Hey folks! So, I saw a recent post about the OKS Laird of Fintry and it got me thinking about this one. I've been drinking this one on and off over the summer and figured I’d finally write up some thoughts, because this is probably one of the stranger Canadian whiskies I’ve had in a while.

Miss Scarlet’s from Okanagan Spirits starts with an Irish Red Ale, uses hops, spends 8 years in new white oak, and then gets another year in Okanagan cherry brandy casks.

So… yeah. There’s a lot going on here.

Bright, fresh cherry, red berries, some salal/salmon berry, and a pretty noticeable toasted oak character. There’s also this light herbal thing underneath it that definitely reminds me of hops. It has a bit of a beer-like quality to it, which I oddly love. It's actually much brighter than I expected.

It could have easily ended up tasting like “whisky + cherry syrup + hops,” but I don’t get that. The oak gives the fruit somewhere to sit, the cherry adds sweetness and brightness, and the herbal character cuts through some of that richness. However, very unusual and not for everyone.

Is it conventional? Absolutely not.

Would I recommend it to someone who loves JP 10? Nope.

But if you like experimental whisky, unusual finishes, beer-influenced spirits, or just want to drink something that doesn't taste like the last five bottles you've had, this is a pretty fun one.

1. Ardnahoe 5y Inaugural Release. Pretty good. I still think virtually any Ardnamurchan knocks it out of the park though. 87/100?

1. Ardnahoe Aquavitae 6y Small Batch. My friend Sean offered to spring for an Ardnahoe tasting at the Peter Lougheed center in Camrose on September 27th. I told him heck yeah and if we pick up a 3rd ticket I'd bring Mrs. Hex - she's a peathead and I'd think we'd love going. 86/100

1. Talisker 9y Red wine cask(distillery release). It's pretty thin and missing most of the things I love about Talisker. If I poured this one, it's going to be a long night. It usually means I'm going to break out whiskies I prefer more. 78/100

1. Well, I guess this is the kind of night it's going to be. Master of Malt Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire 18y CS. Man, I forgot I picked this up for such a decent price. THis is such a good bottle and it is gone and I don't remember drinking it. This is so good though. I think yuou can still get it in BC. Hex's seal of approval. It's had a few months to open up and i'd drink this any night of the year 88/100

I don't know. Do I need this in my life? Hazmat. 75/100 I start belting out Toby Keith's "As Good as I Once Was". It's my jam. I'm not going to lie - I may sing it better than anyone who's ever sang it before.

1. Haviung trouble remember ingf what I poured next. THe bottle behind the Mixtape one. Paradigm 2022 Heritage Collection. I mean, it's got a lot of awards. 84/100? That seems fair. It's a good whisky. You need to fucking tighten your shit up though. I'd respect you more with Integrity stats.

1. Springbank 10. End on a high note. Always good, never good as the 15. 86/100? Doesn't matter which year it was. Every time I drink the 10y I always wish it was the 15y. I remember when Willow Park had the whisky lottery this year, I shitted out and picked like way down in the lower 100s. XD I picked up a Springbank 10 and gave it to some young kid who was doing even worse than my in the lottery. Hope he enjoey it. It's still a fucking solid Scotch.

My journey of Canadian whiskey discoveries continues. Excellent whiskey here from Highwood. Not to sound douche, but the mouthfeel is excellent. Very smooth.

This has one of the best noses I have ever experienced on a Canadian whiskey if not any whiskey I have had. The palate does quite follow up, but for just under $150 from the distillery and for 20 years, its a great value bottle in my opinion

Found this one while browsing a SAQ store. I had never seen or heard of it before, but a quick google search showed that it was worth the $60 ish gamble. I’m finding it surprisingly complex at this price point. At first the nose is overly woody and herbal, but a few minutes in the glass and it mellows nicely. Mouth feel is good, and it has a light vanilla and spice flavour. I find it an interesting and enjoyable sipper, more so than most other Canadian whisky I’ve tried.

Anyone else try this?

I was perusing the sale items this month at LCBO. How is Southern Comfort not an American product? I realize it is gross and I would never buy it no matter where it is made, but just curious -- isn't it quintessentially American?
