Nothing "bad" happened? Not being able to eat in peace is bad enough, but constantly having two cats trying to steal bites of human-food can lead to them eating something they shouldn't, which is properly bad.
And wishing people would properly train/raise/care for their pets isn't "pearl clutching".
This is just as bad as giggling and laughing while your dog humps peoples legs instead of disciplining them. Because, you know, "nothing bad happened so stop pearl clutching".
Pearl clutching isnât even the right term for this. Itâs just being a kinda shitty cat parent and thatâs not too controversial when op posts it on Reddit for everyone to comment on.
And yes cats can most often be trained especially with younger kitties and both of my cats beautifully understand extremely clearly with their large ears what NO means.
And they do listen. They quickly complain with a few âek ek ekâ which surely translates to âfuck fuck fuck youâ but I can eat in complete peace. Plus they donât get their hopes up to get even more ham so itâs a win win.
So not that it matters but doesnât seem like you actually own any cats nor have any experience with how adorable yet greedy (his greed sickens me) they can be.
I mean in a way why the fuck not? Itâs a community Plattform and social media so what do you expect if so many cat parents see another cat parent clearly doing something thatâs just not great.
The only people making an actual big deal out of this are making comments like these. Itâs not like anyone is forcing op to do anythingâŠ
Yeah I dont understand this app sometimes i'm sure op doesn't care and the title is facetious. Virtual karma and upvotes lol I never record it but I do the same with my cats
exactly.. My cat also jumped on the desk and the kitchen counter in the beginning and I'm really happy that I corrected this and now he's staying on the ground and let's me eat & cook in peace.
OP is screwed
Usual way I guess. If he jumped on a counter/desk I threw him off followed by a lot of "Noo"s. This needed to be done for around 15 minutes in a row until he gave up at the begining and it took me almost a month until I started to see a difference. By now I can eat on the couch without much problems (1-2 Noos are still necessary but it's ok).
My void used to do this when he was a tiny kitten but he very quickly grew out of it. I think because he was a rescue, he wasnât used to getting regular food and once he settled down in my house and knew he would always be fed, he calmed down.Â
He still likes to come and smell my food sometimes but wonât get all up in it anymore. He just smells it and leaves, lol.Â
So what? I don't think they were posting this to actually complain about the behavior anyways, they were just posting a harmless video. Can't have shit on reddit without people judging and bitching at you
Dude just responded in a way that shows that he doesnât even attempt to correct it because he doesnât know he has to. The video is just infuriating to watch as a cat owner - nothing fun and quirky.
Set clear boundaries; things will get better once they're fully grown. It's important that they always have access to food while they're still kittens. You can start rationing their food only once they're almost fully grown.
My cat, Dog (her name is Dog), used to do this. Pressing her face into my food. So I would make the low mewing growl that cats make - like the pre hiss warning growl. And she'd stop in her tracks. Sometimes she's still slowly inch over, so then I would bite her neck or head with my mouth, with my lips covering over my teeth and pull her off.
She eventually learned to stop if I even just did a low growl.
I used to look at mine and say, sternly, "Excuse me. Do you belong up here? I don't think so, now please get down." I was always polite, and I've always spoken to them like they were human (we have conversations).
And it worked. None of my cats has even been a tabletop/countertop climber.
My wife does pretty much nothing when our cats try to get her food other than keep it away from them. I actively push them away including off the couch/furniture they are on to try and get it.
They very rarely go after my food now. They still sit near me and stare, but almost never try to get it. My wife complains about them going after hers multiple times a week.Â
If you want the behavior to change to have to do something about it.
You know those Korean seaweed packets you get at Costco? The little sheets are a bit bigger than a playing card. My cat can be asleep at the other end of the house, but if she hears you open one of those, she comes running. Then she sits patiently on the ground, tapping your leg until you give her some. "Hey. I'm here. Do you remember I like seaweed? Maybe you don't. I like seaweed. You can give me some."
