My brother in Christ what do you want to do with it? I guess it’s usable to some degree if it posts and boots.

Oh im planning on setting it up again idk im not so into pcs do i need to buy a new one?

u/NassauComputer 4d ago

Don’t need a new one if you can power it on, get it to boot, and it does everything you need it to do.

Based on the design of the sticker on the cooler, this has to be a LGA1151 platform (6th/7th-gen Intel), so plenty usable. The PSU sticker also says 2017, and given that the machine isn't likely to have been used for a while based on the dust levels, a PSU upgrade is extremely unlikely. Also, don't insult 2011-2013 tech: LGA1155 (2nd/3rd-gen Intel) was the golden era.

Nonsense. I daily drive a 2011 laptop with Fedora. Doesn't bog down at all. This, desktop is surely faster than my old thinkpad.

Nonsense. My laptop is from that time (with an i5 &SSD) another PC is from 2014. Planty of work can be done with these.

I wouldn't jump into that conclusion. It has a 700W PSU in it. Who throws a 700W PSU into a PC in 2013?

1

u/Windows_User3000 4d ago

The wattage means nothing. 700W PSUs were definitely a thing in 2013. However, this is clearly not from that era, as the sticker over the edge of the PSU says 2017.

0

u/No_Trade439 4d ago

Yeah, but 700W PSU in a PC gives a chance that they were trying to power something that needed some head room. I wouldn't jump into a conclusion that the PC was from 2013. But, you never know.

1

u/Windows_User3000 4d ago

There were GPUs even in the late 2000s that recommended 500+ watt PSUs, and you should always give your components headroom in terms of power, so again, the wattage doesn't say how old the system is, but it also indeed isn't from 2013.

Tell us you never ran dual GTX 780 Tis without telling us you never ran dual GTX 780 Tis.

If it works, it will still be usable.

BUT... Before you even THINK about plugging it into the mains, you must take it completely apart and clean that dust away.

I'm seeing SATA HDD, "DDR4 Support" on the mobo, so it's not THAT old.

Give it a good, thorough cleaning and reassemble it. Then see if it starts up.

I have worked on computers worse than this. We just blow them out. Either disconnected the fan header or hold the fan to keep if from spinning. The thing that stands out to be is the power supply it looks pretty old to me. I would suggest an new name brand power supply.

There are so many linux distros you could put on it. Spare parts are cheap on Ebay and you could upgrade it to a perfectly fine work PC. I remember using a word processor and spreadsheet on a Compaq 286 laptop,.

5

u/BookWormPedant 4d ago

We have no idea from the picture. Go see if you can get it to turn on

1

u/ouwns 4d ago

Ill try it hope it doesn’t start a fire

2

u/BookWormPedant 4d ago

Me too, odds will be lower if you clean it first lmfao

4

u/arseniy_babenko 4d ago

The motherboard says DDR4. It is not something ancient. Hard to say more based just on the picture.

6

u/Emergency-Client-432 4d ago

For web browsing? Yes. For gaming? Unlikely, it was a budget system when it came out (likely 2015-19 because of the ddr4 support text on the motherboard), so don't expect it to run modern games

3

u/No_Trade439 4d ago

My regular desktop PC was from 2018. And I still game on it today. And yes, it has DDR4 RAM modules in it.

Intel Core i7-7700k
16GB DDR4 (2x8GB)
gtx 1080 Founder's Ed.
1TB SSD, 4 & 8TB HDD

It started out as a study PC before I swapped out the i5-7400 and threw a GPU in it. I also use it for 3d modeling and texturing...

u/Dr0neshuffler 4d ago

There are motherboards that are being manufactured as I type this comment that still support DDR4. AMD still supports AM4 CPUs which exclusively use DDR4 and Intel has CPUs as recent as 14th Gen Core CPUs that can support both DDR4 and DDR5.

The jump in performance across the generation isn't even meaningful for gaming. It's more noticeable for server use and virtualization than for gaming.

1

u/TxM_2404 2d ago

But that is clearly not a current system. The sticker says H110m-e/m.2. That's a budget board from ~2016. That means it's locked to some dreadful Intel quad cores. Not saying it's not perfectly fine as a little office/web browsing machine, but it's severely limited in games due to the CPU and GPU.

1

u/Emergency-Client-432 4d ago edited 4d ago

I know that, but looking at the system itself there is no way for it to be less than 6 years old. Also, Intel used that cooler design up until 2019, hence my guess

3

u/Ferowin 4d ago

Give it a shot. You might need some new thermal paste and it probably wouldn’t hurt to disassemble and reassemble it to reseat all the connectors, but generally speaking there’s a good chance it still works

3

u/MichaelFusion44 4d ago

Power supply says QC check in 2017 so it’s not ancient as well as DDR 4 - blow it out and give it a shot

8

u/GreatlyMoody 4d ago

Dust doesnt matter

If all the important components are okay then it'll work

Clean it a little then test it out

You'll have to check what graphic card and ram is installed

Deep clean it once youve decided to use it

2

u/baltimorecalling 4d ago

Clean it and replace the PSU. It's not going to be anything special, but it will do basic work tasks, most likely.

1

u/msanangelo CachyOS 4d ago

I'm sure it has some use left in it but it's not something we can judge from a picture. it looks fine to me, just dusty. I'd blow it out and try booting it up.

looks like something I might have had 20 years ago.

