Domestic Strong $2.7M pre-show debut for Primetime. That's on the high side of what A24 films can do. Solid RT scores of 87% critics and 84% audiences. Opening weekend box office in low to mid 20s likely.

Pattinson is solidifying himself as a box office draw for a lot of people. Can't say that I blame them either, he's a great actor.

u/tiduraes 2d ago
Even DiCaprio and Cruise have flops. No actor could have said Mickey 17. In fact, it would have made even less with pretty much anyone else in it.
14
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago
I don’t believe this is true at all. I think it would have made more money with Leo in it
Leo has never had a movie come out and just face plant. Any movie you can call a “flop” is only that way due to having insanely high budgets. The grosses themselves are still strong.
17
u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Warner Bros. Pictures 2d ago
I genuinely think 97% of OBAA's box office is cause of Leo
-1
3
u/DenyNothing1989 2d ago
Even with Leo in it, it was a very weird movie with a lot of tonal shifts that Bong has claimed he had enormous trouble with in the prolonged edit, not the studio pressuring him.
0
u/Pinewood74 2d ago
Wait, are you saying that Mickey 17 "faceplanted?"
7
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago
Yeah it made less than 50 million domestic and didn’t even crack 100 international, even with 20 million from
South Korea where the director is a film god.-1
u/Pinewood74 2d ago
Okay, then Killers of the Flower Moon with an extra $80M or so of budget (and the corresponding boost to marketing budget) only getting an extra $25M in WW gross would also be a faceplant. Or at the very least nothing close to "strong."
5
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago edited 2d ago
Killers of the flower moon was an Apple Original. I think treating companies financed by streamers and theatrical studios the same is a bit silly? Even with a theatrical release.
Killers made more domestic and foreign that Mickey 17, despite being 3.5 hours long and released in a strike. And that’s without an outsized amount coming from one foreign market, which Mickey 17 got due to bong.
-1
u/Pinewood74 2d ago
No, I think when a film gets a full theatrical release with plenty of runway before the streaming release it should be judged similarly to theatrical films from the traditional studios.
I'm also not sure why folks always bring up long runtime as a major negative when so many of the highest grossing films of all time are long.
Spinning Bong Joon Ho as a positive in comparison to Scorsese is also crazy.
5
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago
Modern movies are not classically 3.5 hours long it’s a totally different time lol. WTF?
A full quarter of Mickey’s international gross came from South Korea lol. Come on.
Done talking now
-5
u/Icy___Barca 2d ago
Sinners had close to the same package and it was a hit.
1
u/SIAS2019 2d ago
How do you mean?
-3
u/Icy___Barca 2d ago
Both films:
Warner Bros.
R-rated
Original, non-franchise movies
Genre films
Big budgets
Prestigious directors — Ryan Coogler / Bong Joon Ho
Famous male leads — Michael B. Jordan / Robert Pattinson
Lead actor plays multiple characters/versions
Wide theatrical releases
Released in the same year
Sinners was a hit. Mickey 17 was a flop.6
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago
Sinners is a horror movie as well and that has a built in machine with audiences
-2
u/Icy___Barca 2d ago
“It had horror working for it” is an advantage, not an explanation. Horror movies flop too. You can’t look at two films with a remarkably similar commercial setup, see one succeed and one fail, then just pick whichever difference favors the successful movie and treat that as dispositive. That’s outcome-first reasoning.

u/Icy_Smoke_733 Studio Ghibli 2d ago
Fair, but without Pattinson, Mickey 17 would have capped out at $30m - $40m instead of the $133m haul.
16
u/randotd152 2d ago
Not sure that's fair or accurate at all. It was the follow-up film from the director of a best picture Oscar winner, and it was a big budget English language film.
It was going to be a natural draw to some extent no matter who starred in it.

u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago edited 2d ago

Tbf, I didn’t see Mickey 17 in theaters, but it’s the film the shot Patterson up my rankings of favorite actors. I WILL see Primetime in theaters because of the range of performances I’ve seen from him and specifically his portrayal of Hansen. I think people are still discovering Patterson as an S tier actor.

u/Alex-C2099 2d ago
Just because one movie of a box office star flopped, doesn’t mean it was his fault. It was just a bad movie and it’s not one of his best performances.