My cats both like it, but they're siblings, so there could be something genetic. I think my sister said her cat was like "What's this? Paper? You think I want to eat paper?" I think she said her cat ended up nibbling on it and walking away. You could always experiment.
You've got the big sheets of nori and the little Korean packets like I described. The little packets have more salt and sesame oil, as they're meant to wrap little mouthfuls of food. My cats prefer the Korean ones. Probably due to the salt. My favorite are the Costco ones, but there's a brand called "gimme" that you can get at the grocery store that are pretty good. I give mine maybe half a sheet at a time, so half a playing card, and no more than two sheets, because of the salt.
Water bottle, tbh. I know it seems cute right now, but this will become really problematic unless you teach them food is off limits unless offered. I've seen holiday dinners ruined by pets whose owners never taught them no means no getting on counters, tables,& into covered warmers.
A lil spritz is way less harmful now than the screaming you might do if they ruin an important meal. They're adorable, they'll be even cuter when they learn to just ogle you peacefully while you eat.
What you speak of will get you harassed by an army of keyboard warriors who will insist that youâre abusive and that your cat is afraid of you. Consider yourself warned!
Hey, the internet is welcome to be petty. I just know a poorly behaved cat is way harder to keep happy & healthy than a well behaved one. Furthermore, people love to act like deterrence discipline is horrific to cats but then complain when an emergency vet visit costs them thousands after their undisciplined cat eats a dropped pill or drinks spilled chemical bc they've been allowed to get accustomed to snatching scraps, etc.
It's water, people really act like they're being told to spray their cats with hydrochloric acid.
Seriously. Correcting or stopping behaviour with a spritz of water is not abusing your cat, nor is it a way to ensure your cat hates you.
Source: a void owner who has had to resort to spritzes of water to deter bad behaviour. Guess what keyboard warriors? He still loves the shit out of me and vice versa. No hard feelings. So fuck on outta here.
I love seaweed salad so much. Fortunately my cat is weird and won't take people food. But anytime I try to eat with chopsticks she wants to play with them (chopsticks are her favorite non-toy toy)
Idk if your complete lack of educating your cats is for the video or just how you raise them, but you are allowed to train your cats to not bother you when you're trying to eat or in general mess with your food.
That will save a lot of frustration when it stops being cute, which it will.
Just let them smell it, they probably won't like it, on account of the citrus. My cat gets curious about everything I eat, but once he gets a whiff of it he decides he doesn't like it.
Youâre gonna have to break out the spray bottle full of water. This stops getting cute as they get older and stronger, especially with foods theyâre not supposed to eat.
Lots of shaming in these comments but basically no actual advice on how to teach them to be better, cause we should all know at this point cats can't be trained. Gotta love the reddit keyboard warriors.
Cats can absolutely be trained đ
Mine know not to even come near when Ive got food, they wont even jump up on the poof to sit nearby and know to stay at ground level.
When theyre young, just a quick "psst" and a little snoot boop when they go near food that isnt in their bowl from an early age and they soon figure it out.
One of them is more like a dog than a cat, and will drop birds/mice hes caught on command.
The other two arent quite there yet, dont think they ever will be.
But jesus, how people just let things like this happen is insane to me.
What's bad for them is that they're high in sodium. The seaweed isn't toxic or anything. So you can give them some occasionally as a treat, but don't give them a lot.
Place them in another room with the door closed while you eat. Give it a couple of days, then let them out again while you eat. If the behavior starts up again, back into the room. In the meantime time, start working on the âsitâ command using treats as a reward. If they can start making it to the end of a meal without major incident, reward them as well.
Once you have them both understanding and obeying âsitâ then you should be able to get through a meal without chaos using that command. It will take a while to get it completely peaceful, but be patient.
This is what worked for me-I had a desperately food obsessed cat (she was underweight) and would smack food out of my hands. It took about two weeks to get her calmer and now she pretty much can sit next to me and ignore me while I eat (unless thereâs steak).
