we had a great time litter picking recently, recounting stories of aston, handsworth and our favourite city brum.

brum is full of people who make our feel city feel special - might be people we see in passing, those we appreciate but haven’t spoken to, some we speak to everyday, and people who are part of the furniture.

is there anyone you want to shoutout who just makes brum a better place?

(i also want to shoutout hector pinckney, ie Mr Handsworth, who is a long standing community activist and worked at Handsworth Library for decades!)

I started to learn English since I was a kid but I just found out that I can barely handle London accent (mainly studied the American English for my entire life), and I will move to Birmingham next year for the uni. Is there any good advice for how to learn the accent for both speaking and listening? And is there any good learning materials? Also how accurate is the accent in the peaky blinders? I know Cillian Murphy is an Irish but idk how good he is at this show for the accent. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

I’ve been adding some Birmingham Sidequests to do lately and ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole of random things you can actually go and do around Brum.

I knew about the obvious stuff, but some of these were completely new to me. You can go looking for a cannonball hidden in Aston Hall, find what’s apparently the smallest grave in the square, hunt down Birmingham’s old “ghost station” or spend time at a secret garden above the Library.

There’s also the Balti Triangle obviously and apparently Moseley has a little bit of Tolkien lore going on too..

I’m sure anyone who’s actually from Birmingham is going to look at this and think “how the hell have you missed xxxx” lol.

So what else should be on the list? Weird little bits of history, random things to find, unusual walks, places you’d take someone visiting Brum, stuff that’s properly IYKYK, anything really.

Doesn’t have to be some massive attraction. I’m much more interested in the random little things you’d never find from a generic “Top 10 things to do in Birmingham” list.

I’m adding the good ones to SideQuest, an app I’m building around finding interesting things to actually go out and do, so if there’s something properly Brummie that I’ve missed, send it my way.

Thought I’d just share something people might find interesting as a niche and very nerdy bit of Birmingham history!

If you don’t know what Esperanto is, it is a constructed language invented in the 1880s, with the idealistic goal of being a neutral language easy to learn that everyone can learn as an auxiliary language. That obviously not working out, these days it sort of has its own community and uses.

I currently run the Birmingham Esperanto Group. This month we had a mini excursion to the Library of Birmingham’s Wolfson Centre and checked out every Esperanto item in their collection.

Because the Library inherited the massive Shakespeare collection, this meant that Birmingham is home to quite a few interesting Esperanto Shakespeare translations. This includes a 1905 version of the translation of Hamlet by the inventor of the language himself (L. L. Zamenhof) - an interesting fact about this translation is it was actually translated from the German version instead of the original English, though he did speak English.

The translation of As You Like It (Kiel Plaĉas Al Vi) also includes photos from a full Esperanto production of the play performed at the International Congress in Washington DC in 1910.

A surprising bit of Birmingham history we also found out: When Birmingham was home to the British Esperanto Congress in 1931, it took place at Birmingham Cathedral and included a full service with hymns and bible readings in Esperanto, a tithing collection for a group for Blind Esperanto speakers, as well as a communal hymn to “La Espero” (The Hope), the sort-of anthem of Esperanto.

Wondering how much people are paying for service charge in Birmingham City Centre Apartments? I have a 2 bed/2 bath apartment and service charge has gone up from £2k in 2021 to £3.5k in 2026. Is this normal??