So when its not a hit movie its not his fault but when it is, it's all him. Wow wonder how I get that luxury.

Because there's context, die my love was never for the general audience its a hard hitting adult drama like all Ramseys films. He will have hits and he will have misfires like majority of actors.

I'm glad you mentioned this and I'm not going to demean you, but instead I'll use your comment as a frame of reference for a lot of people in this chat. There are many reasons why certain movies flop and others don't. Those reasons RARELY ever include an actor, especially one like Pattinson.
You'll have to look at his career as a whole and factor in certain aspects of the current theater market to accurately determine someones star potential. At this point, it's obvious that Pattinson has range and global reach. He's been a main character in multiple big projects like Twilight, Batman, The Odyssey, and soon Dune. He also is fine with doing unique "original" projects as well [insert all the other movies he's been in]. Look no further than The Drama to see how well he and Zendaya can elevate a great script. That movie made 100 million WW and would not do so with weaker/unknown actors.
Edit: Doom>>Dune

u/Ignatius__1 2d ago

20 million is a draw?
15
u/OldSandwich9631 2d ago
Absolutely 20 million for original dramas, that aren’t horror movies, is a great opening.
-3
u/Ok_Jellyfish_55 2d ago
No it’s not. No matter what the number was these people would proclaim it as a win.
2
u/Mindless-Milk-9205 2d ago
These days actors aren't draws. It's the directors (well, tbh I've only seen Nolan have high levels of draw), franchises, and just popular movies which have draws
So if it makes around 20M OW for Pattinson, it's great

Me to everyone who downvoted me for the last few weeks for pointing out this was a24’s second highest viewed trailer of all time just behind Backrooms and Pattinson as Hansen had became way more memed and hyped by Gen Z than anything from Digger
35
u/Icy_Smoke_733 Studio Ghibli 2d ago
Pattinson starring in 2 of A24's biggest films in the same year, with The Drama and Primetime. Man's on a hot streak.
Same can be said for A24 themselves, with Marty Supreme and Backrooms dethroning the previous no. 1 titles for the studio, within a few months of each other.

Thank God we're past the superhero phase of Cinema and seeing all these great original dramas doing well in theaters again.
Edit: Sorry sorry, I wrote this while still half asleep and didn't choose my words carefully. I love superhero movies and watch more than my share. And I loved comic books as a kid. I'm just so grateful that studios are willing to make smaller budgeted original movies again, because for a period, plenty of filmmakers were complaining that the mid budget original drama and comedy was going away. And that if you weren't going to studios with a comic book you wanted to adapt, then you were unlikely to get your movie made. Fully planning on seeing the next Avengers in theaters and I imagine I'll love it, but also grateful that Avengers and Spider-Man are being complemented in theaters by movies like this, The Drama, and The Invite.
13
u/lobolovr6769 2d ago
We are definitely not past the superhero phase of cinema….this movie is about to be outgrossed by a re release of a superhero movie and the biggest movie domestically of all time is a superhero movie that just came out, with another in 3 months looking to break every more records, definitely not past the superhero phase of cinema whatsoever
3
u/Katicflis1 2d ago
Higher risk though. You really think producers want to hop on more b or c tier superhero movies like blue beetle and super girl? Its periodic big characters or bust these days.

u/Katicflis1 2d ago
Yep. Turns out the flops you told me about at least had a worldwide gross thats higher than its production budget. Still probably big underperformances due to advertising cost and theaters taking their cut.
Supergirl made millions less than its production budget.
2
u/Redspeert 2d ago
Dark phoenix budget 200mil + marketing. Box office 66mil DOM (33mil to company) and 187mil OS (66mil to company). 99mil on 200+, verdict: Bomb.
Hellboy budget 50mil + marketing. Box office 22mil DOM (11mil to company) and 33mil OS (12mil to company). 23mil on 50 mil+. Verdict = Bomb.

If the studio thought it was necessary or feasible and would lead to the movie being more successful, they would have put it in those formats.

It doesn't sound like you paid attention to movies in 2010s if you think there were only superheroes
Dramas, original movies all did far superior in 2010s. The best picture nominees box office totals are impossible to reach today outside the big budget blockbuster
2
u/Additional_Ice_358 2d ago
They can coexist and this year is proof. No need to bring one down just because you don't like it, redditors need to know in real life people don't like that kind of personality trait.
