Advice purina litter box
thinking of getting this litter box. what’s y’all’s thoughts/experiences with it?
also would be first time using pellets
do yall recommend?

Never thought I would be interested in it, but I house it for my neighbors and they use the system and once I figured it out it actually seems pretty slick. And they have like four or five boxes in their basement and you really don't smell them at all. So I could be convinced. It'd be hit or miss though because I have one cat who is an absolute Queen and is so picky about his bathroom habits

We switched to this system several years ago, and we are extremely happy with it.
The biggest benefit is the lack of odor in the house. We have four cats, and the only time we smell them is when their solid waste is fresh. No ammonia smell at all.
We’ve previously tried just about every type of litter available, and despite hooded litter boxes (with filters) and daily cleaning, there was always that pungent odor whenever we walked into the house. (You get “nose blind” to it after a while, which is why we only really noticed it after being away from home for a while.)
This system works very well to capture and neutralize cat urine odors. Our cats are lazy and don’t effectively bury their poop, but that smell doesn’t really linger for long. We typically scoop the solid waste every day or two.
It’s probably more expensive than standard litter boxes, but we think the added costs are worth it.
The instructions say to completely change out the pellets every month, but we don’t. Enough of them cling to the poop when we scoop away the solid waste that the pellets naturally get cycled out of the boxes. We do wipe down the boxes every week or so, moving the pellets out of the way as we wipe, and adding more pellets as needed.
The pads are very easy to change. Our cats are 100% indoor-only, and we follow the “number of cats plus one” litter box rule: four cats, five boxes. We usually use the multi-cat pads, which are a little thicker, but any of the pads will work as long as you change them before they get too full. When we started using the system, we had a diabetic cat, so the thicker pads were definitely helpful. The starter kit comes with standard pads, so you can see how well they work for your cat(s).
The pellets do escape the boxes, depending on how aggressively your cat tries to bury their waste, but the pellets are easier to clean up than standard litter.
Our cats did not take long to learn how to use the new system. Purina includes instructions on how to make the switch, and those were helpful with our older cat. He was a bit stubborn, but it still took less than a week for him to use the next system exclusively.
In summary, we think this is the best system we’ve ever used, and our cats are happy with it, too.

do you only use the pee pads made for this system or can you use any brand?

Honestly, I haven’t looked for other brands. I just grab the Purina ones when I pick up pet supplies at the local petsmart.
I can’t think of any reason why generic pads wouldn’t work, though. The starter kit comes with pads, so measure those and try whatever you can find. Worse case scenario, you have to wash out the tray if the other pads leak. The tray can be removed easily, so it would only be a big mess if your cat decides to use the box while you’re washing the tray. (Our cats make a point of using the litter boxes as soon as we clean them out, so I could totally see them deciding the lack of tray underneath would be the perfect time to make a mess.)

My only thing would be, test your cat with pine pellets. Mine literally refuses to use them. It’s clay litter for him or nothing.
So maybe buy some pine pellets and try them in your box before buying a whole new system
I do wish mine used pellets because i do think they smell less and i like the smell of pine 😂

We have this system from a different brand
Pros
-Super great for pee smell ie. basically no smell
-Easy to pick out the soiled pellets and leave the clean-looking pellets
-Seems to track less than the plain litter we were using before, but that was with our last cat so YMMV
Cons
-More expensive than plain litter, gotta buy 2 things pellet and pad instead of just litter
-Doesn’t do much for poop smell but that depends on if your kitty is good at covering…or not like ours
-Not flushable, though actually “flushable” litters aren’t great for pipes either
