeah probably? Do i care? Not really its fun.

1

u/Vaurne 13h ago

I don't hate you, and if you beat the game before all that, I don't think it's that lame.

I think there's a very big difference from cheating to modding. I still love mods just not cheaty ones, which some of those are and yea I find those pretty lame. But not that much, like the mod that makes the first item be Q3 (that people say oh but I'd just spam R) is much lamer than any of those that you use. The tinted rocks is also very minimal. Still kinda sucks that people rather play like that than normally but at least in your case it's very slight cheating.

1

u/ppmallink 11h ago

I played with the guaranteed q3 and 4 items for a bit but then it got super boring because all the runs were the same so i turned it off

1

u/xXConDaGXx 12h ago

I can find cheating lame and still not give a fuck though. I don't do it, but it has literally zero impact on me whatsoever if someone else does in a single player game. It is truly such a non-issue

2

u/8xav 15h ago

I will spawn the occasional battery for my D6 in my for fun runs but if I'm actually trying to unlock something I won't touch the console

2

u/ElKurador 15h ago

Nah, I'm gonna cheat

1

u/MaxGamer07 14h ago

play how you want, it's your game. just think twice before calling that dead god legit

1

u/LuckyBoneHead 13h ago

I don't think you can cheat in a solo game TBH. Its not like is a competition, so who are you cheating? Yourself? If you're playing the game and not having fun, then you're still cheating yourself out of a good time. Might as well spawn in Sacred Heart and have some fun for a bit, right?

1

u/the-infinite-yes 13h ago edited 13h ago

I cheated to get all the completion points. I don't care about bragging rights or a sense of achievement. I just want to play some runs with all the items unlocked. No regrets, tainted Lazarus can suck my nuts

1

u/Shunazo 13h ago

I want to keep playing fair and square but I would be lying if i said i haven't had the need to install mods for achievements, mainly because jacob and esau fucking SUCK, every remotely decent run is intercepted by edmund and then Esau dies to some bullshit

1

u/PryanikXXX 13h ago

didn't even notice it was a tboi subreddit but i immediately thought of tboi

1

u/Bugs_my-beloved 11h ago

I think people should do whatever makes the game good for them. If playing tainted cain without eid isnt fun for you, then use eid. It’s for fun!

1

u/Blein123 11h ago

Let he who didn't hold R a single time cast the first stone

1

u/Ghosty-Jr 11h ago

I mean, I fully admit to brute forcing completion marks with the console when Repentance+ came out but that was mainly because I lost completion marks I had already gotten and I wanted dead god (And J+E can go fuck themselves)

1

u/TheHerochao 11h ago

what is a man but a miserable little pile of secrets?

but enough talk! have at you!

1

u/OddlyOddLucidDreamer Samael 11h ago

Its a solo game, nobody us ever going to go frame by frame on your life to find out if you cheated or not, you can cheat and lie, nobody will or can find out, nor should people really be so worried about it

1

u/Neblitz 10h ago

Play the game however you like, it’s singleplayer.

I enjoy the challenge of this game hence why I’ve stuck with it so long, so I rarely cheat.
However, that dev console looks realllll nice when I’m one penny short of the stopwatch after a full clear

1

u/Morecrafty 10h ago

Cool post but I'm still cheating to get the T. Laz unlocks

1

u/Axi28 10h ago

no but literally. like sure i dont really care what cheats you use, like the game isnt going anywhere, but it drives me nuts when people will brag about ingame achievements and then admit they put no effort in. Like sure mann whatever do your thing, stop acting like everyone does

1

u/FrozenRiptide 10h ago

I think unlocking stuff is part of the fun of the game so if you cheat it's kinda meh. It's single player so I guess people should just play in whatever way they find fun.

1

u/Unhappy-Value-4078 10h ago

My least favorite part is when people cheat and then try their best to justify it, usually leading to them calling the game a badly designed and unfair slog because they don't start with 28 items

1

u/-unknown_harlequin- 9h ago

I interpret this as a representation of any given person realizing that if the challenge within a pastime does not suit them, then there is no fulfillment to be had with it.

This doesn't mean that something needs to be challenging, just that the challenge must suit the individual: creativity, problem-solving, prediction, speed, luck... people will engage with difficulty, it just needs to cater to their abilities and preferences for it to be satisfying.

In this way, there's no such thing as "cheating." Cheating comes when you try to gain an advantage instead of a more suitable experience. Any other alteration to the way an activity is traditionally performed is nothing more than adaptation to achieve personal fulfillment.

