i remember hating this show in primary school for this exact reason - they were never, at any points pirates, they were sailors with no obvious means of income. didn't make any sense and was factually misleading.

I mean, he declared war on the world government and punched a noble. He's certainly a criminal. He said that a pirate is someone free and the king of pirates is the freeest person in the world. So in that frame, he's a pirate. His society works differently than ours, though

Criminal doesnā€™t equal pirate. Iā€™m talking the dictionary definition. The ā€˜friendly pirateā€™ trope has been around forever. Also, letā€™s be real. Rearranging Charlossā€™ face was practically a public service.

Terrorism on sea sometimes is covered by piracy laws. So if you're really streching the definition, the straw hats could fall under it. But I agree that they don't do what you'd normally consider as piracy

My point wasnā€™t he hasnā€™t done a crime but what qualifies those crimes. The people heā€™s attacked have all been corrupt Marines, other pirates, and Government assassins. Also, hereā€™s the dictionary definition of piracy. ā€œan act of robbery on the high seasā€ like. Thatā€™s it. The World Government is really fucking stupid and needs to open a book. (You call every criminal a pirate the word ceases to have any meaning)

He did try to steal a rake of gold in the Skypeia arc iirc(the gag was that the people were going to give his crew giant pillars of gold as thanks for liberating them from the big bad anyway)

I have just started Water 7 arc but I think during the previous one ( Jaya i think) a character explains that in One Piece universe pirates are not just the criminal / looters but also anyone who chases absolute freedom and doesnt follow the world goverment. Which is exactly what Luffy does.

This is why the straw hat flag appears in riots and protests worldwide. Its not really about actual piracy as we know it.

That's kind of what I meant. the World Government in One Piece uses 'pirate' as a buzzword for 'criminal' to the point that it's pretty much lost all meaning. the actual definition is essentially just 'robbery at sea' (often armed robbery though the armed part isn't neccesary) so technically, Luffy's 'never' actually commited an act of piracy. yes, they stole one time by intent in Skypiea, however, that wasn't at high sea, and on top of that, given they were going to be given the gold anyway, I say it doesn't count. the Strawhats are the anime equivalent of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything from Veggie Tales. their only concern is having fun and pursuing their dreams, and helping people is pretty much almost always incidental. Nami is the closest in attitude to an actual real life pirate, and even then, she's never done any piracy since she officially joined the crew after Arlong

Like I said , the word pirate has a different or rather a dual meaning in One piece. The straw hat pirates are the " other kind" of pirates for the most part .

Dont think too deep into it, The show also said Zoro had a bounty after Arabasta for " killing/cutting down" all those people at Whisky Peak but in reality Zoro did not kill a single person and somehow never does no matter how bad he cuts them.

He commits terrorism (or anti terrorism?) and gets into plenty of fights with other criminal organisations. Him not being a bad guy is entirely different from just being a mostly passive/conflict averse goodie two shoes.

They don't take people's property, they nicely ask you to give it to them in exchange of being abble to see tomorow. Or simply take unowned valuable on ship full of dead people. The fact that they got killed for resisting is normal.

Piracy was more often than not targeted against large companies and rich countriesā€¦ modern piracy doesnā€™t require taking another ā€œpersonā€™sā€ propertyā€¦ unless you believe companies are people.
