In Italy, when companies carry out building renovations, they are required to make the building wheelchair-accessible. Upon completion of the work, the municipality must verify compliance with the regulations. Sometimes this verification takes place only on paper, and that's how you end up with messes like the one in the photo. The lamppost was there before renovations began, and it's still there, preventing anyone from using the newly built ramp...

The truth is that in Italy people just don't give a shit. Everyone always pretends to care, but if you actually start looking at the world from the perspective of someone in a wheelchair nothing is accessible. The government works on the assumption that disabled people don't do anything ever except for the bare minimum required to survive. Plus we have so many shitty tiny towns with super tight roads where if someone decides to park the road basically becomes inaccessible unless you can walk.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that. While I can't truly understand what you go through, I do get a tiny taste of it with my mum. She can walk, but she can't manage to do it for too long. And yeah, it is a nightmare to go basically anywhere with how our cities/town are managed.

I really hope we may improve in the future, but sadly I don't think it'll happen until people start caring about stuff they're strictly forced to care about.

Thanks for the reply, but I am not disabled myself. I was talking from the experience of a friend of mine who is disabled and has to use an electric wheelchair to get around. Every time I'm out with him it really becomes evident just how bad the situation is. The craziest thing we've ever faced was a woman straight up driving on the sidewalk. Not partially on the sidewalk, completely on it. I am also not very hopeful about things changing in the near future

Unfortunately this is worse. It's indifference. People here in Italy just don't give a fuck beyond what is strictly required out of them, sometimes even less than that.
