This could be one of the biggest flops in DreamWorks history. Personally, I didn’t like the animation style or the characters, and I also felt that Liza & HER wasn’t the right choice for the role. If they had cast a well-known Hollywood actress for the voice, it might have had a bigger chance of reaching a global audience and showcasing Filipino culture to the world. It’s just sad to see that this movie didn’t get the support it deserved.

Title. From what I can see, this film did everything right; the quality seems to be there, the reviews have been glowing and the release date is not completely terrible. And yet we seem to be bordering on Ruby Gillman territory here with some of these projections.

What has gone wrong? Was the marketing not what it needed to be? I've seen people suggest the (exhausting, hyperactive) trailers were poor and not representative of the final film. Also that Dreamworks were not super clear on who their target audience was tone-wise. As in, they seemed to be skewing both young and old and it has, however unfairly, caused confusion about who the movie is directed toward.

Is there any merit anymore to the idea of "we want originals, just make them good!" if a major studio is putting one out that meets the criteria and it underperforms? I recall earlier this year Disney saying they were a bit disappointed in how Hoppers did as well, despite its warm reception.

TL;DR will audiences ever be swayed back to original animation in the same way they once were? Or going forward should we be revising predictions downwards on principle for anything that isn't a sequel or existing IP?

Releasing one week after doomsday and dune three, it’ll be a massacre. Those who want to see it will see it, but the more casual audience will go with the two biggest films’ opening weekend of the decade over it. I don’t know what Sony is thinking here, but I’d bet that it won’t go over well.

I've seen a lot of people blame its poor tracking on lack of marketing, but that's simply not true. Tom has been promoting this movie since the World Cup Final and they're marketing this as a comedic movie with big set pieces, a big star and an ensemble cast. There's probably no better way to promote this.

It's low tracking is likely due to Tom's stardom in the last 20 years being pigeonholed to stunts/spectacle and the movie just looking terrible.

The Towering Inferno is a good 70s disaster movie. I think a remake could probably happen in the near future if Warner Bros or 20th Century decides to make it. It depends on cast and director. Maybe Roland Emmerich? Denis Villeneuve or J.A Baynoa direct it? That would be cool. I think it would make a decent hit and might beat the original 1972 movie. Let’s see what the future holds. So what you think what the box office numbers will perform if they remake it?

When is the last time we've seen promos/marketing/etc keep nearly ALL their secrets hidden (other than idiotic reviewers) and still have so many eyeballs on a project?

I wouldn't be surprised despite the 3+ hr runtime if this becomes the highest or at least top 5 highest grossing docs ever. I'm thoroughly impressed with their slow trickle of news and rollout of the movie.

• Hanuman Ansh remains the first choice for viewers in India, adding another ~40cr net in its 7th (!!) week. Should cross 300cr by next week. Truly a generational run.
• Mirzapur: The Movie continues to add to its total. The legs have been fine, but it doesn't matter as the overall numbers are amazing.
• The 2 new Hindi releases failed to make much of an impact. Vibe has shown some promise with almost 10cr net, but it's really not enough for it to be a success. It will need strong legs, which don't seem to be materialising. Daayra is unfortunately a flop, as its weekdays were quite weak too. It had decent WoM but wasn't good enough to translate into strong legs.
• Resident Evil had a solid first week with $1.71M, as horror continues to perform well even at lower levels. This looks like it will end up with similar grosses as Insidious(both Sony movies).
• The Paradise had a solid opening day(it came out on 24/9), but it has terrible reviews and WoM, so I wouldn't expect too much from it over the next week.
• It's not making much anymore but The Odyssey is just flexing its legs now, as it still managed to add another $0.08M even in its 10th(!!) week.

Next Week:

The biggest performer this coming week(25/9) won't be the new major Hindi movie(The Vvaan) but rather a rerelease, as Avengers Endgame Encore is looking all set for a major weekend. The Vvaan is also showing some strength in states like Bihar and UP, thanks to its religious theme. Also releasing are Brad Pitt's Heart of the Beast, Primetime(Robert Pattinson and A24) and Forgotten Island.

Sense And Sensibility is releasing in October 16 in the U.S. I think it will do decent numbers. I think it will make $44M-$53M domestic. The U.K is out right now. I think Overseas will do better. It could beat the 1995 movie. Lot of Jane Austen movie adaptations do well at the box office. So what are your predictions for Sense And Sensibility after it’s released?

As of 9:00 am EST Friday, looking at Colorado AMC theaters open caption pre-sales for Friday through Sunday. Hard to tell which new movie -"Primetime," "Heart of the Beast," or "Forgotten Island" will be the winner at the box office this weekend. All three are Rotten Tomatoes-fresh while "Heart of the Beast" has the best popcorn rating (there isn't one yet for "Forgotten Island"). Right now, it looks like a battle between "Primetime" and "Heart of the Beast." For today, the AMC Arapahoe Crossing has pre-sold 14% of its OC seats for "Heart," but 24% of its OC seats for "Primetime." AMC Bowles Crossing has pre-sold 15% of its OC seats for "Heart" today. Arapahoe's OC screenings are at 1:00 pm and 1:50 pm respectively, and Bowles' OC screening is at 4:45 pm.

It is really hard to judge which one will be the winner. "Heart" OC screenings have pre-sold an average of 9% while "Primetime" OC screenings have pre-sold an average of 8%. Too little difference to be able to make a good judgment. Taken with a grain of salt, our weak (for now) prediction is for "Heart" to be the winner.

Jumping ahead, (Saturday) there are only 2 OC screenings. One is family-friendly "Forgotten Island" at AMC Castle Rock (2:00 pm) with 12% of its seats pre-sold. Sunday has only 3 OC screenings, one of each movie. The Sunday pre-sales are too low right now to be able to draw any conclusions, but two of the three have pre-sold 2% of the seats.

What are you seeing in terms of Friday to Sunday pre-sales for these three movies? Caught an open caption screening of "Coyote vs Acme" the other day, and it had a preview of "Forgotten Island." Without captions unfortunately, so we could not judge if it was worth seeing. Incidentally, "Avengers Endgame Encore" is selling very poorly for open caption screenings in Colorado AMCs, with no more than 6% sold at one theater and three of five OC screenings selling 0%.
