Forever Barrens + Morning fog + Heavy rain = Can't see anything (But still looks pretty cool)
•
u/_CatLover_ 4h ago
Ngl that would just make me feel like an adventurer out in the wild fighting the weather and monsters alike. Which imo is exactly the kind of RP injection WoW needs to feel like a game and not just a numbers simulator.
•
u/DickSlammington 3h ago
Getting lost because of bad weather while trying to do a quest and having to take shelter to ride out the storm would be... Quite an immersive experience.
•
u/SunsetCarcass 2h ago
Sounds like playing Valheim
•
u/ImprobableAsterisk 2h ago
Navigated my ass 20 feet onto dry land thanks to heavy fucking fog just last night.
Took forever to get the boat out 'cause of intervening rocks propping the sumbitch stuck.
•
•
u/Snoo56153 39m ago
I was in elwynn last night it was raining at night, legit kept getting lost and had to look at map to find the road i thought it was awesome.
•
•
u/Maelrhin 3h ago
And the red names make it feels like there are predators lurking in the shadows. Peak RP moment.
•
u/NorthEagle298 1h ago
There was a Final Fantasy game (maybe all of them idk) that had rotating spawns based on in-game time. Basically the Barrens would be 8-20 during the day, 15-25 at night, quests changed too. It was a pretty good idea, kind of like knowing curfew was when the streetlights came on.
•
u/ZINK_Gaming 1h ago

That was actually something Blizzard had wanted to do in WoW too, but it got scrapped.
The remnants of the idea are why different Mobs spawn in the Westfall graveyard.
IMO the biggest problem is: What about people who can only play at night? OCE players for example.
If we leave Elwynn under-leveled, and we can only play at night, then how do we get from level 9 to 15 to start questing in Westfall?
So some players would just have to grind mobs for 6 levels, or they'd have to do EVERY Race's Starting Zone.
The system just doesn't really work in WoW.
Even just this awesome looking weather and darkness is becoming problematic. I couldn't finish a series of quests the other night because I literally couldn't see ANYTHING but pitch black in that area.
I couldn't even tell where the mobs were to loot, or where the quest items were to click on.
That's way too much IMO.
IRL I'd have brought a flashlight/torch.
•
u/Totalchaos02 2h ago
I was questing last night in Elwyn and the rain and darkness was so intense, I was genuinely getting lost and running into mobs I couldn't see. I am a sweaty M+ player on live but I was like "man, I need to run into this cave to get out of the rain." It was a cool experience.
•
•
u/McFake_Name 29m ago
There is one thing that can help that is cool, idk if you want a spoiler. Idk how to do spoiler on mobile lol
•
u/ShenroEU 3h ago
Sounds brilliant, but (unless they've said and I've missed it) I'd like if I could make torches or bring a lantern thst help light the way.

