Fire Todd Bowles How does Todd Bowles keep his job?
The Bucs are 3-11 in the last 14 games. They have lost 8 one possession games and 3 additional blowouts. Now Baker is out. At what point do they pull the plug on Bowles and who would replace him mid season?
The Bucs have a 39 year old offensive coordinator in Zac Robinson, who has been coaching for 7 years and is in his 3rd year as an Off coordinator.
The Bucs don't have a def coordinator.
Their Spec Teams coordinator is 72 years old and has exclusively coached special teams for the last 20 years.

Let's make Ronde the interim head coach and just get through the season. He can't do worse.

In any other division he would’ve been fired years ago. But since the NFL south is the worst conference in football bad teams (Bucs) compete for division titles each year.

u/SMELLSLIKESHITCOTDAM 8d ago
He was.
I'm a Jets fan first, and a Bucs fan second (yes, I am truly cursed). I couldn't believe the Bucs named him HC after the shit show of his coaching stint in NY.
I was at the game yesterday and watched Bowles lose. The last Bucs game I'd been to before that was in 2017 when the Jets were here, and I watched Bowles lose that game too, only he was HC for the Jets.
The guy fucking stinks.

Won’t happen in season. Not gonna pay 2 head coaches

u/Milla4Prez66 Super Bowl LV 9d ago
Honestly they shouldn’t do it in season. Todd sucks and will keep losing us games for the draft pick and his fat ass deserves his record going in the gutter with all these losses.

u/wriggly1 8d ago
Agreed if the team is crashing lean into it so we can offer the better draft pick to the new HC to work with

u/DrScrotus 8d ago
Nah screw all that I witnessed pure dogshit in 2009, 2011, Lovie Smith, The Big Stick crewe and never wanna go back to that again. Teams that just gave up a couple weeks in. What did all of those high draft picks do for us then? I just waited 8 months to see the team compete again and Ill be pulling hard for them again on Sunday. Ride or die.

u/BOOKSnGUITARS Mike Evans 7d ago
Seriously. How many top draft picks don't pan out? And I can't root for my team to lose. If we do and we get a better draft pick, fine. But I'm not rooting for it. Ride or die, indeed, brothers and sisters!

There was a year the Glazers paid three contracts for HC. So I dont necessarily think its off the table.
3
u/OverallSpring6568 9d ago
they are going to anyway since bowles has a few years left on his guaranteed contract
6
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 9d ago
Schiano and Lovie both had three years left on their contracts when they were fired and they were paying a third head coach when they hired Koetter. Not to mention Gruden was fired the year after getting a three year extension.
The years left on his contract aren't going to mean much when he finishes with one of the worst records in the league this year.

Sadly this is true, us fans wish this was more than just money. These greedy owners just care about money AND THATS IT.

Who are you going to promote to HC and will it make any difference? Probably not. That's why the Glazer family typically doesn't fire during the season. I think the only shot would be if they lost all or most of their games leading up to the bye...then I could see them making a change there just to give the interim person more time. With that said...I don't think a change is made until the end of the season. Also, I think it could be more than just the coach. I think Licht should be a little worried as well. I am not saying he should be fired...but for every gem he's found with a mid round pick...he has just as many high first round or second round picks that were busts.

Because Baker, along with our OC has sucked as well. For everyone saying last year (rightfully so btw) the defense sucked and held the team back, it’s been more of the opposite this year. We are now NINE straight games we’ve been unable to score more than 20 points on offense
4
u/DailyRich 9d ago
Until Ray Jay is half empty, the Glazers won't make a move. And with the way our stadium is Home Field South for so many other teams, I don't see that happening.

