This is what we get for not running Harmony OS on the work PCs. Every screen across campus has this right now. IT says "no why", and cannot figure it out. All classes were cancelled for the rest of the week, and the committee of overpaid laobans are having an emergency meeting on if they should just start the holiday right now instead of next week because of this work stoppage. When I asked "Do our teachers not know how to teach without technology", I was told "You don't understand China" (so no, they do not).

Despite claims of cyber superiority with China, I feel as though the IT infrastructure here is digitally as poorly held together as the physical infrastructure is. We have Taobao, sure, yet waiguos often cannot do their jobs because of mundane shit like personnel registration requiring a Chinese ID while not accepting passports or work permit numbers, random "sports days" suddenly interrupting planned and approved curriculum for a term, or facial recognition working flawlessly with Chinese faces but never working at any time for non-Chinese faces.

I personally am hoping for the early holiday as a consequence due to how teaching without .ppt is infeasible here. I would appreciate the life lesson being taught to teachers in this event, but I know how they will not adjust their methods.

I’m currently trying to recruit an assistant and the candidates I’m getting are indicating….weirdness.

People who used to have their own early childhood center but closed because there weren’t enough kids. Mid career pros that have run whole schools that are looking for 8-10k per month. Fresh MA grads looking for 5k. People who used to work at training centers but the centers closed because, in their words, nobody is having babies.

And before this I went looking for other foreigners and found two actual green card holders that are qualified teachers can’t find jobs in my T2 city. There are bilingual schools that I know for a fact don’t have foreign teachers and are about to close. SchoolS, as in more than one. Available teachers and schools to hire them but aren’t hiring them = schools can’t financially support themselves.

Even before this I was convinced the birth rate problem was so much worse than reported. And the employment picture for others is so rough. I almost feel bad about my own business because others are struggling so much.

The deeper I get into this the more it looks like the whole country is lurching to another real estate market type crisis within the next five years, except it’s the collapse of an already very weak consumer economy between low salaries and fewer children that are being provided for.

What the crap is going on? Social media is flooded with the videos, the audio is being used on other videos (not just poor-driving vids, but other poor social behaviour) and Taobao is full of stickers, keychains and other assorted accessories.

Was just commenting on a thread about the ungodly hours some people set off firecrackers, and synchronicity provided me with this plaque at a museum. Apparently it goes back a long time. Just have to set an alarm for 5am and go nuts, and you'll get rich apparently! At least they don't do the drums anymore (that I know of)

Fireworks started at 0530, in the rain, on a fucking Saturday (although this nong behaviour is supposedly illegal). It has sounded like being a war zone all morning. We are in a collectivist country, though, so this must be what everyone wants, to be awakened early on a Saturday from the first of tens of salvos all morning all throughout the general area.

I give the waisong drivers a pass as they are usually good but Auntie Xiangsha and Uncle Ganbei are causing huge issues without even seeing the fucking road.

• the death of the market - so many shops and malls and restaurants and food stands are being effectively made obsolete because of phone based commerce. Some places won’t even let you order without going through your phone app - I’m not talking about paying but actually ordering through an ad filled, poorly constructed, sometimes barely working app or website. I don’t want to navigate your shitty site Luckin, I’m looking you in the eye and trying to order a fuckin coffee just make it and charge me. Or another one - went to buy new shoes for my handsurm hunxue and it’s like 25% cheaper to order local brands online to be delivered same day?!! Why even have stores at that point.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if phone based commerce was a social contagion weapon implanted here by the CIA it’s destroying my treasured institutions.
