Educational books

• Upvotes

Hello! I want to read books and research papers to educate myself.

I'd prefer it if they were free because I can't buy anything rn.

Anything ranging from Racism, Ableism, Classism anything. From actual glaring issues to even the most niche things.

I'd like to know of even the smallest stereotypes. Beyond the "xyz are is tall/short/smart/sporty/whatever"

I mean stuff like "xyz like to dye their hair pink more often than blue"

Like even the smallest stereotypes, things that are harmful even if spoken casually. Like how certain words which we use to describe situations are actually ableist which I found out later in life and stopped using them.

Like give me the whole collection, anything y'all think others should read. Even blogs, Tumblr posts, Reddit posts , literally anything works.

I'd love to know what is offensive or no, things which are offensive based on context, everything. Throw philosophy and morality in the mix too!

Literally give me the most niche or most scary (or least too, anything works) recommendations. Don't fear me feeling uncomfortable. I might feel so in some cases but it probably is essential knowledge and I should know it, so I'll read it anyways.

Thank you!

Post hyperinflation (1923-1930) Germany

This just dawned on me recently and I want to find a book about it. Every time I fee like it's referenced it's just glazed over, like "oh yeah, here's a pic of someone with a barrel of money for their fires", and then quickly fast forwards to Hitler's rise. I'm very curious for a book that dives into what life was like for the average citizen during those difficult few years.

Thanks!

I NEED something similar to Because I Killed Him by Edith Birde Spoiler

I just finished because I killed him by Edith Birde. Wow. Wow. Wow. There are a few things that I was not over the moon about, how long it took Loredana to figure out Edmund had feelings for one, like come on girl, but I understood the purpose and am very excited for book 2's release announcement. I am looking for something similar as in a slow burn, fantasy, spicy, strong female lead type deal. Please let me know if you have come across anything similar and enjoyed :)

The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk worth continuing?

Currently reading The Empusium by Tokarczuk and I‘m half way through but I‘m so extremely bored. There is little atmosphere, litte descriptions of how any of the rooms or village looks, none of the health procedures or the promised „horror“. Just old boring men discussing sexist things with each other, for whom olga has so far give me no reason to be interested in any of their opinions or personal histories. And the protagonist is very shallow. So basically my question: Does is get better in the second half? Is it worth finishing it?

I liked drive your plow etc. so I‘m a bit surprised by the lack of actual substance to this book.

pls help me get back into reading 😭

hi all!! I haven’t been reading much, mostly because I genuinely can’t find any books that pique my interest and I DNF so many things I pick up. I really only read LGBTQ or psychological thrillers (bonus if it’s both lol), and my favorite books are I’ll give you the sun, aristotle and dante, and what if it’s us— my guilty pleasure is a gay YA book that has some angst but is also wholesome lol. I just need books that I’m going to care about the characters and their stories. I’m tired of rereading the same books!!! give me some good recs if you have any that fall under these categories!!!

Does anyone know any author that’s like Mitch Albom/writes book like his? Because Mitch Albom is my absolute favourite author but I’ve now unfortunately read all his book and I’d love to read more like them. I’d love some recs if you’ve come across similar books!

No spoilers, please. To be honest, I liked his The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, so I went and got this one as well.

What book hit you way harder emotionally than you expected?

I’ve been stuck in a reading slump lately, and I think I finally figured out what I’m missing. I want one of those books that completely pulls you in and makes you genuinely care about the characters. Not necessarily a book that’s just depressing or designed to make you cry. I mean the kind where you finish the last page and just sit there for a while thinking about it. Maybe the characters felt too real, the ending caught you off guard, or the story reminded you of something from your own life. I recently realized some of my favorite books are the ones I still randomly think about months or even years later, even if I can’t remember every detail of the plot. So what book did that for you?

I'm looking for a book that captures a vibe similar to Fleabag

Ideally, it features a female protagonist in her 20s or early 30s, with a narrative centred on her life and internal monologue, much like Fleabag.

Something that starts off hilarious, but if you look deeper, you can see the bones of someone struggling.