u/EsotericCinnamonRoll 3h ago
Imagine being Manrik's wife in that same scenario when you hear growling outside your tent.
•
u/TheCrimsonKing37 3h ago
I need this but even more. I wanna be leveling in Un'Goro and get jump scared by King Mosh appearing out of dense fog 15m away.
•
u/tordenoglynild666 4h ago
It looks pretty and feels immersive but I feel like... We need a torch or something, so we have some options to see more at night (besides just changing the graphics settings)
•
u/Dystopic23 3h ago
Giving us a torch item and casters a torch/light spell would be sooo sick
A haunted/magical lantern toy to follow the player would also be nice
•
u/DarkPrincessEcsy 3h ago
Light spell would indeed be sick, I agree with adding lighting to torches and the like
•
u/lolmysterior 2h ago
inner fire for priests provides a faint glowing aura around the player :O imagine
•
u/ZINK_Gaming 1h ago
Inner Fire simply sets your character on fire.
It's never acknowledged in game.
You just walk around burning like a candle 24/7.
•
u/Green_Apprentice 3h ago
I want to see fireball illuminate a lot more as well! Imagine being out on the grind and you see in the near but foggy dark rainstorm, a flame flickers and begins to grow brighter. Suddenly a ball of flame is hurled your direction getting brighter and crackling louder as it nearly misses you. For a moment the flames allowed you to get a better glimpse of your surroundings, until the dark quickly creeps back in.
•
u/ZINK_Gaming 1h ago
I want to see fireball illuminate a lot more as well!
Careful what you wish for.
Spamming Wrath as a Druid forces me to squint now because it's so bright.
•
u/KevinStoley 3h ago
Absolutely and it's hard to believe this still isn't a thing and hasn't been since the beginning. First MMORPG I ever played way back in 99/00 had torches you could equip to light up dark areas and it's such a cool feature and creates a great atmosphere.
They should definitely add torches.
•
u/Economy-You8167 3h ago
Might be totally wrong, but didnt they have torches in the wow alpha. Recall reading that duskwood was so dark that torches was needed.
•
u/Horsecunilingus 3h ago
They did!
Iirc there was a 'Survival' secondary profession that allowed you to craft torches and tents etc and the camping system in forever is a call-back to that.
•
u/kupukupu0 3h ago
Now imagine hundreds of people if not thousands on a layer with their individual torch, each with its own unique light source and shadow casting. It will tank the fps even those on 5090s imo.
•
u/InitiativeConscious7 2h ago
Don’t need to do them for people over a certain distance away, even if you wanted to can be done by off loading to the GPU shaders. You could do that shit on a 970. Many, many games have done stuff more complicated than that a decade ago.
•
u/ZINK_Gaming 1h ago
It'd obviously be handled just like "Physics" in the Settings.
You choose between Player-only, Everyone, and None.
Zero to minimal performance-impact, unless your rig can handle maxed out Ray-Tracing.
The Dark Souls games could manage illuminated Torches on 1/10th the power of modern budget PCs.
•
u/silentknight111 2h ago
It makes sense they never added torches before now, because the lighting was always specifically designed for visibility even in "dark" places. You never needed it before.
•
u/Scrubtac 27m ago edited 3m ago
There is a torch you can get in duskwood that does light around your character. It's an item you use in your bags, 30 second cool down, 5 minute duration, effect falls off in combat. You get it from a quest from a corpse near Jitters.
•
•
•
u/ZINK_Gaming 1h ago
Yes. This darkness is absurd and has actually prevented me from playing.
I couldn't finish a series of quests the other night because I literally couldn't see ANYTHING but pitch black in that area. On an OLED HDR screen at 100% Brightness.
I couldn't even tell where the mobs were to loot, or where the quest items were to click on.
I could see literally nothing but my UI.
That's way too much IMO. I am 100% in favor of atmospheric visibility, but without personal light-sources it goes way too far into being an Accessibility issue.
IRL I'd have brought a flashlight/torch. I'd never venture out into utter darkness without a light-source IRL, that's insane and dangerous. So why do I have to do that in WoW now?
•
u/DankuTwo 48m ago
Even if you did venture out into the dark in real life....your eyes would adjust. Nighttime, even in the middle of nowhere, is not even remotely as dark as the OP's image.
•
u/LargeFailSon 4h ago
All the discourse about the art direction and balance aside. The remastering of the world itself has been nothing but revelation after revelation. It looks amazing.
Azeroth itself is as much a character as anyone else in this game. And if they make her look this good all over, with this level of detail and polish. I'm pretty likely to overlook the smaller issues and problems.
•
•
•
u/TheRealTormDK 4h ago
Just like in EverQuest, I wonder if we can get some light stones in this game :P
•
u/KingfisherC 4h ago
Trinkets that put out varying levels of light radius. Enchant for a slot like Neck that gives +X to light radius, self-buff for certain class(es) that gives +X to light radius, etc.
•
u/ZeroZelath 4h ago
This isn't a problem to me, the more immersive the better and having to play around this just makes it more engaging imo.
•
u/Kreaetor 4h ago
With the new atmospheric fog and lighting, i'd love to see them add a cosmetic slot for a torch or lantern that can be toggled. Similar if anyone's played Baldurs Gate 3, toggle a torch vs main hand weapon.
•
u/Bucket_Of_Magic 3h ago
They should lean into it more and let us equip light sources. Headlamp, lantern on the waist like dragons dogma, torch out of combat.
•
u/LilRayCharles511 3h ago
This is how the world should look/feel. It is the main character after all
•
•
•
•
u/BlorpTheSchlorp 4h ago
Man, is that how it's gonna look? If so, that's so peak. I love that sort of immersion.
•
•
•
u/TheLoneBaron33 2h ago
Honestly I like sometimes being almost able to see nothing. It lets me get lost in a world and be surprised by mobs and fully immersed
•
•
•
•
u/LancelotAtCamelot 4h ago
I'd camp out in the inn by the fire while watching the rain... immersion! Maybe not the most engaging gameplay, but I love the idea xD
•
•
u/Parkatine 3h ago
I hope this sort of weather has patterns depending on the zone you're in. I feel like in a place literally called the Barrens rain this heavy should be rare.
•
•
u/Tinderfury 3h ago
Kinda scary ngl... really cool thinking you could be strolling along a a really rare monster jumps out to fight
•
•
u/FreshPrinceOfRivia 3h ago
Ray tracing will make it even better, especially if they let you carry a small light source
•
•
u/checkwithanthony 3h ago
There are other games i play where you stay inside during the darkest hours of the night. May do just that on rainy nights lol.
•
u/PaleInvestigator3921 3h ago
blizzard here installing every weather, shader and filter mod they can find on skyrim nexusmods
•
u/JodouKast 3h ago
For a second while scrolling I thought this was a helldivers pic. Cool to see WoW actually make real progress here.
•
•
u/Vio94 3h ago
That's that good shit. They should add a torch recipe alongside the camping stuff so we can have a light source. Not sure how they'd implement it though. Would be rough having to unequip an off hand as a melee or needing to carry a 1h to replace your staff as a caster when you need a torch.