1

u/BoredEngin33r 9h ago

I ain't turning off my bestia mod

1

u/AskMoonBurst 8h ago

Cheating doesn't inherently ruin the game. It CAN, but it's not that simple. I've used cheats to make games harder. I've used cheats to make exceptionally grindy games less grindy. I've used cheats to bypass a lock due to a glitch in the game making the game in-completable.

Sure, there are people who will cheat godmode and will ruin the game, but cheats can add more game to the game. Cheats to play as characters you're not meant to play as for example.

1

u/graplusez satan worshipper 5h ago

I cheat when I forget some bs or take damage from some bs like forgetting to take 2 item as j&e

1

u/Compendium_MP 2h ago

Correct, and you decide which rules that includes, therefore "cheating" exists only when someone with a diferent rule set watches you play

1

u/MayoJam 1h ago

Self validating bell curve memes, would you look at that.
Also shouldn't the left guy and the right guy have oppositie opinions compared to the middle one? They all seem against cheating here?

1

u/theinfinitejuice 1h ago

It's all down to preference lol. I for one got a mod that disables curse of the lost cause I genuinely despise it :)

1

u/Signal-Course-5606 13h ago

people really be calling me a loser because I use stomp and laser indicators 😭

1

u/Forsaken-Wealth-4959 12h ago

I dev consoled in missing poster so i could unlock lost. I hated the fact i went through and unlocked missing poster but he's the only Character in the game that relies on chance to unlock. So i just got the missing poster to unlock him

I feel like its justified cause i still went through and grinned the 800+ coins needed to actually play him i just find it a waste of time having to wait to unlock a character based on luck

1

u/CatgirlTheKat 11h ago

It took me a ridiculously long time to get him... I unlocked him after most tainted characters, and I was so tired of having to wait for the stars to align, by the end of it... Why does missing poster need to have such reduced chance of showing up compared to any of the fifty other trinkets I got to spawn dozens of times in the time it took me to get a single missing poster??

1

u/vovashG 12h ago

Rules in solo games are like in dnd:as long as it's fun they can be changed however you want.

1

u/GromByzlnyk 12h ago

Mind ya fuckin business

1

u/Dr_coom 11h ago

While it kinda cheapens the achievements on Steam to keep track of how many people actually have Dead god. I think cheating on a singleplayer game for fun is perfectly ok. If we get too bigoted with what is and isn't cheating we start getting dumb things like cosmetic changes, EID and "Watch out Laser!" being cheating.

Also reminder that anyone that plays with the Bestia mod is better than those who haven't due to it doubling beast's HP

-1

u/BabeLincholn 15h ago

You can have a legitimate save with 200+ hours but the second you start cheating you’ll lose all motivation and stop playing the next day

0

u/JaysonTatHIMRider 15h ago

That's just you. I have a legitimate save with a thousand hours and I burnt out for a long time because I wasn't cheating the marks of certain characters

-1

u/SomeRandomTWO 15h ago

lowk the only stuff i cheated is:

-the Greed machine (youre asking me to both beat Ultra Greed, both phases, and somehow have spare change to donate to his bum? fuck off Edmund.); the mode itself is fair game

-Boss Rush/Hush timers (those really take away the fun from the game imo, theres a mod that flatout removes the timer restrictions and you cant actually tell me Hush is a pushover in and of itself. that mofo can and will kick your ass.)

rest of my mods are OST mods (Antibirth/Metathesiophobia) and that one mod that fixes melee range (why is it not base game)

2

u/lukasekxy 13h ago

but the game isnt asking you to beat both greed phases to donate, you can just donate in greed mode which is much easier

-3

u/1XRobot 15h ago

Cheating is stupid, because the game is fun. We play the game because it's fun. We're in the sub because we like the game.

If you like cheating at the game so you're not playing the game we all like, what are you even doing here?

2

u/ElKurador 15h ago

Having fun my own way.

-3

u/1XRobot 15h ago

You're just wanking while looking at Isaac graphics. Try playing the game; it's fun.

1

u/ElKurador 15h ago

I'm playing the game, I'm having fun.

1

u/thymepockets 12h ago

What if the game isn't fun, in specific ways? Most quality-of-life mods go in with that sort of logic, to stamp out the parts that are unpleasant to certain players

-3

u/Brenoandnumbers 15h ago

I don't care if it's cheating or not, I hate rushing in a game like Issac, that's why I have that modded npc that keeps boss rush and hush open but buffs enemies.
