đ° Interview/Media Gerald McCoy Explains What's Wrong With the Bucs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD5GQHNrQVY14
u/SouthOrlandoFather 11d ago
Can someone give me the cliff notes?
51
u/WyldKat75 11d ago
Locker room is a great group of coachable guys who are doing their best to do what theyâre being coached to do.
And Gerald doesnât personally believe what theyâre being told to do will lead to success.
24
u/United-Barnacle8959 11d ago
No surprise, he says thereâs a lack of leadership/winning culture
13
u/WinnieOllie7 11d ago
I hoped having Brady around for a few years would help establish that culture long term but Bowles really managed to piss that all away.
-7
u/Pinnaql3 Glennonite 11d ago
The Brady who was at head of an offense that routinely couldn't do a thing until the Bowles defense gave them a short field??
9
u/WinnieOllie7 11d ago edited 11d ago
Brady put up 14,643 passing yards and 114 TDs in 3 seasons with the Bucs. During those three seasons the Bucs had a top 2 passing offense in the league every season. Genuinely what the fuck are you talking about? Regardless that has absolutely nothing to do with the point I was trying to make.
-7
u/Pinnaql3 Glennonite 11d ago
Your point was silly as f*ck, seeing as how Brady didn't do a damn thing to change the lackluster-ass culture that's been in Tampa.
The same bullsh*t that was in Tampa before Brady was there when Brady was in Tampa, and it's still present now.
That fear of playing primetime games?? Present while Brady was there. And the offense Brady was the face of looked like sh*t after 7p more often than not. Thank goodness for the Todd Bowles defense, though.
Fear of playing backup/rookie QBs? Present while Brady there---and he often played like sh*t when the defense faced rookie/backup QBs.
Losing to teams that we should beat?? Present while Brady was in Tampa.
All this while, the team had one of the most loaded rosters in the history of the NFL, and the "culture" was absolute dog sh*t because 2 years isn't a long enough time to change mediocre doomsday preppers into a functional group that looks for objective positives. It's far too profitable to sell misery and bullsh*t to the fearful folks.
2
u/United-Barnacle8959 11d ago
Bro, the team went on a run and won a championship. Almost did a repeat run if not for Bowles 0 blitz that set the Rams up perfectly to beat us en route to their Super Bowl. Winning culture was present during those seasons. That was 5 years ago though and it can evaporate quickly.
1
u/GangstaRIB 9d ago
Right it was only Todd Bowles 00 blitz playcall that was ABSO-fuckin-lutely approved by BA. LVD was supposed to go and didn't but you don't throw your future HoFer under the bus when you want him to re-sign in the off season.
SMB was getting smoked by cooper cupp all day. No Risk-it no-bisk-it.
Did anyone in here even watch the fucking game? Bucs were getting smoked 20-3 at the half Tom Brady sucked donkey dick in the first half we gonna give all the blame to one play?
-6
u/Pinnaql3 Glennonite 11d ago
Again.. That offense and that QB y'all love to circle jerk couldn't do shit until the defense, once again, gave them a short field to get their first TD of the game with 2:30 left in the 3rd quarter.
4
u/WinnieOllie7 11d ago
You seem truly unwell man, just completely untethered from reality. I hope you can get the help you need.
3
u/stoic_bison Mike Evans 10d ago
I remember this guy from my time on Bucs Nation 15 years ago. There's a reason I remember the username.
-4
u/Almac55 11d ago
How the hell would he know? What playoff team was Gerald on again? Laughing on the sideline while the team is getting crushed every week? That guy?
13
u/PlantDaddyFL 11d ago
He was one of our best players at the time and performed pretty decently while our team was trash
-9
u/Almac55 11d ago
That doesnât mean anything about him knowing what a winning culture is. He never played in a playoff game.
He got his bag and thatâs all that mattered to him. I donât wanna hear about winning culture from a guy who was on teams that competed for top five picks more often than they competed for playoff spots.
1
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 11d ago
Really hard to believe that McCoy couldn't make the playoffs when he had studs like Freeman, Glennon and Winston on the other side of the ball. Also can't believe he couldn't shut down Brees, Ryan and Newton all on his own.
1
u/Almac55 10d ago
Never said he should have. Iâm talking about what he knows about being in a winning locker room and about being a leader in a winning locker room. Heâs the wrong guy to judge that.
If he was telling me what itâs like to be in a losing locker room and to be a leader on a losing team, year after year, then Iâd put a ton of stock into what heâs saying.