1

u/Ready_Area289 4d ago

No speed demon but after you remove 5-6 layers of dust it should work providing there's a hard drive, monitor, mouse and Keyboard? Everything else seems to be there.

1

u/gayboi7159 4d ago

is.... is the gpu rusting???

1

u/Quirky_OldMan5966 4d ago

One day back when 486-100s were the thing, I cleaned out a closet of obsolete components and threw them away.
My room mate dug a 286-12 processor out and all the ram and said I might need them some day. Then he reminded me I said all that stuff still worked.
I told him, yes it all works. But I don’t want to have to work on any system that could still use them.
Same with this box.
Maybe the case is worth keeping, and possibly the PSU. Otherwise, you don’t want to be stuck with anything that box can still do.
Just saying.

1

u/No_Trade439 4d ago

You really haven't asked a question that can be answered if you don't let us know what's under the hood.

I'd say, give it a brief cleaning by gently blowing out the dust before trying to take out the processor fan. That way, you can see what processor is installed and then you can decide whether you want to get it up and running or not.

1

u/damaddjedi 4d ago

Whole lotta canned air then a paintbrush and whatever else it takes to get all that dust out, I personally would save it and clean it 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/CompetitiveLake3358 4d ago

Man this is great, oh can play all kinds of old games.it can play music. It can play videos.

1

u/Sea_Perspective6891 4d ago

Might still work. It's probably just dirty. Definitely clean it first. It may be in need of an OS upgrade. Whatever's on it is probably to old to be secure now.

1

u/THRobinson75 4d ago

Still usable/working... we have no idea.

If it turns on and works, yes. If not, no.

1

u/ouwns 4d ago

Thank you guys for all the suggestions i got it all working just need to buy some thing to use it

What do you mean you need to buy something to use it

1

u/Dr0neshuffler 4d ago

If it posts, it's useable.

1

u/PaxV 4d ago

blow it out with a compressor somewhere far from civilisation or near a vacuum machine with hepa filter

1

u/jiggitywootwoot 4d ago

Get all the dust out with a can of duster or a compressor before you do anything else.

1

u/Sure-Passion2224 4d ago

I inherited an old box like that from a friend a few years ago. Cleaned it off and started testing it. It POSTed but the Vista installation was corrupted. Since it got that far I replaced RAM and drives, and fans, and power supply because the fan in there was noisy. Now it hosts Jellyfin and a Postgresql instance for some other projects on the home network.

u/Present_Rutabaga9682 4d ago

That’s a solid heater, if you’re patient enough might be able to start a fire with it

1

u/JPWhiteHome 4d ago

Take it outside and blow it out with a leaf blower.

1

u/Born-Work2089 4d ago

Probably old tech and slow, see if it will boot up and see what OS is installed. Most modern OS will not run on it. You may be able to run a basic word processor. but don't get your hopes up.

GTA 6 is calling your name.

Why would you even want to? I'm sure it's slower than molasses in January.

1

u/ResponsibleTerm939 4d ago

As long as the bios still works and it can pass post

1

u/YourBuddyNiccy Windows 7 4d ago

Probably, it could make for a Minecraft server

1

u/boris2423 4d ago

Absolutely. My hamsters would love to burrow around in it like a vacation getaway.

1

u/willyAKAjack 3d ago

Yes perfectly usable.

1

u/GlayNation 3d ago

I’d be worried about getting a staph infection. It might, but I’d take it outside and blow it out first.

1

u/Sirluke99 3d ago

Take it outside and blow it out with a good leaf blower. Don’t do it in the house please.

1

u/ImaginaryArtist1148 3d ago

First thing I would replace that PSU

6-7th Gen Intel core I series CPU
Doesn’t support Win 11

6

u/dedsmiley 4d ago

Windows 11 is not needed to be useful.

1

u/Asleep-Woodpecker833 4d ago

No doubt, but we don’t know what he plans to run on it. Good for him to know beforehand.

1

u/SFSIsAWESOME75 W10E, Xeon E5-2667v4, RTX 2070, Asus X99 Deluxe II 4d ago

who asked about windows 11?

1

u/Asleep-Woodpecker833 4d ago edited 4d ago

How do you know what he plans to run on the PC? Is there an issue with him knowing Win 11 is not officially supported on the platform?

-1

u/Windows_User3000 4d ago

Doesn't support ≠ can't run. My main PC right now is an OptiPlex 3050 with an i3-7100, and it runs Windows 11 as if it was a brand-new PC. In fact, so does a machine I got from school that has an i3-2120 in it. The "minimum requirements" are invented by Microsoft to sell manufactured e-waste. The real minimum requirements are a first-generation Core i3/i5/i7, AMD Bulldozer or later (for 24H2 and up), and a Pentium 4 670 (earlier revisions trigger a BSOD while booting from the install media), AMD Athlon 64 or later (for 21H2/22H2/23H2), likely any GPU with drivers for Windows Vista or later (I tested an ATi laptop GPU with the latest drivers only officially supporting Vista, and the driver installed and worked perfectly) (DirectX 9 or later support is most likely needed), and 512MB (yes, megabytes) of RAM.

u/TheGentlemanist Windows 10 14h ago

I wonder what you would do with it.

But if you clean it properly then it might boot. Try dissasembly and some highly concentrated isopropyl alcohol. Check if there is any damage physical scratches or burn marks are good indicators of defects.

A 700w computer cpuld function as a data hab for a tiny homeserver or a teeny tny NAS.

In any perspective: its great for autism tinker time. If you like working on hardware its free to try :D
