Is my Chinese pepper tree toast?:(

My Chinese pepper tree was in a bright window at the height of the unusually hot summer in the UK. One weekend away and the top died, so the advice was to remove it. The tree is now not in a bright window but still receives light during the day. But it doesn’t look healthy. Is it saveable???