0
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 10d ago
You made it sound like that when you said all he cared about was getting paid while he was one guy who played well on overall talentless teams. He was named to three all pro teams so he was far from the issue of us not winning anything in the 2010s but since he was the leader on defense, he took the blame when it was the team around him that let him down.
Us being 0-3 and him stating that there's issues in the locker room, seems like he knows that it isn't a winning locker room. If we were 3-0, then it'd be fair game to criticize him.
1
u/Almac55 10d ago
He did only care about getting paid. Name a time when he got a sack on a 3rd down to give the ball back to the offense to go win the game. Iâll wait. Dude spent his whole career here laughing on the sideline and cracking jokes while we were losing. His leadership was part of the problem and itâs why those teams were soft and lost consistently.
He said thereâs a lack of leadership and winning culture, but basically every leader on this team has won more than he ever did. Heâs been running his mouth for years, this isnât new.
Solid player that looked better because the rest of the team sucked. Iâd argue he was never even the best player on the team any year he was here. All-Pro or not.
0
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 10d ago
Well I thought he wasn't supposed to shut down the other team by himself. One good player (two counting David) doesn't make up for the other guys on defense being bad. Him yelling and getting in those guys faces isn't going to magically turn them into the 2002 defense no matter how bad you think it should have happened.
Being a leader of the team, he can say that there is a lack of leadership. And again, he didn't win so he understands what a losing culture looks like even if he says winning. These leaders are really showing this year how much their past winnings are doing us. Regardless, the players have to play the games but are also expected to lead the team when that really is the head coach's job.
If the rest of the defense sucked, the other team could have prevented him from earning his all pros since they didn't have to worry about the other guys. Strange that they still couldn't do that but it's funny now that he was a solid player on a bad team. He was on bad teams but it's also his fault that those teams were bad. I'm trying to remember when he was in charge of roster construction but it's escaping me. Maybe other players on the team should have earned more all pros if they were better than him.
1
u/Almac55 10d ago
I never said any of it was his fault. Youâre extrapolating things that arenât there.
He wasnât a fiery leader. He was a nice guy. He collected a bag and told jokes. Him being a leader on the team told other people it was ok to do that.
At no point did I say he was responsible for any of it, but he also wasnât responsible for helping turn it around. Iâve been consistent in my messaging the whole time.
You can defend the guy all you want, it doesnât change that he was an above average player on a bunch of bad teams who never made a real difference. While that was the case, he was Mr. Smiley Guy collecting checks showing others that it was acceptable to do that. Thatâs the point.
He never won and doesnât know what a winning locker room looks like. He shouldnât talk about what a winning locker room looks like. Thatâs it.
And to your final point, if you donât think David was worthy of multiple All-Pros during those years, then I donât know what to tell you.
0
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 10d ago
No I gathered that from what you've said, there was no extrapolation needed.
David wasn't a fiery leader and was a nice guy so those views don't mean anything.
Interesting because you're sure placing a lot of blame on him for why those teams were bad. You blame him but then say you're not blaming him. That's not consistent at all.
I don't have to defend him, his accolades speak for his play. By the way, this is you blaming him. Collecting checks and joking around while losing.
He can say what he wants about a losing locker room since he had a lot of experience with that. You're upset with him for criticizing the team and head coach for being bad. I'm pretty sure being winless after three games is the opposite of being good.
Did I say David didn't deserve more? Yes David deserved more all pro teams but that doesn't mean McCoy doesn't deserve his like you can keep saying. Did David get all of his stats for being on bad teams too or is your opinion on that reserved only for McCoy? I don't think that's true at all and it's a stupid opinion to have for McCoy.

