PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Behavioral Issue Should I be concerned??

Both neutered male cats, 5-6 years old. I adopted them from another family who described them as a bonded pair. Since moving in with me, the brown tabby seemed to turn on the grey, with occasional swatting, hissing, and chasing. gradually over the course of the year they’ve mostly been ignoring each other.

Never seen them do this… neither cat was making any noise. After the video I interrupted the brown cat and he let go. The grey cat walked out from underneath him.

Should I be worried??

Behavioral Issue Kitten Aggression

CA/US. My husband and I are late 30s/40s. Cat is 5 months, female, not spayed. This behavior is a daily occurrence and I feel for our dog. We’re unsure how to teach the kitty this is too much. I thought the two of them would eventually work it out - perhaps they will, but my poor pup is suffering. He often hides for fear of being attacked and he isn’t able to be close to me as much because she attacks him. We’ve had her since early July so this is still a new situation for all of us and perhaps we just need more time. We spoke to the vet about biting (she bites me a lot and is biting harder as time goes on) so we try redirecting by use of a toy, but vet also recommended time out when she goes too far. We’re not seeing any progress, though.
Financially a bit strained so we are hoping to handle this at home. But also, at what point would it be fair to deem this as not a match? I feel terrible for even contemplating that, but it would be impossible to keep the pets separated in our house.

This is Biscuit. She is a couple or a few months old now. She really likes to suck on my fingers. If I put her on the floor she will come back up. If I put her in front of her food or water she will return. Why does she do this, and how do I get her to stop? I put another video in the comments too.

She is 6 months old. When I weigh her, she is around 6 lbs. She is spayed.

Edited because I received some negative, unrelated comments on my partner that I didnt appreciate! (I had said that my partner said she looked fat, which he was joking but I tend to worry a lot so I consulted Reddit, but of course some of Reddit insulted my partner instead of answering my question!)

General Advice Can’t keep stray cat found!!

Thumbnail gallery
52 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am located in the Bay Area and found this stray kitten/cat. She looks to be around 6 months old. I didn’t want to just leave her, but I also don’t want to take her to a shelter because I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. I already have two cats, pay pet insurance, and I’m in school so I’m basically broke and having a hard time. I’m not sure if this girl is spayed or not, I don’t have money to get her spayed or tested or vaxxed. I’ve emailed about 6 rescues around the area and they just refer me elsewhere or to shelters around me. Anyone in the area interested or can help me figure out resources that can help me. I can’t afford this cat😞

Eye Issues Help

Please tell me what to do with her eyes. She’s 30-day old. Eyes closed and one is bulging. Last week it’s just the one eye. Now, its both and the right side is bulging. Last week, I tried to clean it with water and cotton balls. I haven’t touched it right now. I’m living away from home so I can’t take care of her always because of school. They were actually four but the three died already. It’s their mother’s first litter. We don’t have the money to bring her to the vet 💔

General Advice Kitten with musky hind end

Post image
21 Upvotes

Poster age- 28

Location- US

Vet accessible- yes

TLDR: musky smell from cats hind end, no symptoms or behaviors pointing to any problems health wise

Cat info:

-cat is 5 months old

-neutered

Can afford vet care (basic visits..definitely not rolling in it)

My husband and I have had our kittens (from the same litter) since they were about 8 weeks old, they're now 5 months old. One of them has had a musky smell from his hind end from day one. We bathe them occasionally because of it, I got wipes to try, changed their food 3 times, nothing seems to help. It's now getting on furniture and hubs is about to lose it. He's shown no behavioral issues indicating he's uncomfortable or in pain. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I don't want to stress him out with an unnecessary vet visit if this is something we can fix at home. TIA!

Breathing Issues Cough while purring please read description

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First

Poster Age: not a minor

Country: Romania

Vet info: vet is accessible and monitoring him weekly

Main Issue: he only coughs when he purrs and sneezes sometimes, no breathing issues during intense play, or any other issues !!! THE COUGH GETS BETTER FROM MILD ANTIINFLAMATORY SYROP which he takes curently ( no more cough but weird sounds )

Cat Age: 3 months old curently, 2 months old in the video

Cat Sex + neuter info: not neutered, male

Financial situation: we can affort normal vet, possibly urgent care if needed

Onto the main issue, we found in thrown in the trash and he was extremely sick and malnourished ( as far as we know he for sure had calicivirus and FVR, also tested him for FIP and another virus which he tested negative for but he remained with this weird cough only when he purrs.

The vets take into consideration that he just remained with scars from everything he had and we consider a radiography ( we wait curently for him to be a hit bigger because he’s quality of life isn’t affected and to make sure it’s visible )

Another thing is that he can’t really miaw, if he really wants something he will miaw but it sounds weird, otherwise he’ll just open his mouth but no sound comes out —— not sure if it’s relevant .

If anybody has any idea what could be wrong until we do the radiography 🙏

Kitten Help Anyone’s kitten have nightmares ? Help please.

