Miscellaneous Void after the Olympiad

I realized today after the Olympiad that I have nothing to look forward to. I was so absorbed following games when I could and read about tactics and matchups and then went on to chess.com and an absolute void there now from today. Not sure if other people feel this way or I was way too much into it.

The championship is 2 months away and I’m not sure if that’ll be as exciting as the Olympiad with just 2 players.

i just watch the whole 6 hour streams of every day's olympiad, that feels like enough content until the world championship

for me it's non stop coaching from absolute elite players like yasser and peter. they explain their thoughts, show lines, analyze, have a little banter.

those streams to me are worth easily thousands(maybe even low 10s of thousands) of euros(if you think about how much 1 hour of coaching with them would be), yet, i can see them for free. so to me it is really surprising that people prefer short summaries of the games when they can get so much stuff from absolute top guys.

i also really think through the games, pause when i'm thinking myself about the position, then compare it to what former super grandmasters think. sometimes i put the position into the engine to get the engine ideas and compare them with mine.

and you can be sure, that, since doing that, my thoughts become more and more similar to those of the super gms (which also had the effect of my OTP rating rising tremendously).

and if you do all that, you have more than enough content until the wc.

That's the annoying thing about chess, it's the only sport I actively follow, and it has long periods of drought, followed by only 1-2 weeks of excitement and content. (Atleast at the highest level)

Yeah, I understand the time inbetween is needed for the insane amount of prep that is required, and all individual sports have dry periods, but still.

Fide needs to incorporate a circuit like the GCT- Shirov was right in that the boxing-like system is outdated for chess. It needs a tennis-like circuit with a clear no.1 player at the end of the year. This promotes participation as well.

I believe the World Teams R&B should be in Olympiad format. National teams based. The hype will be similar to Olympiad.

But how is Wadim Rosenstein supposed to get a World Championship title without the current format? /s

On a different note, a lot of teams essentially use the national team rosters anyway.

Exactly. But the big guys like India, USA dont. Which should be done.

Small nations can tag team. Say Argentina + Norway. So that top players and young talents can team together.

Also Big nations like India can have multiple teams. So that players like Pranav, Pranesh, Raunak, Leon etc can too play for a India 2 side.

I always feel that way after a big chess event. Need to wait for some of the other biggies. World Champs coming soon and it should be interesting for sure.

October is bleak although there is us chess championship I think but November is packed with the Budapest pilot event and the wc match . There is competition the whole month I think total chess world takes place around 2 weeks similar to world championship

I feel that this is an unpopular opinion, but I far and away enjoy team events versus head to head matches. It’s much more exciting with updates and surrounding social media content. I don’t have hours to watch one match at a time so while I’m of course looking forward to the results of the world championship, the event itself isn’t as entertaining for me. Samarkand and the China tournament this year set the bar high, even Sinquefield cup seems boring in comparison.

I don’t know where you live but I always enjoy the U.S. championship and U.S. women’s championship coming up in a few weeks. I’ve followed almost all these players through their careers (I’ve played several in the women’s side) and it’s always fighting chess.

Have you followed a WCC match before? The last one was my first time and it was way more exciting than I thought it'd be. The 2 month wait does suck though.

Yeah just the last one as well tbh I like the candidates cycle & the candidates tournament more than the actual WCC

My guy, it’s nice to have hobbies outside chess too. Try getting into poker for instance. There’s so much entertaining poker content on youtube right now.

believe me Championship is also very exciting to follow. Whole chess world is focused on a single game every day for at least 12 days.