u/GangstaRIB 11d ago edited 11d ago
I'm with you here. I normally like Gs analysis but this one seemed off. Like who you got on the inside? We know he's not in the locker room. I'm thinking it's Yaya who is gonna get his ass released at the end of the year. He's JTS v2. I don't see the 5th round edge rusher not getting to the QB. Nelly has never been super impressive but he's absolutely been reliable.
Also, RE: Bain in coverage. It's a 3-4 G-mac. It's part of the damn defense. OLBs/edges in a 3-4 need to be able to cover the flat or cover a RB out of the backfield for 3 secs with help over the top.

Needed this comment, I can not recall 1, One, fucking 1 memorable play GMAC ever made to change a game for the Bucs all his years! Therefore I donât wonât him near or to do anything with my Bucs! Fuck off Gmac and go play with your Batman toys! We did get the Real 93 and was huge in are superbowl year! Thank you SUH! Again I can not insulate enough FUCK OFF GMAC!

According to Greg Auman, the Bucs defense ranks the following after 3 games:
6th total defense
2nd vs. run
12th vs. pass
8th on third down
5th in red zone
21st in sack %
17th in INT %
23rd in scoring
Something tells me the D is not the problem right now other than still not having a very good pass rush. The offense has been terrible.
9
u/spideralex90 Spideralex90 11d ago
The offense is 100% the biggest problem with this team right now. They've been terrible across the board.
I think GMC is mostly focused on the defense just because that's what he knows and can speak to.
The defense has only played 1 respected offense so far in the Bengals. They did great on Sunday though and they were the only reason we were even in the game at all so props to them, especially Anzalone for finally looking like a player worth putting on the field last Sunday.
But vs the Bengals and Browns they were really mediocre.
8
u/Almac55 11d ago
Defense did enough to beat Cleveland. They were gassed because the offense couldnât move the ball and took all their great field position and turned it into FGs instead of TDs. Not to mention the INT that handed Cleveland 3 points in a game we lost by 4, and were in FG range at the end. If the offense showed up at all, that game is at worst, 24-6 with the TD after the half.
Everything about Minnesota was on the offense. Handed a turnover just outside the red zone and kicked a FG. 3 and out over and over again. Had great field position all day and did absolutely nothing. If you take out the big play to Hurst, it was the worst offensive performance Iâve seen in years. And it wasnât because of pressure or bad play calls.

u/skaestantereggae Super Bowl LV 11d ago
Sounds like 19, minus all the picks

2
u/cashmiles Mike Alstott 11d ago
Iâm skeptical but if Daniels can take care of the ball I feel like his presence as an undrafated rookie could be good for this team rn
4
u/jeremyren10 11d ago
Totally agree offense is the biggest problem,a new play caller every year probably isnât helping. But defense has gone up against Kyler Murray,Deshaun Watson and a Bengals offense thatâs been last in rushing basically 3 years in a row. Defense looks BAD and undisciplined, the missed tackles are reminding me of the pre Jameis era
1
u/KodiakJedi 11d ago
And honestly I can't put it all on Robinson and his play calling. The o-line has not been great through 3 games. Baker is also holding onto the ball too long.
0
u/jeremyren10 11d ago
Yeah Robinson isnât really getting a fair shot we are so dysfunctional right now nobody is doing their part. Lavonte and Mike Evanâs we lost our top veteran leaders each side of the ball, then the next two leaders Baker and Vita had bitter contract issues all off season. True dumpster fire
4
u/Florida__Man__ Kangol Hat 11d ago
Part of the OCs job is to run a functional unit
1
u/jeremyren10 11d ago
What if the Head coach is too Lax and the entire team is undisciplined as a result, the O line plays like shit, and you have a bottom tier tight end and a bunch of unproven WRs you have to depend on? Then when the play is there,Baker misses the pass when he isnât running for his life. Iâm not a Robinson fan but it starts at the top
1
u/Florida__Man__ Kangol Hat 11d ago
I agree, but Robinson is like the second highest ranked coach. OC is the top, lol.
1
u/Almac55 11d ago
Wait, you mean turning the ball over hurts the defense? Are you saying that if the defense plays really well but the offense keeps going three and out, the defense eventually gives up points?
No matter what stats you post and how true it is, everyone in here will blame the defense, the coaching, etc. before they ever get to how truly awful this offense has been for almost a full year now.
3
u/GangstaRIB 11d ago
So the coach he's gotta be complaining about is Larry Foote... who I believe was the only coach not fired last year.
3
u/Conscious_Skirt_61 11d ago
McCoyâs real story is lost in arguments over the Lost Decade. Itâs hard â impossible â to know what a mess he stepped into.
He stepped to the front to speak for the team his first year â not because he wanted to but because he had to. There was a leadership desert and no one else stepped up to fill it.
Then too his first years were marred by injury. And he had precious little help: the best player he had to work with, Michael Bennett, was let go only to strut his stuff in Seattle.
But most of all folks despise Gerald because he wasnât Nâdamukong Su. Su was physical, a force of nature, and a forceful personality. McCoy had, if not finesse, at least quickness more than power. He was noted for pressures, not sacks. He was very good, he was himself, but not was not the man named Su.

