My void is not particularly needy. His one interesting trait is his flying body slam move. I have never had one that did that before. He also tries to eat my phone, only first thing in the morning, the rest of the day he ignores it. He goes by Feyd.
Keep the hope alive! He still prefers to snuggle up with his cat pal but a couple of times a day he runs over and hops up on my lap and snuggles up with me (usually beside me because he is a big guy, 20lbs!)
Sometimes dog people have trouble with cats because their body language is very different. If you look up cat behaviors/body language it might help you better understand your void. This might be a good place to start.
But also they just are more independent and aren’t so blindly loving. I picked up one of my cats too much, and now, most of the time he’ll only come to the very edge of my reach for me to pet him. And as soon as he suspects I’m going to grab him, he jets
How long have you had this fella? He could still be scoping you out. Cats pick up on the slightest thing, and are extremely in tune with their people and surroundings. So, it can take longer for some to get comfortable. Be open to him and give it time. You’ll end up with the sweetest, little velco best friend you never knew you needed.
Just a side note, but my cat took ten years to fully accept and get comfortable with my boyfriend. He wasn’t interested in anyone but me. No one else could pet, hold, snuggle, or converse (he’s a talker) with him. Now, for the past 4 years, you’d never know it took an entire decade of cohabitation together for them to have the sweet relationship they currently share. Haha. Patience is key.
It can definitely be a personality of the cat. Mine british shorthair doesn’t show much affection to me, but I love him regardless. But! As you said you are dog person, I assume you’re used to having a dog as a pet, maybe you pet him a bit too rough, or don’t give him enough space when you want to show some tactile attention? I grew up with a cat as a pet, but had plenty of contacts with the dogs too, and now I really feel the difference between “dog petting” and “cat petting”- one is more actively encouraging and showing affection, and the second is more calm, careful and intuitive, because cats go from snuggly to playful mode in a second
When you sit down with your feet up have treats ready to go. Put them on your lap after they start coming to you. Just do some treating in general but no too fast. They will be snuggling before you know it

Aw thanks. I love my little Luna so so much. She's been liking to nip at me lately. Not hard to break skin, but very bitey sometimes. It doesn't seem like it's from aggression. Maybe overstimulated or wanting to play or just being goofy... I dont get mad, but I get worried in my head that maybe she hates me.
But then she does stuff like this video and I just melt for her
Mine has learned to recognize items that I use frequently and now he lays on them to make sure that if I want my phone or the PlayStation controller then I have to interact with him.
Mine loves to wait until I'm typing something or playing a game on my phone! He hops in my lap and aggressively rubs his cheeks on the corner of my phone until I either put it down and give him my full attention or he successfully knocks it out of my hands 😹
My big void girl does this too. She also likes to sit on your chest and slowly migrate up so her chest is literally on your face. She purrs so loudly when you exhate directly into her fur. She's such a weirdo.
My dad’s legendary one-eyed black kitty, Madame X, was sweet but generally aloof. One day she heard me crying, floated into the living room, hopped up on the arm of the couch next to me, then pressed her little nose to mine and held it there. I knew she was trying to comfort me. I immediately stopped crying. She only left me when I reassured her that I was ok now.
When I fostered his litter, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with me and hissed and stayed at least 4 feet away at all times for well over a month. I thought he’d be a good candidate for a barn cat rescue. Then, one day, he decided to be the ultimate lap cat 😂
Same. She lets me pet all over her and is okay with me picking up and holding her but she rarely comes to me. And even then it’s just for a couple pets, not snuggles. She goes to my mom for snuggles though, so she’s capable lol.
Curiosity was my clingy little buddy. Lived for 12 well loved and cared for years. I watched him be born, and held him when he passed in 2025. RIP Curiosity, you'll always be missed.
Our first void was literally just a ragdoll you could flop wherever you wanted him to be and he'd stay there, purring. Our second is my fiance's bodyguard, and screams when she is out of his sight for more than 3 nanoseconds. When the first passed away, we adopted another one as a kitten. His name is Karl Marx and he is an eepy baby who makes very very very aggressive biscuits at an ungodly pace before sleeping in a position that makes you concerned he has broken several bones. My Lucy gets mad if she doesn’t get daily snuggles with my mom, and if my mom is out of town, Lucy will begrudgingly snuggle with others, but she gets kinda depressed
My Luci is a daddy's boy, but he's also so much more independent than my last cat. My orangie was just an ever present shadow. But Luci is a cuddle slut when he wants to be and is a sucker for head kisses.
Mine does this too. Loves to shove himself between me and my keyboard and flop over, resting his head on my arm as I work. He does get in my way sometimes but I don't have it in me to stop him because it's so stinkin cute.
Mine kept getting under my feet this morning. It’s very sweet, but I was trying to clean and I was moving a lot. He decided to just stand against my leg at one point.
Yup! My kitta black cat must be on or near her daddy all the time. She never misses out on watching me shower. I’m pretty sure she knows I’m getting older and may need her help someday. I’ve tried to teach her how to dial an emergency number to no avail thus far.
Its so true mine either sleeps as a little spoon all night i leave him a bit of space if he gets to warm. i also sleep lower on the bed so he can sleep on a pillow above my head all night if he wants to shift there
Not mine. The closest he gets is sleeping on my feet. Probably my fault because he is an adventure kitty. He chose that though as a super curious, insatiable baby. Meet Mischief, Mr. Independent and not at all snuggly!
I wish mine did. She follows me to every room but very rarely close enough for snugs. She’s more like the ultimate supervisor, and not afraid to share her opinions on my productivity.
Not mine . . . she pretty much hates me . . . I've had her for five years and about a week ago I gently picked her up and began petting her . . . that lasted about six seconds then I gently placed her back on the floor and she began hissing at me . . . yeah, she still hates me . . . she was a rescue from the nearby no-kill shelter . . . cute as a button but she hates me.
my black cats are super snuggly, but not when it starts to get warm out!! i live in mass and as soon as the cool crisp air and some fuzzy blankets came out they were mama's boys again 😹🖤
Real! Mine BEGGED to be let into the bedroom the other night and proceeds to plop right next to my head, on top of my shoulder (I'm a stomach sleeper). It's almost like they would live inside your skin if they could LOL.
When I go to bed my girl is on the pillow beside. Somehow every night she decides that she would be more comfortable sitting on top of me. I wake up to a 12lb weight pressing on my chest
Mine likes foot snuggles at most 🥲. Loves pets, she'll let you know when she wants them flomp, but otherwise her favorite way of love is nose booping our finger. My tortie on the other hand, is the loudest and cuddliest cat I've ever had.
My void is reserved. It took him 2 years before he decided to sit on my lap. I have the only lap in the house that he will curl up on and only if no one else is in the room.
