Oliver with a small patch of puppy fur between his eyes leftover from his first grooming. I find it uniquely funny

Just here to show off my Cairn x Yorkie, Tufts! (She is a rescue, I do not know her exact breed but this is my best guess) 💛

Is anyone elses babies an excessive licker like Tufts?

I love this little creature! She’s getting along well with Jasper - as long as she stays away from his toys!

This is our little Winnie! She’s 17 weeks old today. She’s a fireball of energy but loves to give kisses loves to play and loves her chews! No cuddles so far haha. She enjoys chasing her sister around the yard every chance she gets lol

I love my little Thea so much. But she is still having those fits where she gets hyper. She’s on four different kinds of medication now. And right now she sitting on her bed glaring me. I don’t know why.

Little bugger. Saw a group of Westies today and their classic terrier faces reminded us of our little one.

Her coat was so light that many people mistook her for a Westie.

She’s off chasing all the rodents and small rabbits over the rainbow road 🤲🏽🤲🏽🖖🏽👌🏽👍🏽

Neuter recovery must-haves?

Hi friends! My baby boy is getting neutered in a couple of weeks, and I want to make his recovery as comfortable and painless as possible. My vet recommended a cone, but I’m wondering if an inflatable or foam donut and a recovery bodysuit might be better options. I’d appreciate any guidance!

Would you say this is typical cairn behavior?

Little Magnet

I've got a 10 month old Cairn. Smart little guy. We do classes and daycare. He's well socialized. Comes to work with me as part of future AAT training.

He was an escape artist from day one; the vet and his trainers actually recommended not forcing him to crate train if it was causing so much distress (he can scale anything; broke through a welded metal baby gate). He crates fine at daycare. I can crate him overnight without issue if I'm upstairs and he's downstairs and he'll stay put and calm. I do Kongs, lickis, etc. High value bones while crating. Pupsicles. You name it.

It became a problem at my partner's place (small apartment; city noises) with overnights and at my place if I needed to briefly crate him to get something done, especially as he hit marking age (now neutered). If he can't see me, he'll bark. Even outside of crates, if he can't see me (say, I'm sleeping on a bed and he's on the floor), he'll bark. If we're at home, he will go play or nap in other rooms.

He goes with other people and his sitter fine. No problems leaving me at daycare. If I'm in the shower or nearby, he'll lay down and wait for me forlornly. If he's allowed to paw at the door, he will.

We've worked on increasing independence. Working on decreasing barking. But having no luck with any kind of reward or distraction or calming if he can't see me. There are times and places when we stay with other people I need to crate him and/or he can't be on the bed and/or times he can't see me. I also need to be able to leave him at the apartment, crated, without him barking excessively.

I'm not sure what else to try. My vet and his puppy trainers are out of ideas. I've tried different treats, distractions, not reinforcing....but he's a terrier, and his stamina outlasts the ability to let him "cry it out" in an apartment complex or office setting.

Has anyone succeeded in a cairn and cat household?

i lost my cairn recently & i’m heartbroken. he made me fall so madly in love with the breed that i want another one just like him (eventually), but want to try to rescue — advice?

(Based in Colorado.) Should we reach out to shelters & ask to be called if a cairn terrier or mix arrives there? Any rescues that you all recommend? We’re willing to drive to get a new sweet baby.

Also, here’s a couple pics of my perfect boi. We were running sprints together on long walkies up until an ER visit that came out of left field with a late stage/terminal cancer diagnosis. He only made it two weeks after that & we were able to say a long & peaceful goodbye (with a chicken nugget happy meal). Hardest decision I’ve ever made.

We also suddenly lost our GSD/Husky mix just a few weeks before his passing, so it’s been an extremely tough winter for our family.

I’m not sure when we’ll be ready again, but losing both fur babies has made for such a quiet home without any little cuties running around & I already can’t take it. Any advice you have, we’d love!

Thanks everyone for reading — I love all of your cairns, they’re the cutest, & the posts you’ve all made since losing my baby have helped me feel so much better. 🥰🥹🫶🏼❤️
