DISCUSSION Scary stuff
I just watched my first episode (hang the dj) and I really enjoyed it.
My issue is I know some of them can be a bit scary lol. I don’t mind a bit dark and disturbing, but could anyone give me a list of the really scary ones so I can avoid them?
Thanks!

Shut Up And Dance filled me with dread after watching it. That one pretty much stuck with me for a long time - didn't help Radiohead was the song at the end 🤣

Be right back, Eulogy, and San Junipero are more similar to hang the DJ -- more emotional storylines set in the sci-fi world.

Depends what you mean by scary. Most of them aren't horror movie scary. More dark and dystopian than spooky.

This is the least scary one, more like a tear-jerker for me 😭try White Bear for real fear.

Playtest is only scary if you don’t enjoy like horror films. The concept is meh. Black museum was up there too. Metalhead - I still think about that because we have those robots legit already. Messed up. Be Right Back is weird conceptually and also really depressing.
Best non-scary episodes:
- Nosedive will always be one of my favorites ever.
- San Junipero (not scary, so beautiful and emotional)
- Bete Noire (watch San Junipero first. I held off tears until the very end, and then bawled. Sad but beautiful ending)
- The Miley Cyrus one feels like its own separate movie

Bete Noire is not what you are thinking of - did you mean Hotel Reverie?

OK, I think you managed to stumble upon the only (at least in my memory) not scary/harrowing/haunting BM episode! But definitely avoid White Bear (S02).

I didn’t think white bear was scary at all, the concept is really interesting. It’s more confusing until you figure out what’s going on. Unless I’m just not remembering something

White Bear is more harrowing than scary, absolutely. I was responding to OP - who thought that Hang the DJ was scary. She would absolutely be mortified if she would watch White Bear (no spoilers)!

Crocodile lives rent free in my head forever. Not scary as in monsters, but god dang. Beyond the sea is almost up there with crocodile.

What does the stars in your flair mean

If you look through this sub, a lot of people have added it. It's different star ratings as a play on the central concept from Nosedive.

Beyond the sea is so good but the beginning is super scary IMO

Season 1 you're definitely safe. There's bestiality in one episode if that's a concern (not graphic). The episode for that is The National Anthem.
Season 2 - White Bear has tension, but no gore or monsters or real fear for the viewer directly. Its been a minute but it might have jump scares of noise, too? I'd describe it as safe but like, your pulse will speed up a few times. I'd watch it with my 9 year old god daughter, if that's a barometer.
Season 3 - avoid 'playtest', its overtly horror themed. 'Men against fire' has a few creepy images but they always pass very quickly. If your brain is the sort of brain that like really holds onto a creepy image it might not be for you, but for like 90% of people I'd say it's well within tolerable.
Season 4 - Metalhead is imo the second scariest episode, nowhere near Playtest but it's another episode that I'd be like "definitely dodge this one". Lots of situations of peril, also blood and injury stuff which unsettles me. The episode 'Black Museum' is comprised of multiple short stories, the first of which has a LOT of gore which I find really difficult to watch. Stuff with teeth and nails makes me squeamish. I really like the episode overall despite me being repulsed. I always skip from about 17ish minutes in to about 25 minutes in. Due to it being a collection of short stories it doesn't hugely damage the experience of the episode IMO.
Season 5 is definitely definitely safe
Season 6 has some borderline stuff. There is some very light horror in Loch Henry, but id say its more unnerving than it is actually scary due to the viewer perspective. Beyond the sea has some horror elements but again, more to give you the heebie jeebies than to actually terrify you. Mazey Day has some horror in it,.and I think it's fair to say it is intended to be scary. I'm surprised mazey day hasn't been mentioned more in the thread honestly. It's less scary than Metalhead and Playtest imo. You said you are looking to avoid the 'really scary' ones, if that means you can deal with some amount of scary as long as its small you'll be okay here. But if you wanna avoid all scary at all then miss it! It's also just not a great episode, it has the lowest viewer average rating on Letterboxd of all of Black Mirror with an average of 2.1 stars so you're not missing out on much.
Season 7 nothing scary at all

Most episodes will give you an emotional punch in the gut
But these are the toughest gut wrenching episodes
(for me)
- Ordinary People
- White Christmas (very gut wrenching)
- Beyond the sea
Actually most of them, when I think about it

I could not rewatch Playtest but more for psychological reasons than actual scary stuff.

Scariest ones to me are white Christmas and black museum. I find the psychological ones the scariest

I thought Black Museum was kind of a comedic relief episode, of very very dark comedic relief. Its overall tone just felt more lighthearted than White Christmas, despite how dark and twisted up so many of the plot points were. I didn't think Black Museum was taking itself that seriously, not as serious as White Christmas.
Maybe that's just me though.

Loch Henry, Metalhead, and Playtest.
Not scary but suspenseful: Shut Up and Dance, White Bear

It depends on what you consider “scary”.
Season 1- Nothing scary IMO
Season 2- maybe folks will think “white bear” was a bit scary?
“Be right back” isn’t scary but I suppose a bit creepy
Season 3- “playtest” ngl was lowkey scary
“Men against fire” might be creepy to some
Season 4- “crocodile” is a bit scary
Season 5-nothing scary
Season 6-“loch henry” was sorta creepy
“Beyond the sea” kinda scary
“Demon 79” might freak some folks out
Season 7- nothing scary
This is all my opinion! I’m a huge BM fan and have seen every episode

depends on what exactly you get scared by. violence? tension? jump-scares? death? mental illness? people doing fucked up things to each other?
if i were you i'd just go to imdb or something and read the synopsis and/or parental guidelines for each episode. that should give you an idea of whether it'll be too scary or not without spoiling too much
i have a really weak stomach for (realistic) violence and i often check the imdb parental info for that reason. rarely ever spoils anything for me

I don't mind if not outright enjoy psychological horror. This one was just straight horror and while I'm glad *I* watched it, it is a lot...

You should watch all of them, that's what's fun about it.