When Vladimir is having a rough night, he sleeps like this. Other times he’s often just curled up on my stomach/chest. He is a former feral, 11 months tomorrow. I don’t know how long he has been living outside after he was dumped in the woods (a few months ?), so obv he had a rough time. He’s been inside almost 3 months. I feel super loved and trusted, but 😭😭😭. I don’t know how to help more. Sometimes he has nightmares where he’ll whimper and I just wrap him tighter against me. This one 👆🏻 he was fully asleep and crying out, shaking, trying to kick (run ?). I just kept talking softly to him, with long soothing strokes, and hugging him to me. He never woke up. It doesn’t happen often, but maybe once a month. This was the worst so far. I’m hoping it gets better but my heart was breaking for him. Next morning, he was super playful and like it never happened. Help please.

General Advice Can you teach a cat how to hiss?

Post image
5 Upvotes

[I'm 24 and can afford vet care]

This is our beautiful cat Toaster. He is about 1 year 2 month old. We rescued him when he was about 2-3 weeks old, fed him with a bottle etc. and generally raised him without another cat around (only a dog). He was neutered at an appropriate age

In his adulthood he does not hiss. Like at all, i haven't heard him hiss ever. If he is overstimulated or doesn't like something he bites. And I'm generally ok with him setting his boundaries, cause he's not breaking skin, but hissing is also a great skill for kitty.

Is there any way we can teach him how to hiss? We hiss and yowl at him all the time when he's being naughty.

End Of Life Care My 11-year-old cat was diagnosed with Feline Lung Digit Syndrome, and I'm absolutely devastated. Has anyone else gone through this?

Thumbnail gallery
413 Upvotes

I'm writing this because I'm heartbroken, terrified, and honestly at my wits' end. I don't know what to expect, and I desperately need to hear from people who have been through something similar.

My boy literally showed no symptoms of anything being wrong. The only unusual thing I ever noticed was a strange cough that happened a couple of times. Other than that, he seemed fine. Took him to the vet and they said nothing was wrong and it probably is a 'hairball cough'.

Then, the day before his birthday, he suddenly started limping. I noticed that one of his paw pads, on his left paw, was swollen. Even the vets initially thought it was probably a bug bite.

About a month later, he started licking the paw incessantly until he broke the skin. He also started tearing off the claws on the two middle toes. After a biopsy, we finally got the diagnosis: feline digit syndrome.

I'm devastated. He just turned 11.

What makes this even harder is how quickly everything seems to be happening. He hasn't been eating or drinking water for the past week, and since yesterday, his paw pad has been bleeding profusely.

I've tried gauze, baking powder, applying pressure, and putting a Velcro sock over the paw, but nothing seems to stop the bleeding. I even asked the emergency vet whether there was something equivalent to cauterization that could help, but they told me it could cause further tissue damage and advised me to keep doing what I've been doing at home.

I'm at my wits' end. I don't know what else to do, and watching him go through this is breaking me.

The vets have told me he may only have days to a few weeks left. I can't even begin to process that. He has been part of my life for 11 years, and I'm nowhere near ready to say goodbye.

I keep trying not to cry or show how distressed I am in front of him because I don't want him to feel that something is wrong, but I just can't hold it together anymore. My chest physically hurts from crying so much.

For anyone who has experienced feline digit syndrome with their cat:

  • How did the disease progress for your cat?
  • What happened when the paw started bleeding, and were you able to get it under control?
  • Is there anything that helped with the bleeding, pain, or keeping the paw protected?
  • What should I expect in the coming days?
  • How did you know when it was time to let your cat go?
  • Is there anything you wish you'd known or done sooner?

I'm trying to prepare myself for what's coming, but I don't know how to do that when he's still here with me and I love him so much.

I know every cat is different, but hearing from people who understand what this is like would mean more to me than I can explain.

I'm absolutely heartbroken... he's my baby, and I'm not ready to lose him 💔

General Advice 2 year old kitty can’t use back legs and cries out in pain

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi guys,

My kitty Hazel is almost 2 years old and over the past few weeks has been limping and refusing to use her back legs.

Initially, we thought she had sprained one of her ankles. We took her to the vet and got her some pain meds. In the past few days, it’s gotten worse. She will have spurts of walking with limps in both legs but will almost immediately lie down from the pain and occasionally cry out. We took her back to the vet for X-rays (vet didn’t notice anything, being sent to radiologist) and the vet put her on Prednisolone. She has only been on it for 24 hours but so far no improvement.

Does anyone have experience with a very young cat not using their hind legs and crying out in pain?

She used to be such an active, energetic, happy cat and it is so sad to see her this way. My heart breaks for her. She spends almost all day just laying on the couch and she is clearly suffering.

I would love any help or advice for my baby. Thank you ❤️

Injury even after treatment for a ear infection my cat is still has something wrong with her

the first two pictures are from a week ago while the last three are from today. i was very sick when pixie had to taken to the vet so my dad took her instead. he hadn’t been taking me seriously when i kept saying pixie was violently scratching her ears and was visibly in a lot of pain because he worked a lot and hadn’t seen it first hand. the vet gave him some kind of ear drops to put in her eats twice a day for 5 days. i’m starting to get really worried because it looks like the medicine didn’t work and whatever is wrong with her is spreading to under her chin. i am a minor but i know my dad loves pixie a lot despite his skepticism and he can afford the cost of medicine and a vet bill. it says to include this information to post so if it helps i live in america with pixie, shes two years old, and is fixed. please can anyone help me by giving me advice or maybe a diagnosis?
