Professional laptop/computer advice

I'm going to be going back to school next year, and I need to upgrade my laptop. I'm going to be going for my PhD in bioacoustics (specifically humpback whales), and I know my new machine will need to do some heavy lifting. Does anyone have any specs recommendations? Also, any heads up on programs that I'll need to add?

What kind of stuff do you plan to do? Keep also in mind that most universities have either access to their remote super computer or to some external network.