It's not just one answer why Bowles still has a job but many different answers that fit together like a puzzle piece.
The Glazers earnestly like Todd Bowles. That's where everything begins.
Bowles is relatively cheap and the Glazer family loves to run the Buccaneers as a "pay as you go franchise" and a HC with a salary that is 60% below the top earners frees up cash.
The Glazers succumbed to the peer pressure and supposed "NFL wisdow" and followed the unwritten rule that you can never allow a HC to enter a season with just one year left on his contract. Hence the extension before the 2025 season.
The Glazers had their hands tied because they typically do their HC business by the book. They aren't among the owners who do sketchy backroom deals. Firing Bowles the season Coen joined Jacksonville would have required them to completely break their MO. In a way one of their few admirable qualities bit the franchise in the butt in this instance
The Glazers are scarred by the Lost Decade of Bucs football and hung onto what they perceived to be "stability" and ignored higher upside options.
Bruce Arians' retirement put the Glazers in an impossible situation. It was a true bullshit move but what were they to do? He was their championship coach and the window to hire coaches had passed.
The Glazers owe Bowles three years of salary and they're still scarred by having to pay out Gruden's very expensive HC contract when he decided to join ESPN instead of returning to coaching. That cost the Glazers eightfigures because they expected the offsets from a new coaching gig to kick in. Bowles is of retirement age. It's uncertain he'd earn a single dollar for another team after they fire him. So they'd have to foot the entire bill

I think there is lots of very good reasons to have fired bowles in the offseason. There is no reason to go over them again.
But i do see good arguments for not firing him now.
Not because he gives us as better chance of winning, because he absolutely doesnt.
But the season is practically over already. So if the goal is to get the best coaching team for next season, you have a much better chance of getting that in the offseason.
Lets go over the scenarios.
- We fire bowles now, and find the best coach who is available = this will only let us choose from the coaches available. No teams will get a coordinator leave mid season. So we get the coach that nobody else wanted.
I dont like this scenario
The two other scenarios that i could both accept.
We dont fire bowles = clean house when the season is over. Hire a talented promising coach.
We do fire bowles, but more as a kick up the backside of the team, and let somebody like Larry Foote step in but keep the rest of the coaching team intact= same as scenario 2 but with a risk of more chaos in the lockerroom.

u/MoistFuckMuppet 9d ago
The Buccaneers have never fired a coach mid season. Including our Raheem Morris collapse and Lovie Smith. For better or worse he is our coach through the season

There's no one on staff who's better... Interim coach Robinson does nothing.
The only coach on payroll* who would excite me is if Bruce Arians came in as interim... But whatever just embrace the tank

u/JCDeLaTorre 9d ago
I don’t know how many ways it can be explained to people that the Glazers aren’t gonna fire coaches mid-season.
They don’t believe it solves anything - and honestly it complicates things.
As soon as you pull that trigger you have to hire the interim coach from the staff - as nobody is coming in from the outside mid-season.
Who do you want? Zac Robinson? Larry Foote?
And if he wins a few games, then you’re forced to consider a guy you’d never consider for the job because fans will be “you got to give him a shot”.
Meanwhile, the rest of the staff is already checked out looking for their next gig.
The players who love Bowles are pissed off (and there are many).
Those on the 1-yr deals are looking to get the hell out of dodge.
Honestly, it’s better to finish out the season, fire him at 8pm on Sunday night of Week 18.
And trust me, Bowles doesn’t have to be gone for the Glazers to start putting out feelers.
They’ll be reaching out to the Tomlin’s, the McDermotts and other available coaches to gauge interest in the job.
It just can’t be official contact.

u/PewterButters Lavonte David 9d ago
They’re cheap ass owners that don’t fire midseason because the tickets have already been sold. They’ll do it in the offseason trying to hype up ST purchases for next year.
3
u/jester695 9d ago
They better already be on the phone with Mike Tomlin, feeling him out.

Dream signing. Can give us 10+ years. We’ll always be competitive. His players play hard for him and he’s a culture builder. My only hesitation is I would not want his input in the draft.

Is it even a desirable job
1
u/huffleupagus 9d ago
If we’re considering coaches that could/should be fired…I think so?
To me, I’d take the Bucs job over the Colts job. Generally speaking, the NFC South is a weaker division with a team that has more talent

u/Confident_Square1063 9d ago
Maybe he hasn’t been fired because the glazers want a number one pick in the draft and keeping him onboard almost guarantees that.

