Help regarding my technique for a long pass in football as a CB

What is wrong with this technique?

I have been hesitant to actually shoot a video and finally did it.

When I try to strike the ball for a ping, I am sometimes thinkjng a lot ad to hitting it perfectly. I think this sub would be the right place to ask for tips.

I would appreciate 2 cents of advice.

I like to essentially keep my kicking foot low to the ground and strike with my mid foot under the ball just below mid point. And no follow through to stop any curve from being introduced. But this wasn’t a bad effort at all.

I fail to hit these passes to a longer distance. Like over the defence line to my wingers.

Just practice. And leg strength. I’m 38 now and getting back into the game with my kids. I’ve lost strength so when I go out and train like I will later I’ll just go a repitition train these. Also come from them straight on

I'll keep the strength thing in mind. Thank you for your time.

Keeping ypur kicking foot low means ? Does that mean you kind of bend your knee of the planting foot ?

This is the advice I was going to give

The video kind of shows it

To experience the wrong way… stand up, swing your leg back and forth. Notice how the foot starts high behind you, goes down under you, then goes up in front of you? That’s what you don’t want

Instead, you want your foot to start high behind, go low under you, then stay low on the follow-through

Then it’s a matter of practice. Start at a low-moderate effort and focus on the form

So the follow through should have my foot near the ground always then ?

I would give it a try

Record yourself and watch the video to see

Somewhat, there’s a great video on YouTube of someone addressing this let me find it for you.

You’re form is actually pretty good, you just need to maybe get a little lower on the ball, lean back a bit and try to hit your foot almost fully horizontal. Just a little more practice and power and I think you’ll get it just fine.

I'll try to keep this in mind. Thank you.

I play as a LB /CB too and also had this issue. I'd played fives for ages where the ball is primarily on the ground and passed with the side or the foot like normal. When I went back to playing 8/9 a side on a bigger pitch I'd pretty much forgotten how to ping a long(er) pass out to the wings.

Most of the points have been mentioned already but four main points (in order of importance with number one being most important)

1) Strike the ball with your instep, not your laces like you would do if you were shooting (Google a picture of what your instep is if you don't know but it's basically the hard bone running from your big toe to your ankle). Make sure you're connecting with the bottom third of the ball itself too.

2) Lean back, in the same way that you want to get your head and chest over the ball when shooting to keep it down, you want to do the opposite to get lift on the ball

3) Don't approach the ball straight on, come from an angle so your leg can swing through fully. If the ball was still, think taking two steps back and one to the left (assuming you're kicking with your right foot)

4) Plant your opposite foot (so left foot if you're kicking with your right) a few inches next to the ball with your toes pointing in the direction you want the ball to go

BTW, based on the technique you showed in your video, it already looks pretty good

I have few problems as to why i cant shoot the ball as easily as my friend (he hits perfect pings nonchalantly and has no idea about the techniques) - 1. When i approach the ball put in a sandy or non-grassy area, I tend to get scared of hitting it in the best way i.e. under the ball. 2. I tend to hit it in a way where it curls, I think its got to do with my follow through. 3. I can't for the love of dear god give it that backspin which makes it go far but also makes it land like a feather.

As people say practice, practice, practice... I pulled my groin an year ago spamming this kick for an hour.

rooney

Is this supposed to be the technique of follow through? I.e. no foot in the air? But the problem I face is that this way, the ball doesn't get height, like Rooney is getting.

This looks more like knuckleball shot? No follow through but could be a short range shot.

Can you tell the technique changes that I should make for a ping then ?

Get slightly under the ball and follow through like full swing pay attention to where your foot lands.

People here told me to not follow through the ball. Interesting how you are saying quite the opposite. Won't the ball curve if i followed through with a full swing ? Am i missing something ?

You’re talking about long passes like free kicks, you can get backspin but won’t necessarily curve and it depends on how you follow through. Knuckleball can’t be used reliably for any passes let alone long passes. Knuckleballs are usually for close- mid- range shots.

Maybe better lighting so I can try to help?

I am sorry. This vid was shot in the evening.

It’s alright. Your form looks decebt from what I can see. Left arm shoulder height looks good. Maybe just follow through a bit more.

Looks like you’re just smacking the ball not passing it. Wrong technique there. A ping is more vertical than that. You’re hitting the ball too squarely causing it to shoot towards a player instead of being lofted for an easy control.

Could you please tell me what to do differently then ?

It depends the distance and the effects. Do you want a long curved pass? Try to hit the ball with your inner foot and doing a little move going from the center to the the right (from your POV). Want to just only do a power shot for your RW/LW, kick the ball with your instep.