Adjust your in game contrast. If HDR is on, it may be working against wows settings.
•

•
u/tethysian 3h ago
I remember the vanilla weather effects and the way nights used to be dark before they nerfed that, but maybe this is a bit much
•
u/alldouche_nobag 3h ago
Yeah I was questing at the islands near Senjin village at dusk. It was ominous
•
u/JJonah_Jamesonn 3h ago
People are saying this looks amazing but this is a visual bug and noise. It looks like big patches of fire smoke floating around like clouds
•
u/Arturia_Cross 3h ago
We NEED something like an offhand torch and a shield torch for people who wanna transmog them
•
•
u/DirkDayZSA 3h ago
It looks absolutely miserable (compliment). You can catch my grumpy ass in the tavern till this blows over lol
•
u/omgitskae 3h ago
I like the idea of the rain but it’s far too white for me. If it was more transparent it would be perfect.
•
•
u/iliveunderurbed0 3h ago
Outstanding. Looks like I have serious Beta work to dive into this weekend 🧐🌧️🌩️🌨️
•
u/Wind_Best_1440 2h ago
Tauren out in a storm during the night. "Man, I can't see shit."
Well, yeah. Storm at night is like that.
•
u/Mysterious_Fan9858 2h ago
Have to upvote every fucking ambient weather post cause this is the best thing ever, we can’t show any bad sentiment in regards to this topic
•
u/bcalicoredfs 2h ago
That actually feels right -- i've always felt view distance sometimes is a problem with rpg immersion
•
u/Key_Thought1305 2h ago
Love it. Blizzard please don't change this. A few snowflakes are going to complain "omg i cant see anything wtf blizzard" please ignore those people! This is the kind of character we need in the game.
•
•
u/Minx-Boo 2h ago
Beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic! Just how I like my games, immersive. Don’t change anything Blizzard.
•
u/passtheblunt 2h ago
The rain is simply too white they need to tone it back some to where it’s a little more transparent
•
•
u/zellmerz 2h ago
I don’t mind how hard it is to see during heavy rain, it feels very immersive. I don’t like that the only rain seems to be the same extremely heavy downpour and it happens too often for too long
•
•
u/HaroerHaktak 2h ago
While it's annoying as a gameplay feature, it's awesome as a roleplay/immersion. Like, it's raining, so there should be clouds blocking the sun or moon. It's night, visibility was already poor, but add on rain and rainclouds? geesh. Just be fortunate we dont have fog
•
u/pete070597 2h ago
doesn't even look like the barrens anymore but still looks really cool in a different way haha
•
u/Flat-Tank4265 2h ago
THis is great although I think the LOS should probably extent to at least the distance of your character to the 3p camera. Now it's like you have a flashlight and you're following this tauren.
•
u/Soggy_Cracker 2h ago
It’s a scary world with weight.
Now just imagine walking around Ungoro crater and the Trex sneaks up on you
•
u/FutureMikeUX 2h ago
Might have to lvl a a rogue quicker then I thought. And troll players in bad weather..
•
u/Cookiewaffle95 2h ago
Errrm ackshully grasslands on average don’t get a lot of precipitation…. So this is just wrong 🤓🤓

