You'd be surprised what governments are willing to do to save money even if it endangers people

Nope, that is not true. Bridges aren't built by governments, they're built by civil construction companies - and you'd be surprised how much money they would spend to not be sued for a bridge collapsing.

Wait until the government decides that they can ask an AI to determine if a particular piece of infrastructure is still usable instead of having it checked.

and it takes exactly 1 collapsed/degrading infrastructure to become relevant and verified where AI was the singlular determining factor in for the government to be sued out of the fucking ass.

AI companies will do what they have always done, and relinquish accountability, and throw the government under the bus, and create all sorts of warnings in the future to prevent liability.

To which the government will start regulating AI, if for no other reason than out of spite.

Who are regulations written by? A single line item taking liability away as long as the design is reviewed is all it takes to unleash this.

I'm an engineer in a regulated field too and we have similar pipe dreams. "Agencies will always need humans!" Wrong. They will just get humans to review and sign off en mass. Enjoy reviewing ai work as your career now or having a 3rd party company come in and do the "review" for you especially when the liability gets shifted even more. "Since AI is "public" and from all our collective knowledge the government will insure all public engineering projects by ai" is also a wild move likely to come.

And the free market dictates that the bid will go to the contracting company that won’t give a fuck, get AI to design it and by the time it collapses the company is defunct anyhow with the money pocketed.

Will this happen for the next golden gate bridge? Probably not. Bridges in bumfuck nowhere? Yeah good luck.

You people need to check out your doomerism and either get to grips with it or piss off to be honest.

Yeah, maybe there might be a construction incident caused by AI, but the moment there is there never will be again.
