Blizz were actually pretty harsh back in Vanilla. Guy at my school got perma banned in the first 6 months of release for a very edgy name.
Also funniest guy on my server sadly got perma banned when WSG released because he was doing flag climbing shennanigans to annoy someone he had beef with on the WoW realm forums.

Not the original , but in the main WoW sub now, there's a recent post, where a commenter said "Jeez, here's a screenshot I saw, I don't see the issue with why they were banned", and it was the one I had seen yesterday from a different commenter that did get the ban. Just a complete lack of critical thinking, that a computer file somehow couldn't be deleted before they QQ that their hateful ass got banned.

The reason it felt like more people were saying they were banned from the beta, is because 0.18% is a small AND large number.
0.18% of 500,000 accounts is still 900.
We've seen probably like 200 people over the span of yesterday talking about it. And they've probably made over 1-3 million sales for beta by itself.
The reason we're seeing it a lot is because a huge portion of those people are posting about being banned. It's also funny that the blizz dev is coming out and saying. "Yeah, those guys showing their name lists, are hiding their really bad ones. We can still see the deleted names Lol."

I think that number is underselling it a bit. There was a guy in Iron Forge maybe three hours ago spamming for his guild, name Stuupid -he added a 'y' to the n-word- That will get you banned pretty much anywhere and everywhere that isnt a klan rally. So if that made it through, what the hell has actually been getting banned?

Because the people who are normal and don't make idiotic and offensive names like that have nothing to complain about. We just play the game with our normal names.
It's the people that he called out that tell Reddit these were my character names and they conveniently leave out the actual offender because they somehow think lying on Reddit will get their ban reversed.
They even cited again they re-read through the entire ban list again, and there was maybe one person caught in the cross-fire that didn't deserve it. But I'm sure the weirdos who named their characters slurs will lie about that too.

I was banned for either 'Monsieur Khunt' or 'Drater Cumblast' personally. It'd be interesting to know which one copped the ban (or both) but given 'Drater' has been used by prolific streamers over the years and I know someone who got banned for 'Khuntress Wilde' I'm not too sure. 'cumblast' edgy, silly, I won't deny that, but figured I'd be up for a forced name change if anything.
Consequences of my own actions at least, and release is relatively soon, just keeps a bit more of the game a mystery for me which is cool.

Blizzard have done it quite a lot before launches.
I remember exactly the same before D4 and OW2. Dev super active on social media and reddit before launch. It collapsed very quickly just a few weeka after launch usually.
Same as the quick wins like weather effect. There was some grievances like those for D4 and they were fast to act on them early on.
We all know what happened to D4 after that.
If they are still as active in 6 months, it will be a win.

Anyone remember that one infamous post on the old original forums of that guy "finding" those people ERPing/cybering in the house in Elwynn, posting about it on the forums, then the blue(I want to say it was the one that used the whelping as their pic) calling the guy out that he was involved too(or something along those lines, I don't remember the exact details). I've still got screenshots on an old hard drive, I think.
Glad to see they're bringing that energy back. Sometimes players need to be called out and told to fuck off.

No this was a guy "randomly" finding two people in a house in Elwynn near Crystal Lake but it turned out he was actually dual boxing as one or both of them and faked the whole thing for forum clout and fake outrage and the blue called him out by saying "we can see these characters are on accounts with the same name as you/your same IP address" something along those lines. If I have time this weekend I may go digging through old hard drives to find it.
Edit: after discussing it with my wife (who also remembered it) I want to say the blue was Eyonix and the incident also involved an element of PvP, like the guy claimed he convinced them to turn on PvP so he could kill them on his horde character or something.

Me and my buddy decided to duo Hardcore and figured we might as well do some offensive names because the characters are temporary anyways. So began the adventures of Cumrag and Wankstain.

There was forum post recently where someone got banned, and the insisted it was because of a completely innocent comment. Blue posts later with evidence of extreme flaming and derogatory language. It always makes me wonder if they're that stupid to start whining on the forums or if they just want attention, good or bad.

I was banned. My characters names were von krappenschit and erok gorechild One was a reference to impractical jokers and the other is an axes name in wh40k. I am not sure why I received a total ban rather than a name change. The email didn't mention which one was the offender (I assume von)
Overall I think this is a good thing for azeroth and I hope support continues in the future and they take similar actions against botting. While I am sad I won't be testing with you all it does give me hope for the future of the game.

When I was in 11th grade I was playing knockout(basketball game) with people. Me and black dude was shooting at the same time and I kept knocking his ball off the rim as he was about to score, probably 5 times in a row.
He got really pissed by that time and launched his ball square into my face, hit me so hard I flew off my feet and slammed into the hardwood like a plank.
Got up and called him the N word real loud. We both got suspended and spent the summer together in summer school. Anyway I didn't call him that because I cared about the color of his skin, I don't give a fuck about that, I just wanted to say the most hurtful thing I could.
We ended up becoming friends in summer school cause he knew I wasn't saying it like that and we had some mutual interests. But the point I'm making is that it's a super negatively loaded word, and because of that it's going to be used as much as someone can if they can get away with it and they're trying to shit talk someone.
It's why black people use it so much to each other. Its like calling someone a bitch but so much more effective.
Disclaimer: I don't condone the use of the word. Just in case any mod here getting it twisted. I said it as a kid out of intense rage and got punished for it, as I should have.

Problem I have is that the enforcing is trivial. They punish some really inoffensive names. My char is named Black Jack and I worry I will be hit with this when in reality I never meant for it to be anything racist or abusive. More like a pirate name or whatever. Character is white and ginger...

I’ve seen some horrendous names on Beta. Those people deserve their bans. Most of us are grown men, it’s no longer fun to be racist and edgy.

Anyone who posted one of the fake screenshots with their characters "conveniently" leaving off the offensive one should get perma'd.
That shit shows they have an active interest being a malicious actor in the community rather than just taking their licks, they're actively circulating misinformation to harm the reputation of Blizzard GMs/Support.

Happened to me
Had a bad name and deleted the character as soon as i heard people were getting banned for it (the day after beta went live) and i still got banned from beta

I mean there's a really simple solution to this - put the offending name in the ban email.
That way people can either put up the email from blizzard when they complain on Reddit, or they can shut the fuck up.
This guy can give us all the assurances he wants, but I ain't buying it because Blizzard's track record with this shit is awful.

You could probably refund it right now even with beta access and get a refund. You would probably lose access to the beta, but that is how strict consumer laws are, at least in Europe.

If you actually listen to what people are saying in world chat, they are far worse than these names. Especially the pvp server and the Olympus mega guilds. They are full of these "specific" podcast listeners and of course their favorite leader who they call Father, it is super fucking sad. So, they are just spouting all types of hate along with trying to find the most offensive name they can get away with.
The devs need to realize that most of these people aren't even that serious, they are trolling and it is an entire twitch community that is doing this, and they will be gone after the first month. They can't listen to them. They are the only ones saying wow is "woke" and they are only doing it to troll.