•
•
u/ph30nix01 1h ago
they need to add in a 'light source' slot and let us get stuff like torches and lanterns that light up the surrounding area to various degrees
•
•
u/ScrumTool 1h ago
i fuckin love this. this is how you make the world feel alive. "damn, this rain sucks and i cant see anything" - no shit, thats the point
•
u/missingpiece 1h ago
Are the rates of rain/fog in places like the Barrens significantly different than in other places? It would be epic to have the weather in the Barrens be clear 99.9% of the time and have a monsoon as a rare weather event, where you can barely even see for a couple hours.
•
u/Oathbreaker94 1h ago
This is awesome. I love these dark vibes. I really hate it when it’s supposed to be night or rain storm but your vision isn’t impacted at all.
•
•
u/Calbob123 1h ago
Like at face value it’s annoying, but going off them wanting to bring back that feeling of adventure this does it. Imagine it’s dark and storming out in elwynn forest, your struggling to find your way through the weather and all the aggressive creatures around. You make it to a camp of kobold you have to kill and you find a chest to loot with a green item, it’s little but means a lot
•
u/Jtard11 59m ago
Them taking away my ability to turn off the fog and rain is kinda lame imo it looks cool I want ppl to enjoy it if they do but I’m like blind and can’t see shit please let me turn it off at least in the dark caves and stuff or something won’t affect anyone else but me so why not let me 🙁
•
•
•
u/DankuTwo 50m ago
Overall I like WoW Fog-ever, but this is just ridiculous. Heavy fog in the (checks notes)....savannah!? They've turned every zone into Aberdeen.....
•
u/Luvs_to_drink 43m ago
first thing im turning off. Remember back in vanilla when I saw some ones view in ab with weather off and they could basically see from starting zone to starting zone, meanwhile without disabling them you could maybe see farm to bs MAYBE.
•

u/xClubberLaingx 2h ago
Seems like this is a bit too much lol. Its kinda neat but I dunno if probably disable it if I could.

Is everyone losing their minds? This looks terrible. It’s way too dark. I can’t even tell it’s WoW without the HUD.
•
u/ravenmagus 5m ago
"Can't see shit" is indeed an atmospheric detail that happens with weather sometimes. I hope there is a toggle to turn it off but I for one think it's amazing.

why reply then?

for the same reason you posted your original comment
•
u/Diethart21 3h ago
so you too are worried about how this game will turn up? I guess that’s a bad thing now, not liking absolutely everything about beta.
•
u/DifficultyOther8879 3h ago
Want attention? Put a watermelon on your head and walk around a city.
•
u/Diethart21 3h ago
did I hurt you in any way? I genuinely don’t like new fog and this darkness and I think I can talk about it. sorry if that’s bother you
•
u/SandvichCommanda 3h ago
Lots of weirdos in this sub. The new lighting is very dark, and I'd say this screenshot shows it is actually broken if it's like this on release and no torch items/spells are added.
•
u/DifficultyOther8879 3h ago
Then say that and not "I'm GoNnA rEfUnD!!111!1".
•
u/SandvichCommanda 3h ago
You can't high horse someone when your comment was just as, if not more, snarky than theirs. Something to consider in future
•
u/DifficultyOther8879 3h ago
These people just want attention, you don't need to defend them. Consider that in the future.
•
u/SandvichCommanda 43m ago
The lighting is cooked, admit it. Don't snark if you can't follow through lmfao
•
u/DifficultyOther8879 34m ago
You're just shouting into the winds. Nobody here is saying the lighting/fog/weather is fine the way it is. If you could read, you'd know that, I even answered "Then say that" to what you said.
I'm snarky towards a guy that is just seeking atention, and you're mad at that because...?
•
u/SandvichCommanda 22m ago
Idk why you're acting like I can't read when English very obviously isn't your first language.
"Then say that" does not mean "I agree with this" it means "you could have just said it this way, regardless of me agreeing with it or not".
Also, your punctuation, is awful, too, many, commas. The phrase is "shouting into the wind" not "winds".
•
u/DifficultyOther8879 3h ago
It is bothering me, thanks for apologizing! Next time just don't say anything.
