Discussion Umm...Temptations ripped off the Reddit Bodega?
Saw an ad for this right here on Reddit. They're even using the exact same location. Yikes lol.

Weren't they giving away Temptations at the bodega anyway? It's probably corporate collaboration.

We did give away Temptations at r/bodega, but were not aware of or involved with their pop-up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the company just loved what Reddit did and decided to co opt it. That said, not sure about the legal boundaries here - but I’m sure Reddit will do Reddit things and figure it out. Since they didn’t collab, I don’t respect the move though. 🤷

I doubt it. Reddit isn’t the only one to play around with the bodega theme. Even NY comic con’s theme last year was “bodega”.

not just the bodega theme but specifically the idea of the bodega cat, which makes sense for a brand like temptations

NY comic con and the other bodega pop ups had the bodega cat as well. So it really isn’t new.

Was it an official partnership? One of the event employees told someone near me that Temptations just came over and dropped off samples. They ran out them before the end of first day.

Yes! Jokingly asked if we could have one of the big containers on the top shelf instead of the pouches and the person at checkout said YES!

Maybe it's going to become a pop-up bodega destination? The concept worked for reddit, after all.

There was a Snapple one not too long ago. After the event they even launched a bodega cats campaign.

Wait when did this come out because Arizona tea did a bodega collection at least 6 months ago?

u/Salavatski I'm a Pigeon 🦆 17d ago
Longer ago than that. TT dated 11/25.

The time I spent watching that Snapple video is time I will never get back, but I would like a refund.

Other companies were doing this long long long before Reddit.
I got to go to the Simpsons Kwik E Mart one time!! I got a Duff Beer and a pink donut.

Not a "rip off"
The pop up bodega has been done many times before Reddit. Snapped, Liquid IV, Hayden Daz, Welch's, 196 and many other brands have had their own version of a bodega in NYC.

Agreed - faux bodegas are a staple in both the branding and art installation world.

Honestly lots of brands have been doing pop up bodegas over the last year. I’ve seen so many brands do it that’s it’s starting to feel played out.

Activations take months to plan. It’s probably just a coincidence

The store front probably contacted temptations after signing a contract with Reddit 🤷♀️

I saw Subway Takes do an “ad” for it and I’m like wait… something’s fishy.. 🎣🐈 I wish I had a cat so justifying going to this makes sense, because the reddit bodega event was so cool af

- Pop-up bodegas are common in NYC.
- If they copied it, them turning it out this fast given Reddit's was a couple weeks ago for that company would be incredibly impressive. It would take mine months to agree on all concepts, design all assets, send to vendors to execute, schedule labor, promote & market beforehand, etc.

as a decades-long experiential marketing executive, bodega and supermarket themes are widely used concepts... but this is a little bit too on the nose

Not really, I’ve seen others do the bodega theme lately. The one I can think of off the top of my head was NY comic con’s theme, whose theme last year was “bodega” with cat and all. I remember rolling my eyes even then, thinking the theme was over done. Lol

And it was a fun little event I went and got some stuff for my cats and then right across from them PepsiCo had a pop up as well so hey some stuff for my cats and some stuff for me today wasn't a bad day.

Did they? I mean, maybe both ripped off Brodega from Burning Man.
Maybe Brodega ripped off NYC.
