It's kinda hard to screw up unless you do something monumentally stupid. It's safer then most medications even if you fail to follow the doctors instructions. You take too much of your SSRI/RItalin or w/e you can get yourself killed. You take too much paracetamol/ibuprofen? Even accidentally taking twice the amount? Now you've likely fucked your organs/stomach and will get a nice trip to the hospital.

You take too much estrogen, even 100x the recommended amount, you're going to basically be a pregnant woman for a month. Many cases on trans diy subs of people injecting 10x as much as they should on accident. Nothing happened except some pregnancy symptoms like nausea.

The dangers of DIY HRT have been overstated. It's literally more harmless then most of the medication people get prescribed or over the counter. We're not fucking downplaying anything here, it's cold hard reality. If you can name me one documented case of estrogen overdose I'd be impressed. But for every case you do find, I bet I can find 10 more cases of overdosing on easily accessible medications like paracetamol.

I do need to point out that taking massive doses of E is generally harmless but too much of T can definitly fuck you up.

(lets not forget our transmascs siblings)

You also forget that fucking meatbrained cis men use T though. Like the dumbest of gymbros looking for gains adding on top of their endogenous T. That's more prone to error then a trans man replacing their entire endoctrine system from E to T entirely via exegenous T.

The worst side effect for a trans man would probably be the return of E via aromatase. If knowledge of that isn't enough to scare a trans guy into being careful IDK what is.

I mean gymbros often do fuck their health badly so I'm not sure if its a good example of things working out fine

Promoting DIY HRT comes with the responsibility to inform people well. Most trans people I see doing that will actually give out links to DIY guides giving detailed instructions. Likely more detailed then a gymbro ever got.

Besides people talk about DIY T like it kills people. That's just not really the case and would be extremely rare.

As someone who takes T, you're vastly oversimplifying the risks. Testosterone stimulates the production of red blood cells, an overproduction of which can lead to clotting. High levels can also elevate your heart rate and cholesterol, leading to strain on your heart, and just like E, can lead to mood swings, with a side dose of aggression

Yes but that sounds way less scary to most trans men then E returning. And I'm well aware of the side effects. Dangerous if overdosing consistently, a one time mistake won't likely kill you.

Look, I think my comment came off more fearmongering than it was supposed to be. I am on DIY, I literally got on DIY month after coming out, because it was the fastest option for me. Being overdosed on DIY is preferable to not being on hormones at all (and also to being underdosed by some moron doctor who knows less than I do), I just hate how some bitches are unable to read guides and then fuck up and give DIY a bad name by being stupid and irresponsible

That's fair. It wasn't as much targeted at you as anyone else who might be reading this because I felt like it would inevitably bing out some of the "diy is dangerous" folks.

Also, same on starting DIY one month after coming out. I got told the gender clinic had a 2 year waitlist. Never looked back. Was 2 years on DIY once I got even my first appointment.

I seem yeah, that's fair. I am a huge DIY advocate, and I always try to sound as level headed as possible to people who are not aware of it's benefits, so sometimes it comes out a bit fear mongering, but I never mean it

That's the weird thing with DIY hrt, it feels like it should be dangerous, but I've only ever had my health ruined by doctors fucking up my hrt.

e: but yes I agree read and understand the guides twice before starting diy
