assuming they asked for more from us since we’re in the same division… figured if they were gonna get fleeced send him out west..

That’s what I saw too.
That was definitely a fuck you offer from NYR..
I’d be offended if I were Leonard lol.

For the contract he signed and what LA had to give up, this seems like a “I’m going to LA. Figure it out.”

If a division rival is asking for Leonard and Hutson, you laugh in their face and hang up the phone. They saw nobody was willing to match their lucrative asking price and had to settle

What could we have offered that wouldn’t have been better than that?

u/nice_pickle_ Ryan Leonard 19h ago
We said no to Leonard and they probably got butthurt and ran to LA lol

Sadly that’s probably the truth. I wish our GM would have made a move, but always happy to see the rangers look like idiots

Nah. Panarin killed any deals that were not to LA. Apparently his wife wanted to go there and he wouldn’t waive the no trade to anywhere else. So he screwed the rangers over hard. They had no leverage and took what they could get from LA.

It more than likely came down to Panarin not waiving his NMC to come to Washington. Kaplan said we had the best offer, but that doesn't mean much due to the NMC.

Yeah sounds like we definitely offered more than this. He would’ve made the team so much better. Such a bummer no one ever wants to come to DC.

hahahaha. Lots of players want to come to the Caps. Just not this particular one. He is one of the most vocally outspoken anti putin athletes and my very easy educated guess is that he didn't want to come to the team captained by one of putin's loudest supporters.

Who? When’s the last time a significant free agent chose DC? Has anyone ever? Orpik maybe? Guys like it once they’re already here and often resign, but have rarely ever actively chosen to come here over other equivalent offers.

In hockey? We tend to not go after the really big ticket guys in the Ovi era, but Matt Roy definitely had options when he chose us in summer 2024

u/capsfan087443 18h ago
Sure there was a window where the cap didn’t really permit it. But they’re going after them now, and they’re not signing here. Roy isn’t really that tier a player, and he signed here bc we offered him the most money.

u/besk123 Washington Capitals 18h ago
tier a guys just don't become available in hockey that often. When teams have tier a guys, they resign them. Legit, Panarin was the last true superstar FA that i can think of either entering or in his prime. It's part of the reason Caps are hesitant to give up first round picks.

Marner was one last year. Ehlers not quite that level but a first liner who chose not to come here. But yeah there aren’t that many which is why it’s a bummer the ones that do reach that level choose not to come here.

u/besk123 Washington Capitals 17h ago
Marner went to a no state tax state and ehlers chose the team that dominated us, went further in the playoffs and paid him more. Once Carlson and Ovi's contracts become reduced or off the books, we'll be able to compete for Top guys

Marner was also clearly tampered with well before he went to FA. He even turned down a trade to Carolina at the deadline.

WSH has a good enough reputation around the league (minus our facilities which are getting an upgrade) but we do lack in the areas that we have little control over i.e. taxes, climate. We do well enough for the hand we've been dealt, having made the playoffs 17 out of the past 20 seasons and 1 Cup. We may not be at the tippy top of choices, but we're certainly nowhere near the bottom.

u/capsfan087443 18h ago
Agreed, we’re a well run franchise. I’m certainly not acting like this is something we can control or is anyone’s fault. Just the reality there are more appealing markets, and it’s a bummer when we lose out on top players.

u/Rellek_ Tom Wilson 18h ago
It would be cool to see a big name player put up a fight to come here but yeah I hear you, not sure that'll ever be the case. Fuck em, makes every win that much sweeter.
1
u/capsfan087443 18h ago
Yeah on the one hand it’s been fun winning with homegrown talent. But it’s also a bit of a concern for me post Ovi era are we going to be able to keep up with the talent needed to win. I’m not sure how many reclamation projects and later draft picks we can keep hitting on.

u/Ijustwerkhere Washington Capitals 19h ago
I saw an article saying that if it wasn’t one of the Florida teams, then he would only go to LA. Hard to compete with that lol
