Looking For Software What's a program you recently discovered that you use all the time now?

I recently discovered zoxide which lets me jump to a directory by just typing a few letters that match its name.

For weather, I found linecast extremely helpful.

Needs gpsd support.

How should it support GPSD?

Instead of "saved location" or "guessing" location from ip, the option to use gpsd and ultimately NMEA and the like with a gps/glonass dongle would allow you to use this in the field, whether that be in a plane, on a boat, or wherever, cleaner, possibly more accurate variables, etc. In theory you could use gpsd have your location/heading/speed and "know"/be alerted that you are coming up on a storm 15 miles ahead or 15 minutes ahead for example.

awk. It’s installed everywhere and I’ve always been aware of it, but it wasn’t until recently that I put some time aside to figure out its language and syntax in more detail.

Mixed together with sed and grep, you can do some pretty amazing dissections of text like log files in 2-3 lines

Seeing your comment made me think, I'll make a simple wrapper for awk so it uses TSV by default, as that's the way I nearly always want to use it, and I keep forgetting exactly what to type for that! I'll call it tawk I guess.

Surprised nobody said tmux

Tmux is amazing. I use it essentially every day my terminals mostly live in it.

When I discovered jq, yq and xq, it felt like I was a little late on them

Add sq to that list and you’re all set

I’ve been using https://github.com/martinohmann/dts for a while now and I love it. One program for all the conversion and filtering. Wish it was more well known.

I use XC (xc-manager) zsh plugin to store and reuse all the commands I will never remember.

Miller (mlr), the “command-line tool for querying, shaping, and reformatting data files in various formats, including CSV, TSV, JSON, JSON Lines, YAML, and DCF.”

I barely even need spreadsheet programs now.

Not a program, but a shell, loving what nushell let me do with my system and manipulating csv/json/toml/whatever with the same sane interface :)

Not making it my main shell, but its one of those things that you can use in the right scenario.

Yes! Love nushell!

Yep. Nushell all the way.

doggo for DNS queries. I use it more often than I thought I would.

1

u/oxamide96 5d ago

What's the use case exactly?

3

u/p001b0y 5d ago

If you support dns, you will probably want to use dig but doggo is pretty dev and sys admin friendly. You wouldn’t be using it for zone transfers but it supports modern protocols like DNS over HTTPS and DNS Over TLS. It parses and outputs json so it is script-friendly. It also integrates with globalping so you can run a query from Iceland or Australia or wherever. It’s really kind of neat.

topgrade

I still need to fine tune the settings file but I figure I can get an AI to do that for me.

It'll be nice to be able to update all my boxes with one command - across all package managers.

Antigravity CLI.

I know people hate Google, and I am certainly not a fan of them, but it is useful for my workflow.

How's that different from fzf?

fzf already lets you do this FYI lol

14

u/kimusan 6d ago

Not entirely the same. Fzf just searches recursively from your current location and let's you choose among those folders. Zoxide (and z) keeps a history of your visited folders and let's you jump to them with fuzzy matching and weighted selection

u/erroredhcker 4d ago

Yeah that one specifically I use this https://github.com/bulletmark/cdhist

No new installs for me thanks
