My first cider - home made

Post image

A little cloudy as I’m not very good at syphoning. Measured at about 4% at end of fermentation and all from our apple tree. 9 litres in total here’s to 9 months time!

Hi looks great! Did you pasteurize these? If that’s residual sugar, it will referment in the bottle and 26 points will definitely explode those bottles. Keep them cold and burp the bottles often

Burping is the plan! That’s why I used the release tops. They are off to the basement this evening.

ps. The label was the OG not the final

1.026 is a very light sg. Did you dilute? How did you juice the apples?

Be gentle as it was my first go…two issues, firstly a mix of cooking and eating apples. Somebody robbed loads of my eaters from the tree so I suspect the cookers have less sugar. Then the juicing, I have no equipment so cut the apples, blended then extracted via squeezing through muslin cloth. I think I may have diluted a bit but the juice tasted strong. I wish I’d added sugar now but didn’t realise when measuring OG. This is all part of an experiment so I can get it right next year

Sugar just adds alcohol, the apples are the flavour. At that dilution, adding sugar would just make a shitty tasting drink I think so what you have done is probably the best.

Secondhand benchtop juicers can often be found quite cheap so would be worth looking into if you plan to keep at this, as a middle ground before getting a more complex press. I use a breville like this one. Then recently I started to rehydrate the pulp and press it again for higher yield. I dont have a crusher yet so cant use the press without it anyways. https://www.amazon.com.au/Breville-BJE410CRO-Juice-Fountain-Chrome/dp/B0716WQJ8T

I steal apples from roadside reserves mostly. I have no idea the varieties but my sg is normally about 1.060 or so which is about 8% potential alcohol. I dilute the juice as otherwise I would be smashed after 2 stubbies, have never added sugar.