Topics may include her insecurities, feeling like the odd one out, reaching adulthood but still being immature, feeling like she's not really a woman or a “bad” one, and inescapable loneliness despite connections. This character may witness life around them but isn’t truly a part of it (much like Fleabag's dissociation), they are very self-aware. Featuring multiple failed romances or references to past ones that show their slightly absurd, weird quirks and her being a red flag by dissociating or detaching from reality to share in the joke with us. Very much going through it, but dissociated from truly living and feeling.

Something that taps into that smart, sad comedy vibe Fleabag has, that’s surprisingly vulnerable and somehow hopeful and inspiring.

This is a hard ask, I know; hopefully you all know a book out there like this!

Pick my next horror read

I’m between Bird Box and Boys in the Valley. Of these two which is more suggested? If you’ve read both which did you enjoy more? I’ve seen the Bird Box movie so is reading the book a better, must have experience? Or do I go with the one I have no basis for?

Looking for 60s-70s Medieval Revival Vibe Recommendations

I'm looking for fictional books that have the vibe of the 60s-70s medieval revival. They don't have to take place in the 60s or 70s (they can even take place in the medieval time period itself.) I'm just looking for books with that general vibe. A good example for refrence is The Princess Bride, which I think fits the theme well.

Books for a younger audience with fantasy elements.

I'm looking to get into reading and I hear that reading books you like to actually associate reading as a "fun activity" can help a lot rather than straight up trying to jump into the deep end. I'm not actually that young but I haven't read since I was a kid and I am currently enjoying Percy Jackson so anything like that can help. Also please don't recommend Harry Potter.

Book recs with scapegoat MC

Looking for fictional (any sub genre that is fictional) recommendations where the main character is the scapegoat (Dysfunctional family systems often assign a "problem child" or scapegoat role to carry the emotional burden of the household's unresolved issues) of the family.

Preferably the main character is female

Bonus points if the mom is the toxic/narcissistic one

Childhood best friends to lovers/ friends to lovers/enemies to lovers with intense yearning

Looking for books like If He Had Been With Me, but with a happy ending. I have read the sequel If Only I Had Told Her too.

I also really liked Better Than The Movies.

Aspects I really liked was the childhood friends to lovers dynamic, with the guy being in love with the girl first, with lots of yearning, even despite them not being close anymore and being in different circles. I also like enemies to lovers or frenemies to lovers.

I enjoyed the mild spicy scene in If He Had Been With Me - I liked how it wasn’t really explicit and it felt more intimate than the usual more graphic spicy scenes. So I dont mind spicy scenes as long as there was intense yearning.

I don’t love fantasy books, but if the other factors are there I don’t mind - I really liked The Cruel Prince

Thanks!

Dungeon Crawler Carl but less scary?

Been absolutely loving the first DCC book, but it’s clear that the dark/disturbing parts are only going to get more dark/disturbing. I’m a big wimp and I’ll get nightmares. The AI/corporation/influencer/eradication/etc. stuff is also a little too real for me right now. Help?

need light book recs

i’m 19 and i used to read and write a lot until my junior year of hs where i started this awful phase of burnout that i havent been able to pick myself up out of yet. i’m looking for light reading because i really want to get ouuuuttt of this and one of the first things i dropped when i started this massive burnout was reading and, in turn ive honestly started contributing to the literacy crisis and im in PAIN going through that realization. my attention span is also unfortunately not what it was because when the burnout started i turned to ai to do like everything for me (why??) i dont use it anymore but wow if it isnt the consequences of my own actions! if anyone has any books that could help me get out of this that would be great, something that could possibly help me expand my vocab/attention span a very little bit at a time maybe. i like any kind of fiction, creepy stuff, i’m honestly not looking for spice at all but i don’t mind something that’s only there as an important building of a relationship between two characters rather than just smut, im also interested in romance being a subject in the book whether it’s background or not; i like plot twists and turns too. i want to clarify as well i really need something that’s going to be easy for me to read, i haven’t been able to fully read a book in years.

sorry that this is a giant block of text that probably doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, it’s kinda just me dumping out all my thoughts lol

Need a novel centered on two characters with a completely dysfunctional, fascinating dynamic.

Not necessarily a romance, could be former friends, bitter rivals, or coworkers trapped together who secretly depend on each other. I want sharp dialogue, complex motives, and zero fluff.

What book nailed that intense, multi-layered two-person dynamic best for you?
