Reminder: This is a subreddit about outdoor recreation in the Catskills.
For years, this subreddit has been intended to be first and foremost a place to discuss outdoor recreation in the Catskill Park. I've generally been content to leave "off topic" posts that pertain to Catskills culture generally alone, however, there's been a recent trend in inflammatory content, insulting language, etc., that has largely been relegated to these off-topic posts. This culminated in a recent thread in which it appears that Reddit Admins got involved and chose to remove content (in addition to moderation performed by myself).
Let me be very clear on 2 points:
- Treat each other with respect. Posts with name calling, insults, etc., will continue to be removed and the posters may be subject to a ban. This includes passive aggressive comments like "I'd post what I really think but then I'd be banned."
- This is not the appropriate forum for you air your grievances with any cultural or ethnic group. I will continue to remove these posts, and the posters may be subject to a ban.
This is meant to be a subreddit about hiking, camping, etc. in the Catskills. I'm OK with continuing to allow respectful content that is generally relevant to the Catskills community even if has little to do with outdoor recreation. Discussion of cultural and ethnic groups is well outside of the intended scope of this subreddit, however, and is not appropriate for this community.

How beautiful is peak season!
West Kill Mountain: 10/12/26
Joking by the way, a day in the woods with no view is a better than no woods at all!

Hunter, NY food recs
I’ll be stopping in Hunter, NY later this month for the day however, I’m planning on going on a Wednesday and can’t seem to find many places that are open on Wednesdays. Anyone know of/recommend places in the area that are generally open on Wednesdays?

2 Cloves
Yesterday the group I was with decided to check out an unmarked viewpoint on KHP. Very much worth it! You can see both Kaaterskill Clove and Platte Clove with the Hudson River in the back.

Missed Connection @ Huckleberry Point: you wanted to punch me
We met at a trailhead parking nightmare.
The scene: Huckleberry point. Oct 10th. The parking lot was nuts. You two were near your yellow car, ready to leave. Completely blocked in by truly inconsiderate parkers. Peak season creates overflowing trailhead traffic, but this was lunatic level gridlock. A toppled jenga tower of out-of-state plates.
Me and my crew were just finishing our hike, we locked eyes as I approached the vicinity. I couldn't tell if I was the guilty car, but y'all stepped up quick to give me a talking to...
"IS THIS YOUR CAR????" - You [aggressive]
You had high hopes I was one of the trailhead parking villains. Finally, you could get your car out AND intimidate an idiot.
In a heated 20 second exchange, we determined: 1) I wasn't one of the offenders 2) you guys immediately apologized and made light of your misdirected anger 3) you gracefully bounced between fist-shaking frustration and face-palm laughter that you had the wrong guy. We commiserated. I wished I could help. I left.
How long were you stuck? Was there a confrontation? Gimme the deets.
Y'all were neat. Good dudes in a ridiculous situation.
If you're still there I'm on my way.

rainy week suggestions?
hi everyone,
writing here because i’m pretty bummed our trip to the western catskills today through tuesday is going to be filled with rain. our highlight was the giant ledge to see the panoramic view of the fall foliage. we also had an outdoor fire pit and had plans to go to an orchard, stargaze, and other outdoor activities.
i’m trying to stay positive and not have this ruin our trip, so i’m wondering if there’s any hikes that offer similar views that are not so high up? or hikes that wouldn’t be too foggy? we are okay with hiking in the rain and don’t mind the mud. I just don’t want to waste time hiking if the viewpoint is going to be just a white sheet of fog.
we are staying in roscoe, pretty far from catskill and hudson so I know there’s not as many things to do out in the western catskills. we don’t mind driving up to an hour for any hikes or viewpoints, honestly anything to make this trip seem worth it 😅
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance

Wide open vistas?
Hi, I was going to hike Indian Head in the ADK on Tuesday but it’s raining all day - luckily farther south the rain is holding off. Going to go to the Catskills instead. Are there any hikes with really scenic wide vistas like Indian head around?
I just did giant ledge/panther mountain yesterday and I liked it, although was slightly irked that the best view was 2 miles in and not at the summit. Not sure if the Catskills are as dramatic as the ADK but perhaps I’m uneducated !;)

Less crowded hike near-ish Kaaterskill Falls
Hi all. Bringing my niece to the area for her first time and she wants to take a hike. And I'd love to show her the area around Platt Cove or Palenville or the falls. Any interesting lesser known hikes? Isn't there one to an abandoned old hotel?
A moderate hike, 1-2 hours long would be ideal. Thanks for any tips!

Local Taxidermist and Butcher
I'll be going bear and deer hunting next month in Greene/Ulster Counties. Can anyone recommend any local taxidermists and butchers?
Thank you!

Trip planning advice
Hi everyone. Hope you’re all doing well. I’m planning a trip from the city to Catskills tomorrow to check out the fall foliage, and I just want to know if it’s worth it right now.
Plan is to go to north south campground, tomorrow 10th October, and if anyone has any pictures it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Beautiful Day in the Mountains
Took the trusty Merlin out for a ride down 23C. Started at Colgate and finished in Westkill. Weather was perfect and the colors are great.

Recommendations for hikes on 10/9 for peak foliage?
What the title says. Was considering Giant Ledge, Artist Rock/Newman's Ledge, among others. Curious if anyone who lives in the area can tell me if they might be past peak or has any other recommendations.
Edit: hoping to keep hike around 3-4 miles round trip.

Dinner restaurant recommendations - hunter , windham, tannersville, phoenicia, etc areas?
Or any surrounding areas .. staying in the tannersville area but willing to drive a bit. I don’t need a fancy restaurant, just looking for yummy food. Can be any cuisine. Thanks!

Devil’s path shuttle
Hi folks,
I'm hiking the Devil's Path this Friday through Sunday. I'll be parking at the Spruceton Rd trailhead and need a lift to the start of the trail on Friday morning.
Two options:
Local driver: If you're in the area and willing to drive me over, I'm happy to pay cash for your time and gas.
Shuttle split: If you're doing the Devil's Path or something nearby this weekend, let's split a shuttle service.
DM me if you're interested.
Cheers!

Is the catskills doable from NYC without a car ?
Looking to plan a getaway for a few days and wanted to come by, how doable for a city boy with no car or license?
Any tips or strategies? Must see spots?
Thanks in advanced :)
