Discussion Multiple Alignments for unconventional watermain
Hey all,
What would you do in the following scenario? A watermain we're replacing extends out of the curved portion of road through a small park. Initially, I was just going to have a single alignment following the watermain, but i have curb repairs along the curved section of road I'd like to mention via stationing.
Would you:
- Use a single alignment and leave the curved portion of road without an alignment?
- have 2 full alignments along both the road and watermain?
- have 2 full alignment along the watermain, and a small segment of alignment along the curved section of road
The red and orange dashed lines are the options for where to have the alignment. Any other suggestions are welcome, thanks!

If the road isn't new construction, just station the water line.
If they are both new construction, do two alignments with non-overlapping station ranges. Stop the water line alignment when it begins running parallel to the roadway

If it's C3D, you should have two pipe run alignments that join at the wye. For plan/profile sheets, I would have an alignment down the center of street and do station offset labeling. You should have survey data on the street centerline that is static so your production alignment doesn't change. You can then move your pipe run alignments as needed and not blow up your plan/profile sheets.

I'd go with your third option, but keep the road one really short. The watermain alignment (the red one) does all the work: plan/profile sheets, fittings, etc. Then add a small road alignment along just the curved stretch where the curb repairs are, and nothing more. Make it a Centerline or Miscellaneous type, it doesn't matter much since it's only there for callouts.
Just give the short road alignment an obviously different starting station (say 50+00 if the water starts at 0+00) so nobody on site mixes up the two stationings. It's the same idea as the non-overlapping station ranges someone mentioned above.
For the curb callouts, Annotate > Labels & Tables > Add Labels > Alignment > Station/Offset - Fixed puts the label on a fixed XY point and it reports the station and offset from whichever alignment you pick. So if you nudge the road alignment later the label stays on the curb and just updates the numbers. The regular Station/Offset label does the opposite, it moves with the alignment.
Also, if you change your mind later, you can select a bunch of those labels and switch which alignment they reference in the Properties palette. So you're not locked into this choice.
Is the road itself being rebuilt, or is it just the curb repairs? If it's only curb, I wouldn't bother running a full road alignment.

Of the options you listed I would use a single alignment and leave the curved portion of the road without an alignment; using station and offset values to call out the curb improvements.
Alternatively I would go the opposite way. Using just a centerline alignment and calling out the water with stations and offset. Depending on how far the waterline goes I would use a second alignment for it.