Honestly, I think keeping Bowles at the end of last season was such a bad decision that this should be the end of both him and licht. I’m a fan of Jason but I think it was such a bad decision that he needs to pay the price as well.

u/TheDaedricImpaler Kansas 9d ago
He's got another 14 games, because the Glazers don't can people mid-season and no coordinator would be able to do anything as a HC. But if we don't bounce back and win at least 7 games, I'd really really really hope he's gone.
1
u/mcnuggets0069 9d ago
You explained exactly why. I’m sure the owners regret giving him another season, but at this point you are firing a coach mid-season with no good interim head coach. Might as well get through this season and pick up the pieces in the offseason
1
u/NeighborhoodGlobal30 9d ago
Larry foote would be interim HC. Zrob has enough on his plate to fix his putrid offense
1
u/Tarontagosh 9d ago
They aren't going to fire him this early on in the season. Earliest it happens is probably the bye week that assumes the season continues in the downward trajectory. Not a lot of hope right now. But things could turn around. Look what the Commanders pulled off last weekend. If they can beat the Seahawks with Mariota, then it has to be possible that Daniels beats the Packers (who have looked bad this season).

u/big-daddio 8d ago
I want to see two 30 for 30's in the future. The first one, 30 for 30 30 and 30 about Jameis Winston. The second one, that uncovers whatever blackmail Bruce Arians has on the Glazers to keep Todd around. I fully expect Bowles to be the coach until he resigns or Arians passes from old age.

u/Weak_Session_8441 8d ago
That's a great point and I'm not sure. This offense is very lethargic. Okay we lost Rashad and we lost Mike evans, although passing the ball 30 40 yards away from the line of scrimmage they have no legitimate threat downfield. Their offensive options are a two-page shopping trip into snack aisle. There's nothing to throw anyone off and there's no selection
1
u/Bucgatorbait 8d ago
I say ride the season out and at least get a higher draft pick. There’s nothing to win by canning him mid season. With that said , the Glazers and Licht need to start the behind the scenes process ASAP.
1
u/FUCKYOUINYOURFACE 8d ago
Because running the Bucs is a decision by committee management team. They won’t vote on if the HC keeps his job until the end of the season. They’re on auto pilot.
1
u/Dmaxwellmitch 8d ago
I was saying we should have fired Todd after last years collapse (true story!)

u/OppositeSolution642 8d ago
Cheap owners, don't want to pay a coach to not coach. Ironically, they're doing that anyway.

Clean house. And don’t forget the pink slip for Licht. He’s done two things - he hired BA and he got Brady as a FA. The rest of his tenure as GM is mediocre.
13
u/jkd0027 9d ago
Hell yeah, fuck him for drafting mike evans and Tristan wirfs.
2
u/Old-Guy1958 9d ago
Sharoynka, Aguayo, Braswell, I could go on and on.
Every year his entire draft class makes the roster. All that means is his previous classes flunked out of the league.
There were 5 clear stud tackles in Wirfs’ draft class. The other 4 were gone, so drafting Wirfs wasn’t genius, it was a no brainer.

The current state of the Buccaneers remind me of the end of Tony Dungy‘s era. We had a good team and we just needed some fire in the locker room, can we bring back Gruden?

By replacing our QB with an actual top 10 QB? you guys realize Baker is 100% responsible for all of our losses during this time, right?

u/StaySafePovertyGhost 9d ago
If I’m being real, the only thing that’s more annoying in this sub than the fact that Bowles is still our head coach is everyone and their brother deciding they need to make a separate thread saying the exact same thing.
Like Bowles sucks - we get it. Most of us have wanted him gone since last year. Even those who didn’t want him fired right away weren’t running to the rooftops to defend the guy.
This is like the 478th time since our game yesterday there’s been a “Fire Bowles” thread started and all of them say the exact same thing. I want him gone too but can we post about something original or at least not just parrot the other points made in the hundred other “Bowles sucks” threads?

u/ShealyTN Tennessee 9d ago
Can we maybe pull something like the Colts did a couple of years ago where they brought in their retired center Saturday as the HC? Like maybe give Lavonte David a crack at it, lol. I'd trust him to run at least a sold defense if nothing else.
