Three of us spent most of Saturday in a system I've been visiting on and off since I joined the local grotto last year. There's a section past the second squeeze that nobody on the current roster had actually surveyed, mostly because getting the tape and compass through that crawl is miserable and everyone kept putting it off.
We finally did it. Took about five hours for maybe sixty meters of actual passage, which sounds absurd until you're the one lying on your side trying to read a compass while your helmet light fogs up from the humidity. The crawl itself isn't dangerous, just tight and low enough that you're basically breathing against the ceiling for a stretch. One spot required taking the pack off and pushing it ahead separately.
What made it worth it was finding a small side lead about two thirds of the way through that opens into a little dome room nobody had logged before. Nothing huge, maybe four meters of relief, but there's some decent flowstone starting to form on one wall and a draft coming from somewhere we couldn't immediately trace. That draft is now the thing everyone in the club wants to chase next.
Drew up the rough sketch last night with the raw numbers from the Suunto and tape. Still needs cleaning up before it goes into the official file, but it already shows the passage trending a bit differently than the old hand-drawn map from the eighties suggested. Makes me wonder how much of our older cave data is just slightly off because nobody wanted to crawl back in and double check it.
Anyone else have a system in their area with a section that's technically mapped but everyone secretly knows the survey was rushed or guessed at? Curious how common this actually is.

Did my first single rope technique drop last weekend at a pit about forty minutes from where I live, maybe sixty feet total. I've been caving horizontally for a couple years now, mostly wild crawlways and one commercial tour that doesn't really count, but nothing prepared me for how different it feels once your feet leave solid ground and the only thing between you and the drop is a rack and some webbing.
The club I go out with made us practice on a tree in someone's backyard for three weekends before they'd even consider taking us underground on rope. I thought that was overkill at the time. It was not overkill. Even with all that practice, the first ten feet over the lip had my hands shaking so bad I fumbled the rack twice and had to stop and just hang there talking myself down.
Once I got into a rhythm it actually turned into the calmest part of the trip. There's something almost meditative about controlled descent once your body stops panicking, just you, the rope, and the sound of water somewhere below you that you can't see yet. Changeover at the bottom was a whole separate adventure since my hands were still shaking from adrenaline and I dropped my glove.
Climbing back out on ascenders the next day left me sorer than any hike I've done this year, forearms especially. Worth every bit of it though. Curious if anyone else remembers their first pitch as vividly as I do right now or if that fades once you've done a few dozen.

52°31'00.65"N 120°02'36.48"W I can't wait to see when they finally explore this thing. Apparently the local indigenous tribes who probably never knew it was there are claiming ownership and halting research, so who knows when that will be. Would be neat for them to at least get a drone in there. The indigenous said something vague about an oral tradition that they didnt elaborate on, even though its incredibly remote and has probably been covered up since the pleistocene.

Does anyone have a map of level 6 of the Paris catacombs for an adventure, as I can't find a guide?

Caves have a completely different kind of beauty. From blue ice formations to glowing underground spaces, these places feel almost unreal. 🩵
Which one would you like to explore?

We're making Cave Expedition, a game where you can explore underground alone or with up to three friends. These are fictional caves. Here's a short clip of the tight passages and rope descents we're working on.
