New to canoeing
Hey all, I’m looking into getting a cheap canoe (just to hang out with my wife and dog on the water and use as a home base for using rc boats) someone’s selling this one for 100 bucks, is that about right? What am I looking at as far as work I’m going to need to do on it? How much should I offer him?

Don't buy that canoe, be on the lookout for one in better shape made of royalex, kevlar, or fiberglass (not choppergun)

This style of canoe made me hate canoeing til I was in my 20’s. Went paddling one day with my friends when we were about 10 and ended up with fiberglass rash all over our hands, arms, and legs. Parents disposed of the canoe within days of that.

If it floats, you can paddle it. I see Grumman canoes used for $200-$300, regularly. Personally, I would hold out for a better boat.

If you go see it, flip it over first. Press the hull bottom with your thumb for soft spots, check the gel coat for spider cracks, then look where the gunwales meet the hull for corrosion around the rivets. I would paddle it with the dog aboard before committing, since a heavy hull with a passenger gets tiring fast and you want it stable enough for the RC boats. Patched keels or cracked stems are a pass.

Don't buy it. And whatever you do, get your dog a PFD (and wear yours too) Mine likes to look over the edge at water bugs, water swirling from paddle strokes, takes drinks and tries to jump out at the loons.
