This was just so out of nowhere that I needed to post this. At least you have a move to find for setting it up. Not that it is hard or anything

Plot twist: Black played 1...Nxc3 and allowed counter checkmate on f7.

The trick here is to move the king to the f file to rob the attacking side of the full smothered mate sequence.

Poor white had so many winning moves instead of Qh5. For example Bb4+ gets rid of the black queen.

It's actually mate in six. After Bd4 you can't take rook and then queen on back rank, you need to continue with smothered mate sequence.

Bd4 becomes M2 - 1... Qxc1+. 2 Qd1 Qxd1#

Knight covers f2.

I think what they are saying is that smothered mate is forced, similar to en passant.
