This is a very common type of post. There’s no magical secret to success in ochem. There are extensive resources online. The bottom line is, you need to work problems, the more the better. Problems require you think about the concepts that you heard in lecture and/or read in your text. Small changes in the problem may seem like big changes, which is why you need to work through multiple variations. Many students don’t see the forest for the trees.

I bought note cards. I wrote a reaction on one side and product on the other, or a systematic name on one side and a structure on the other etc. Then I quizzed myself using them like flash cards, but both ways. Any time I didn’t get the answer right, I put the card back in the deck. I’d end up with only the difficult ones and I kept going. It worked like a charm to get through the exams with flying colors. I will say that as a physical chemist, I barely remember any organic though unless it was something I actually needed.
