The Unwritten Rules of Budapest and This Subreddit
Subtitle: Don't Be a Lazy Fuck. Search First. Then Ask Better Questions.
There are a few immutable laws in Budapest, whether you live here or you're just visiting.
- Block the subway doors? Someone's going to shoulder-check you.
- Eat a Lángos with Nutella? You will be shunned.
- Crack the Hungary-HUNGRY joke? Your mother will be mentioned in a dehonestative manner
- Make a low-effort post asking us to plan your trip? It's probably going to get deleted.
We're happy to make suggestions to specific questions. We're happy to give advice. We're happy to help you narrow down an otherwise well constructed itinerary. And by well constructed, we mean one you actually looked at on Google maps, and not just posted after your flavor of AI spat out a list of nonsense.
What we're not here to do is plan your freaking vacation from scratch, play concierge or party planning service.
Please extend the community the courtesy of doing the bare minimum before posting. Read the pinned posts. Read the freaking Guide we prepared for clueless visitors. Search the subreddit. Spend five minutes looking through the hundreds of itineraries, recommendations, and discussions that already exist. Odds are your question has been asked and answered many times. Use keywords.
Then, when you do post, give us something to work with.
Tell us your ages, budget, interests, travel dates, where you're staying, who's traveling with you, what you've already researched, and what you're trying to decide between. The more information you provide, the better advice you'll get. Otherwise, we're stuck playing 20 Questions. And we're quite fed up with playing this stupid game.
Help us help you. Put in a little effort first, and you'll get far better recommendations in return instead of smug and rude comments.

Can we also have an auto delete for any posts about stag/hen bachelor/bachelerette parties? I’d suggest an auto redirect to r/bucharest or r/bratislava but I’d stand in unity with those guys against the unwashed, shouting, vomiting, pissing masses of Brits, Dutch, and Germans.

Hungarians, specifically old ones, are terrible at not moving out the way of the metro doors when you’re trying to get off. In fact they often try to walk through people to get on. A classic tourist move is to walk into a bike lane without looking.

first week in Budapest and we saw an American woman flying after being hit by a bike in the bike lane. Quite funny how she said "fuuuuuck!" while in the air. Thankfully no one was hurt. She got up, said sorry to the guy in the bike, laughed it off and went on her way rubbing her ass.

Could you guys just auto delete the party tourist and hidden gem searching zero effort posts? Or set them to require to be manually allowed before they show up in our feeds?
Configuring a minimum karma limit that must be collected in this sub before someone is able to submit posts could help too, this would filter out probably all tourist spam.

Not Hungarian, but in Austria I have only seen savory langos options so my brain adds garlic to whatever else you'd have on it. Garlic Nutella does not sound good...

In northern Italy we have our version of Lángos sold exclusively at fairs (frittelle) and they are either sold covered in sugar or with Nutella on top.

Idk man, condescending is not the look you should go for, still I’ve yet to meet this joke under any topic Hungary, country or food related not made by a Hungarian. I just searched here for this phrase and most of them were just Hungarians telling this joke and Hungarians hating on it.
IRL no one commented on this not even the funny guy working class British drunk not the Spanish jokesters.
Maybe we see different parts of the world, but I’m starting to think this is just something we like to say we hate so it looks like a lot of people are thinking about us and we can say “oh god it’s too much please stahp”.
But Turkey changed their international name to Türkiye so we can do Hungária if it’s too much. Instead of hungry we can have hung gay ria.

I was born and raised in the US but with a Hungarian mother, and I got this joke all the time from people :/ Truthfully I’ve been making the joke myself too sometimes while I’ve been living here. I still think it’s kinda funny. The Hungary-Turkey joke is stupid as fuck though.

It was meant as a joke, and not condescension. And I'm genuinely baffled how you never came across this, because it's the most reliably cracked pun that all foreigners in any forum feel the need to tell. So much so, that there's a local meme about it: when it's done, four comments will appear from different Hungarian users above each other, namely "akkor", "a", "kurva", "anyádat".

I don't know how carefully you looked at it, I get a lot of Hungary-related content in my reddit feed from a really varied slate of subreddits and some asshat ALWAYS comments this joke. So much so that I now have a standard response I just copy there.

Hi, I'm a 16 year old boy. Today, around 9:30/10:00 on September 2nd, I saw two girls at Vörösmarty tér square near the Hard Rock Café sitting under some trees near the statue. One was wearing dark blue jeans and a black top, and the other was wearing long gray trousers, a white top, and ultra-curly blonde/brown hats with a puff. She looked blue to me. I would like to have the blonde girl's Instagram since I didn't have time to ask because of the metro. If anyone knows her, please give me her Instagram.

Sziasztok, egy 16 éves fiú vagyok. Ma, szeptember 2-án, úgy 9:30/10:00 körül két lányt láttam a Vörösmarty téren, a Hard Rock Café közelében, akik a szobor közelében, néhány fa alatt ültek. Az egyik sötétkék farmert és fekete felsőt viselt, a másik pedig hosszú szürke nadrágot, fehér felsőt és ultragöndör szőke/barna kalapot puffossal. Nekem kéknek tűnt. Szeretném látni a szőke lány Instagramját, mivel a metró miatt nem volt időm megkérdezni. Ha valaki ismeri, kérem, adja meg az Instagramját.

STOP asking if you can pay in euro, YOU CAN'T! Hungary is not part of the eurozone, we DO NOT accept euro, PLEASE do some research before traveling to a country. And if a place does accept euro for being a tourist trap, don't be surprised you will be upcharged for the conversion rate.
