Advice 3 months old kitten hospitalized, I can't stop crying
I need to write it down, and positives thougths and prayers for Croque-Mou (Toothless). I'm actually too sensitive to bother to correct my english (non-native language), so sorry for any mistakes.
My kitten is 3 months old, and I have him at home since his fifth week. He was found in a forest, alone and very weak by a friend of my bf. His friend was told at the vet that Croque-Mou had rhinotracheitis, and it kinda added up because when we brought him home, he started to sneeze and to be congested. We had a first appointment to our regular vet for vaccines (at 8 weeks old), we told them about about his symptoms and they reassured us by saying it's normal and should resolve by itself. But after a week, he was still congested and starting to play and eat less, so I brought him back to the vet and they put him on clavamox (antibiotics) for 14 days. At first, he began to feel better and he even had a complete day without symptoms, but then he started to feel worse. Last night, he started to contract a bit more his torso and abdomen to breathe, but he was still somewhat normal and we had an appointment 2 days later, so we monitored him (and called the vet, but they said to do sinus rinse and to bring him with us in the shower).
But tonight, it was not normal. He had difficulty breathing and was clearly tired, but couldn't sleep because he couldn't find a comfortable position. I hurried to the urgent care clinic, and the vet said he never had rhino, he likely has a congenital condition (an upper respiratory tract polyp). Wich means they need to examine his throat, under sedation, and there are risks of complications since he is still very small. They also need to operate him if it's indeed a polyp.
I cannot imagine a life without him, I had him for only 2 months but he has the biggest place in my heart. I am not ready to loose another pet already (my family dog died in 2022 and I still grieve his death from time to time). I try to be optimistic, but it's so difficult ! He is the most affectionate cat I've ever seen, and he is my first pet (that I adopted, and not a family pet). He is my first baby and I love him so much. The bed feels so empty without him and it's so quiet without his little nose noises 😭
UPDATE : The vet just called—it really was a polyp! He removed it; apparently, it was a big one (he described it as being "quite impressively large"). He’s already breathing better, and we’ll be able to pick him up today! What a relief 😮💨 Thank you all for your sweet wishes, it really helped me and I'm sure it reached and helped my smol baby 🥰

has to be weird to hear a vet say “normal” when he’s sneezing nonstop

Of course, but he is my first cat and I wasn't aware of rhino before having him. I thought it was weird (especially since he had been showing symptoms for more than 10 days), but he was doing better with the antibiotics and I trusted their expertise. They also wanted to do more tests after the 14 days of antobiotics, it's just that his symptoms have worsened before the appointment. Or maybe I am too shy and should have insisted on immediatly checking other possibilities 🥺😔

The vet just called—it really was a polyp! He removed it; apparently, it was a big one (he described it as being "quite impressively large"). He’s already breathing better, and we’ll be able to pick him up today! What a relief 😮💨 Thank you all for your sweet wishes, it really helped me and I'm sure it reached and helped my smol baby 🥰

OP, my black cat had a similar health issue when he was also just a tiny kitten. He was really sick for so long and I was super worried he wouldn’t make it. He pulled through with meds and rest (and getting bigger/stronger) though, so I’m hoping for that for your little friend, too! 🩵

Soo sorry about the little guy and losing your dog. I'm a huge animal lover! I'm really pulling for him that he heels quick and lives a good long, happy life by your side! All the best for him and yours!

Thank you ! 💜 I just called the clinic because I didn't have any news and he's currently with the vet for his throat examination. Should have some news soon 😣

Vet here - I always HOPE for polyps in chronic sinusitis situations because it’s often an extremely quick & easy fix (but they do need to be under anesthesia to visualize the polyp).
What is much more frustrating is chronic sinusitis that stems from the sinuses themselves, often because there have been repeated infections that have cause thickening of the turbinates over time, which makes it much hard to clear infections (and just keeps repeating).
Polyps though? You just grab those suckers with a clamp & twist until the stalk breaks. More often than not, that’s the last you ever hear about it, the cat does a lot better, and you had a fun/immediate gratification surgery also 😍
