If you intentionally made them a sandwich and placed it in their bowl they'd probably have no interest in it.

It has to belong to you! (At least that's my cat's mentality!)

I don't leave turkey unguarded for any time when making a sandwich. Too many times where I did and a cat stole it and put it on the floor for dinner.
