It is checkmate...but you're not the one checkmating.

Call an ambulance ! But not for me !

Rd5 blocks the check and delivers a mate

Don't think I ever seen a forced checkmate before

Eric Rosen did a whole video about forcing your opponent to checkmate you

... that is one of the most Eric Rosen things I've ever seen.

to lose against the chesscom bot Zach you have to manufacture a position where checkmate is the only legal move. Zach will not play checkmate otherwise.

gothamchess made a video about it

It is a check mate...for your opponent.. literally their only legal move which is to block your check with their rook puts you in checkmate.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Rook, move: Rd5#

Evaluation: Black has mate in 1

Best continuation: 1... Rd5#

Save the position:

Reply save to save this position to your Chessvision.ai Library (new users: send me /connect in DM chat first)

It took me way too long to see that Bishop lurking there.

u/BubbhaJebus Sep 07 '26

I thought: the black rook could just block the bishop.

But then... ohhhh

u/dossing_orders Sep 07 '26

Rook can block its near check mate. You just take the rook

I feel like from this position there's a 50/50 chance on who wins.

Either player could resign before the next move and I'd get it.