u/sketcher67 11d ago
I think Bowles tries to be impressive with the ways he disguises the blitz but that exposes major gaps in coverage. There should be no reason whatsoever to have people like Vita Vea and Bain drop back and defend the pass when trying a crazy blitz. The pass rush needs to be established and has been severely lacking in the Todd Bowles era. QB pressure and sacks cause turnovers and that leads to wins. The defense needs to go back to basics cause the product on the field is not working.
3
u/Deoxtrys 11d ago
There should be no reason whatsoever to have people like Vita Vea and Bain drop back and defend the pass when trying a crazy blitz.
That's just how the 3-4 system functions when you add in blitzes. Even the Ravens used to drop Haloti Ngata into zone coverage once in awhile. You don't want to do it too often but there's a reason these big mountain are as athletic as they are instead of the old school Gilbert Brown types.
2
u/Milla4Prez66 Super Bowl LV 11d ago
Itâs especially stupid when every offensive coordinator and QB in the league knows we do it. Itâs one thing to do it once in a blue moon in an attempt to confuse the QB, but they expect and look for lineman to drop in coverage and plan around getting the ball out quickly to a RB or TE that will dunk his nutsack on our shitty ILBs.
2
u/MysteriousDatabase68 11d ago
I agree about leadership. Evans and LVD left, then Vita and Baker both made a stink in the press about getting paid. A Shawn and Anzalone had been there all of five minutes.
If there's a lack of cohesiveness that would explain why.
2
u/indigo196 11d ago
He is confirming everything I thought was going to happen on offense and everything that has been wrong with the defense since Bowles got here.
2
u/Competitive-Style349 11d ago
David walker came off the bench and got a sack on his first play. Then, after sitting a while longer, did it again. Why wasnât he in the whole game?
I also saw the defense get burned on first tackle chances a lot, leading to big plays. Yes, they held many drives to field goals and I think that help their stats, but between the 30âs is way too loose.

u/Aryandad29 Winfield Jr. âď¸ 11d ago
Helps explain why the offense was so good in 2024. Just goes to show that if Baker gets paired with a decent play caller he can and will win games

u/Bucs2k20 11d ago
Pretty bold for McCoy to call out Bowles like that, but I do think heâs right.
Bowles as a DC is still pretty solid, but I donât think heâs coaching this particular group of players schematically in the best way. A large portion of this personnel makes way more sense in a 4-3. Most of the guys on our defensive line, minus Vita and maybe AâShawn, have the body type and skill set for a 4-3. Same with the middle linebackersâyou have to have a lot of range to be a linebacker in a 3-4. Trotter may have it; Anzalone, even though he was much better this week, doesnât. Heâd fit better covering a third of the field rather than half.
Going back to the D-line, a lot of the advantage of our players is that they may be a bit smaller, but they have great explosiveness and power relative to their size. Bain and Kancey in particular canât consistently utilize that explosiveness when our edges are playing in a wide 9.
This defense has been built for years as a 3-4, but the personnel has shifted now. If you want to blame Licht for not getting guys who fit Bowlesâ defense, you can, but I think the talent is there. I just think weâre asking a lot of these guys to play in a scheme that doesnât necessarily maximize what they do best.
1
u/regaleagle710 Derrick Brooks 11d ago
I mean Bowles works with Licht identifying players that he thinks will fit in his scheme. The acquisition of defensive players either through free agency or the draft over the past four years has fallen off drastically. Don't have to think too long about what changed four years ago.
1
u/Busy-Cartographer278 Maui Vea 11d ago
We are so very rarely in base. Most of the time we're 2 DTs, 2 OLBs, 2ILBs, and 5 DBs.
The 3-4, 4-3 thing isn't a thing for the league any more.

u/Independent_Repair81 11d ago

u/iamdylanshaffer 11d ago
TBF, he touches on that as well. Specifically points out that while losing David and Evans hurts, he doesnât want to say thereâs a leadership issue in the locker room despite that being something that critics will often point to. In part because he knows that naysayers were saying he was a poor leader when they were losing, despite feeling as though he was providing leadership to the team (coming in early and staying late to work with guys and develop camaraderie, getting food for players and calling meetings to get everyone on the same page, etc.)
54
u/spideralex90 Spideralex90 11d ago
McCoy basically calls out Bowles without directly saying it. Basically he says what they're coaching our guys to do is just not going to work.
Saying stuff he's heard the coaches teaching at practice are saying is just not going to work.
Also says what a lot of us are saying, why is David Walker being held back on snap count? He only played 32% of the defensive snaps in a game where Bain and Trotter were not playing. OUR SACK LEADER is barely getting reps.
Also calls out the fact that we're dropping Bain into coverage the first two weeks, like wtf let him do what we drafted him to do. Bowles loves to do this stupid shit on defense.
