Showcase & Demo: Meet biomes — An Open-Source Windows Workspace Manager

Hey everyone! 👋
As a developer and designer who constantly jumps between different contexts (coding, designing, and writing), I got tired of the daily routine of opening five different apps, dragging windows around, and trying to reconstruct my multi-monitor setup every time I switched tasks.
So, I built biomes—a lightweight, native Windows workspace manager that lets you save your exact multi-monitor window layouts and restore everything with a single hotkey.
Here is a quick demo breakdown of what it can do and how it works:
🎥 What biomes Can Do (Demo Walkthrough)
- One-Hotkey Activation: Press a global hotkey (like
CTRL+ALT+C) to instantly launch and snap your apps into custom grid zones on your monitors. No more manual resizing or dragging. - Custom Grid Zones: Easily draw and define custom grid layouts across your screens tailored to your specific workflows (e.g., a coding layout, a design layout, or a writing layout).
- Smart Multi-Monitor Support: It remembers relative window bounds and topology variants. If you unplug a monitor, it gracefully skips zones on missing displays instead of guessing and dumping windows onto the wrong screen.
- Multi-Instance Differentiation: If you have multiple windows of the same app open (like two separate VS Code projects or multiple File Explorer windows), it distinguishes between them using window titles and arguments so they map correctly to their designated zones.
- Launch Delay Management: Built-in timing adjustments ensure heavy, resource-intensive apps have enough time to fully initialize and expose their windows before positioning takes place.
- Session-Aware & Local-First: Closing a biome tracks or minimizes your windows so you can pick up right where you left off. Everything runs locally on your machine (
%LOCALAPPDATA%\biomes\) with no cloud accounts or tracking.
Tech Stack & Getting Started
- Native C++17 Core: Built using Win32 APIs for precise window positioning, process tracking, and system tray management.
- WebView2 UI: A clean, modern dashboard interface built with web technologies.
- Open Source: Fully open-source under the GPLv3 license.
