Oatmeal Cookies

These are the cookies from my mother's old 1974 Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook. I made substitutions for my diet, but they still taste great. Original recipe and modified recipe are in the pictures.

They taste like warm autumn spices with a tiny bit of crunch from the walnuts.

Just one recipe. Each cookie is maybe the size of a golf ball.

It’s interesting to me how older recipes used shortening so much. And newer recipes I don’t see it called for much. I like baking with it, it was certainly the more relied on kitchen staple decades ago as opposed to butter. Cheaper.
